Bluntly, human beings have yet to use solarpower on a massive scale. Instead, they turn to mineralfuel, which costs heavily.

In fact, the sun is a burning star with hydro-gen. With average surface temperature of about 6000K, the sun is like a plant producing power that ismillions of times the total power produced by nuclearreactors in many countries around the world.

When they touch solar photo voltaic-PV,protons in the sun’s rays produce electricity, which isdirect current (DC). Therefore, solar chips are indemand in the world to produce solar power. Today, consumers around the worldcome to choose not only quality but also safefoods. The role of the meat and fish sector isbecoming more important in the nation’sfood security. Pedigree species of farm animalsare being produced with advanced methodsin the livestock and fisheries area.

Species of freshwater fish in demandinternationally are bred on a wider scale. In2009-2010 alone, the nation exported over90,000 tons of carp.

Total acreage of freshwater andsaltwater fish and prawn farms across thenation stands at more than 200,000, indicatinga seventy fold increase within a period of twodecades. Soft crab, a highly marketableaquatic animal, is farmed increasingly.

This year’s exportation of freshwaterand saltwater prawn, crab, eel and seaweedincreases by 61 percent, if compared with lastyear. Underwater soft crab breeding farmsin Taninthayi Region, Yangon Region,Ayeyawady Region and Rakhine State haveincreased to over 4000 acres.

In Taninthayi Region, over 300 acreshave been put under seaweed, which getshigh price in the international market. Thenation exported over 300,000 metric tons ofseaweed last year.

Mostly, Myanmar’s marine productsgo to her trade partners and EU countries. The nation is boosting production offreshwater and saltwater fish and prawnand crab. Myanmar’s marine products willbecome increasingly saleable in theinternational market if they meet standardsand are safe for human consumption.

LOMBOK ISLAND (Indonesia), 17 Jan—Foreign min-isters of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations haveagreed to call on the United States and the EuropeanUnion to lift or ease the economic sanctions on Myanmar.

An unofficial 2-day ASEAN foreign ministerial meet-ing is discussing the schedule and the main agenda forthe official meetings to be held this year.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawaspoke to reporters after the first day on Sunday.

He said the foreign ministers had agreed to call onthe United States and the EU to lift or ease the eco-

nomic sanctions on the country, such as the ban on im-ports of Myanmar products and restrictions on invest-ment.

The agreement came after Myanmar held a gen-eral election last November, and ended the house arrestof Aung San Suu Kyi.

It is believed that ASEAN countries want to boostthe region’s economy by stressing that Myanmar is mak-ing progress towards democratization and by persuad-ing the United States and the EU to take a softer stanceon the country.—NHK

NASA unveils extraordinary ideas forthe aircraft of 2025

WASHINGTON, 17 Jan—They are thesort of striking images that wouldn’t lookout of place in a scene from a sci-fimovie.

However, one of these could soonbe the face of modern aviation with theunveiling of a new generation ofpassenger aircraft.

NASA has revealed three conceptdesigns for quiet, energy efficient aircraftthat potentially could be ready for flight assoon as 2025.

Three companies - Lockheed Martin,Northrop Grumman and The BoeingCompany - came up with the designs and,at the end of last year, all three won acontract from NASA to research, developand test their concepts in 2011, meaningthese futuristic ideas could have thepotential to take flight.

and cleaner aircraft.—INTERNET

The designs came about after NASArevealed it was aiming to develop a line of‘super planes’ that are faster, larger, quieter - and burn fuel more efficientlyand cleanly than their present counterparts.

Criteria set by NASA meant thateach design had to fly up to 85 per centof the speed of sound, cover a range ofabout 7,000 miles and carry between50,000 and 100,000 of payload; eithercargo or passengers.—Internet

Robots design, build stuff;singularity must be near

PHILADELPHIA, 17 Jan—Do you ever get the feeling thatwe humans are quickly becoming obsolete? After all robotscan decorate cakes, play the piano, and even design and buildother robots. The next sign of our obsolescence comes fromthe University of Pennsylvania, where researchers haveprogrammed quadrotor drone bots that can design andconstruct buildings.

That’s right—the robots plan out the buildings. All thehumans are good for, according to Daniel Mellinger of theUPenn GRASP Lab, is to tell the robots what to make—thebots take it from there.

Granted, I don’t think flying bots will be building our citiesanytime in the near future, but it isn’t hard to imagine a futurewhere flying robots have a role in construction.

By the way, I dare you to not feel slightly unnerved by thebuzzing of the quadrotors’ engines—it makes them sound likea swarm of bees.—Internet

No-glasses 3D tech makes youblink really fast

NEW YORK, 17 Jan—No-glasses 3D isn’t really new, butit has plenty of limitations, like the fact that you either have tobe within a certain viewing angle to see it, or it may not beentirely safe for kids. If only there was a way to get glasses-free 3D without forcing you to wear glasses.

Enter this video, created by Jonathan Post, which showsan, um, entirely new way to do 3D without glasses. I’m notentirely sure how it actually works—or if it’s even real—butthis device causes your eyelids to blink very fast therefore doingthe job of 3D shutter glasses.

After all, what’s worse, looking silly wearing 3D glasses orlooking silly blinking your eyes really quickly? Apparently thisonly works with 120Hz screens, according to the YouTubevideo description. I’d love to know more about this device andhow it works—assuming that it actually exists—but I wonderwhat the side-effects would be. I’d imagine that after a 2-hourmovie that your eyes would feel pretty fatigued.—Internet

Authorities have embarked on a programme to fellthousands of trees in an effort to stop the spread of thedisease. The disease was named in the United Stateswhere it killed millions of oak trees in California.

It was unknown in the United Kingdom until it wasdetected in imported shrubs in a Sussex nursery in2002, the Observer said.

First showing up in British oak trees, the diseasehas jumped species and is now affecting commerciallyimportant Japanese and European larch trees as wellas several conifer species including Douglas fir, expertssay.—Internet

NEWCASTLE, 17 Jan—Wetter, cooler summers canhave a detrimental effect on the milk we drink, accordingto new research published by Newcastle University.

Researchers found milk collected during aparticularly poor UK summer and the following winterhad significantly higher saturated fat content and farless beneficial fatty acids than in a more ‘normal’ year.

But they also discovered that switching to organicmilk could help overcome these problems. Organicsupermarket milk showed higher levels of nutritionallybeneficial fatty acids compared with ‘ordinary’ milkregardless of the time of year or weather conditions.

The study, which is published in this month’s Journalof Dairy Science (January 2011), leads on from previousresearch undertaken nearly three years ago whichlooked at the difference between organic andconventional milk at its source — on the farms.

“We wanted to check if what we found on farmsalso applies to milk available in the shops,” said GillianButler, who led the study. —Internet

Scientists find inflammationimmune cell switch

Many patients withrheumatoid arthritis aretreated with a class ofdrugs known as tumornecrosis factor (TNF)inhibitors made by variousdrug firms includingAbbott Laboratories,Merck & Co, Pfizer andAmgen

But around 30 percentof patients don’t respondto anti-TNF drugs, soexperts say there is anurgent need to developmore widely effectivetreatment options.

In this study, scientistsfrom Imperial College inLondon found that aprotein called IRF5 actsas a molecular switch thatcontrols whether certainwhite blood cells, knownas macrophages, willpromote or inhibitinflammation.

In a report of theirfindings in the journalNature Immunology onSunday, they said theresults suggest thatblocking the production ofIRF5 in macrophagesmight be an effective wayof treating a wide range ofautoimmune diseases, suchas rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory boweldisease, lupus and multiplesclerosis.—Reuters

Flu deaths in Britain double last yearLONDON, 17 Jan— The number of deaths from swine flu in Britain

this winter has doubled and the National Health Service is in gridlock, medical officials said.

Dozens of hospitals across Britain have canceled non-emergencysurgery to care for the high number of flu patients, The SundayTelegraph reported.

This winter 110 people have died from swine flu, twice the numberfrom a year ago and scores of hospital wards were closed because ofnorovirus, a winter bug that causes nausea and vomiting.

Hospitals in Cambridge and Norfolk were on “black alert” for morethan two weeks, meaning they could not accept non-emergencypatients. In the past 10 days, major hospitals in London, Liverpool,Surrey, Southampton, Derby, Peterborough, King’s Lynn and GreatYarmouth issued the same warning.

One-watt solarpower lamps and two-wattsolar power lamps are pro-duced on a massive scale, each of which has a 4- or5-V battery and 30 LEDbulbs. If a solar panel isexposed to sunshine for 7hours, it produces electric-ity for about five hours, which is enough to givelight for a 10 square feetroom. A one-watt set in asolar lamp is sold for 5500kyats, and a two-watt set,for 10,000 kyats. It is very

beneficial to villagesthat have not got electricpower yet, rural healthcentres, trawlers, andnight shift workers.

Use of solarpower can also helpconserve theenvironment and saveState funds on electricpower. So, the peopleare urged to use solarpower in place of elec-tric power.

SINGAPORE, 17 Jan— Singapore’s fertility rateslumped to a new low in 2010, meaning the city-state must keep bringing in foreign workers tosupport economic growth as the population ages, asenior cabinet official said Monday.

The resident fertility rate — or number ofbabies born per woman per year — dipped to 1.16last year, down from the previous record low of1.22 in 2009, said Deputy Prime Minister WongKan Seng.

The rate is well below the 2.1 babies needed forthe population to replenish itself naturally.

“The key hurdle to achieving a sustainablepopulation lies in our weak local fertility rate,” saidWong, who also oversees a body that coordinatespopulation policies.

“For more than 30 years, we have not beenhaving enough babies to replace ourselves,”he said in a speech to a forum organised by theInstitute of Policy Studies.

While the government has pledged to putthe interests of Singaporeans first, the countryneeds to continue employing foreign workers,Wong Deputy Prime Minister Kan Seng said.

He said the government would continueencouraging couples to produce more children, but admitted that raising the fertility rate wouldtake time.

“For the foreseeable future, we will need to tapon immigration to augment our population, tosupport economic growth and to mitigate the impactof ageing,” he said.—Internet

Bosses at Washington’s cash-strapped public transportation service aremulling selling “naming rights” for Metro stations as a way of filling a budgetgap, a spokesman said Friday.

“We’re looking at a possible $72 million dollar shortfall in our budget forthe upcoming year, and so we’re looking for creative ways to try to close thatdeficit,” Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel said.

“One idea would be station naming rights,” where corporate entities buythe right to have their brand associated with one of Metro’s 86 stations.

Facebook and Twitter erupted with suggestions when the announcementwas made.

McDonald’s could sponsor McPherson Square near the White House, oneMetro rider suggested. It could become Big-MacPherson Square.

Wheaton, in the Maryland suburbs, could become Wii-Wheaton if it weresponsored by the popular interactive video game. Cream of Wheaton, a playon the name of a hot breakfast cereal, has also been suggested.
