ueda annual summit 2014 - awards of excellence - research and analysis - pacific region breadfruit...
DESCRIPTION
The Pacific Business Center Program UH partnered with the National Tropical Botanical Garden Breadfruit Institute, to promote and expand breadfruit use in the Pacific as a local natural resource for food security, health, disaster preparedness, and a regional wide breadfruit gluten free flour and breadfruit by-products industry for community based economic development and greater self sufficiency through local capacity development. The US market demand for gluten free products in 2013 exceeded 10 Billion with projects of 15.5 Billion for 2016. The breadfruit industry development focus’s on research/analysis and product development of the tree’s multi natural resource capacity that includes gluten free flour from its fruit, organic latex from its sap, organic insecticide from its flower and marine worm, termite resistant wood from the tree structure itself. To create an economic incentive for the State of Hawaii and Pacific Island Countries to grow breadfruit trees, the PBCP organized the first ever Breadfruit Summit in American Samoa. Supported by Ulu Pono, PBCP brought together experts from Hawaii and the US, to introduce new research and technology developed by the National Tropical Botanical Garden Breadfruit Institute. In 2013, the PBCP introduced breadfruit plantlet technology at the 19th Micronesia Chief Executives Summit (MCES). Led by Governor Inos of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, MCES endorsed the PBCP’s proposal for a feasibility study for creating a breadfruit flour industry in Micronesia. In September 2014, the initiative was extended to Fiji as the central point for the Melanesian Islands through Koko Siga Pacific of Fiji, the University of the South Pacific, SPC Regional Gene Bank Center for Pacific Crops and Trees, and the US Embassy in Fiji. A Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs grant, enabled agreements to be initiated with Kansas State University International Grains Program Department of Grain Science and Industry, UH College of Tropical Agriculture Food Science program and Robinson Fresh of CH Robinson a national and global supply chain food distributor. Other partners of the Breadfruit Team include the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC), NOAA Pacific Office Desk, UH School of Urban and Regional Development (DURP), Olohana and Agroforestry.Net whom continue to be significant partners in advancing the initiative throughout the region, US Mainland and beyond.TRANSCRIPT
