UDIA is the peak membership organisation representing the urban development industry in Western Australia. The

Institute has been representing members for more than 40 years.

Steve is a Senior Planner with CLE with over 10 years of has widespread experience in statutory and strategic planning, having held a range of positions in local government and at the former East Perth Redevelopment Authority. Steve is committed to realising positive development outcomes for his Clients in a timely and efficient manner through his strong knowledge in preparing and implementing regional and local scheme amendments, structure plans, design guidelines and subdivision

applications. With qualifications and experience in mapping and survey in Australia and internationally, Steve has excellent project management and communication skills which have proved critical in the implementation of a number of large scale development projects.

Zanda Cameron, a Principal with RobertsDay, is one of Australia’s most preeminent place making strategists, with over 15 years of industry experience. Before moving to RobertsDay, she was a founding partner of Place Match, Western Australia’s first place making consultancy, and a senior manager at EPRA (now MRA). Zanda works to understand and leverage local aspirations and insights to achieve sustainable community outcomes within budget. She is an energetic facilitator with a proven ability to

translate analytical concepts to practical and tailored outcomes. Her ethos is to make sure the community is ‘all aboard’ so a project can successfully launch and be delivered on the ground. Because without stakeholder engagement, the best laid place-making strategies will come to nothing. She has extensive knowledge of community and economic development, planning, tourism, culture and the arts, property management and retail.

SUZANNE BROWN Manager Liveable Communities

WATER CORPORATION

Suzanne is a civil engineer with a Master’s degree in environmental science. She has 27 years’ experience in the water sector and was until recently the Water Corporation’s Environment and Aboriginal Affairs manager for seven years. Last year she took on the newly created role of Drainage and Liveable Communities manager. In this role she is delivering the Drainage for Liveability Program by negotiating with local authorities and land developers to collaborate on projects to enhance community value

around drainage infrastructure.

ANDREW CARVILLE Development Executive

RED DOOR PLANNING GROUP

Andrew has ten years’ experience in town planning and built form, with special interest in urban form and greyfield redevelopment. He is currently undertaking PhD research into infill housing models, and the role played by developers in revitalising failing suburbs. He was on the Special Technical Advisory Committee for the EMRC, exploring development potential along Rapid Transport Corridors as part of a joint study with Curtin University, and has recently had a chapter published about

Perth’s apartment experiences.

CHRIS CARMAN Managing Director

BENCHMARK PROJECTS AUSTRALASIA

Chris is the Managing Director of Benchmark Projects Australasia and has over 35 years’ experience in managing complex land development and major infrastructure projects in both the private and government sectors. His experience includes such major projects as the Joondalup City Centre and the Mandurah Ocean Marina, with the latter being a multi-award winning project that has become the model for similar developments around the world.

Chris has served as WA Chapter President and National Board Member for the Australian Institute of Project Management for several years and has been particularly active in the promotion of Project Management as a profession in its own right, with the ultimate aim of achieving Chartered status for Project Managers. Chris also sits on the Consultative Committee for the Project Management curriculum at Edith Cowan University.

GERRY GANNON Course Facilitator

Gerry Gannon has been a journalist, broadcaster, MC and media trainer in Australia for the last 30 years and is now one of the best known speakers and facilitators in Australia. After a decade with ABC radio in Western Australia, Gerry left to pursue a career that would bring him closer to audiences and allow him to explore parts of the world he couldn’t do from the inside of a radio studio. He established Indonesia’s first English language radio station in Bali, served on the council, and as President, of

the Royal Flying Doctor Service and on the board of the Tourism Council of WA.

A specialist conference MC, facilitator and media expert, Gerry is renowned for his wit, passion, easy-going nature and commitment to those he works with. He has worked extensively in both Australia and overseas and provides media skills training to government, not-for-profit organisations and industry entities, as well as conducting speech and presentation training courses.

BRENDAN FOLEY Associate

Brendan is an associate in Lavan’s Planning, Environment and Land Compensation team. Brendan has significant experience in all aspects of planning law, including advocacy, mediation and trial preparation. Brendan is regularly involved in providing strategic project advice, conducting due diligence investigations, and preparing submissions on behalf of clients. In addition to Brendan’s legal qualifications, Brendan is a qualified Town Planner, and worked for a private planning firm for a number of years

before joining Lavan.

JEREMY CORDINA General Manager - Land

Jeremy combines a sharp engineering mind with experience in land development, construction, design and project management. Currently the General Manager Land at Parcel Property, his 18 years’ experience in the property development industry is backed up with a degree in Civil Engineering, Property Finance and an MBA. Young, energetic and dynamic, Jeremy brings a strong construction and management focus to the UDIA Council. In 2009 Jeremy was awarded UDIA’s Young

Professional Scholarship which was the catalyst for the highly successful High School Advocacy Program which has reached over 1,400 students. Jeremy’s commitment to the UDIA can be evidenced through his active involvement as Chair of the Infrastructure Committee and various other strategic reference groups. Jeremy has also joined the ranks of industry presenters for the UDIA Professional Development Program. Jeremy was elected to the UDIA Council in 2011 and re-elected in 2013 and 2015.

JOHN HALLEEN Technical Director

RPS ENVIRONMENT & PLANNING PTY LTD

John is a Technical Director within the RPS Environment (Land and Infrastructure) team. He is responsible for project management, environmental assessment, reporting and advice on a range of land management and development projects throughout Western Australia.

Key areas of skill and experience include coordinating formal environmental impact assessments, co-coordinating detailed marine and terrestrial focused environmental investigations, project management, liaison and negotiating with State EPA and Office of the EPA and the Commonwealth Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities. Prior to this John held senior roles in the Department of Planning and Planning Ministers Office.

VIVIENNE EDWARDS Civil Project Engineer/ Principal

WOOD & GRIEVE ENGINEERS

Vivienne is a Civil Project Engineer and Principal at Wood & Grieve Engineers and is also Chair of the UDIA Outlook Committee. Vivienne’s responsibilities at Wood & Grieve Engineers include engineering design and documentation, project management, client liaison, feasibility studies, obtaining authority approvals and superintendence of land development projects. Vivienne is also involved in the recruitment and mentoring of young engineering staff.

ALEX MCGLUE Senior Associate

Alex is a senior associate in Lavan’s Planning, Environment and Land Compensation team. Alex acts for landowners and property developers in relation to all aspects of land use and development. Alex is regularly involved in high profile court and tribunal proceedings including High Court appeals, judicial review and appeal proceedings in the Supreme Court, review proceedings in the State Administrative Tribunal and planning prosecutions in the Magistrates Court. Alex also provides strategic and

commercially relevant advice on complex legal issues, assists clients in relation to development and subdivision applications and presents deputations on behalf of clients at JDAP meetings. Alex has been recognised by the Doyle’s Guide 2016 as being a national Rising Star in the discipline of planning and environmental law.

DR IAN MARTINUS Manager Advocacy & Economic Development

CITY OF WANNEROO

Dr. Martinus is an economic development and ICT project management specialist with extensive government and private sector experience in systems integration, ICT implementations, ICT investment management, trade and investment, e-government, as well as small business innovation and development. A strong focus of his work has been in the ICT systems integration as Sector Lead for new IT operating systems and data migration (data center) efforts.

ICT project management abilities include organising and managing hardware implementation teams and backend SI professionals working within tight timelines and budgets. Similar related work included synchronising tax file, employee ID and bank account details for the Ministry of Education (World Bank sponsored) working with key government and private sector stakeholders. High level work included presentations to senior officials in the State and Federal Australian government and to senior foreign government officials and private sector partners.

Dr. Martinus has the highest level of expertise in the co-ordination and execution of strategies particularly with respect to international business and is a current board member of Economic Development Australia (EDA) WA Chapter.

SHOHAN JOHNSON-KAIN Design Manager, Senior Landscape Architect, Reg. AILA

Shohan is the Design Manager; Senior Associate Landscape Architect practising with 14 years’ experience in Perth, Queensland, China and Hong Kong.

Since returning to Perth in 2010, her experience is predominately focused within large greenfield and strata developments with a key emphasis on front end client and project management. This involves being efficient and meticulous with all facets of

project works; starting at feasibility studies/due diligence works for land acquisitions, strategic landscape master planning, concept designs thought to construction ensuring delivery projects on time and within budget.

During her career she has worked on a diverse range of projects, including high end (international) resort design, golf courses, private estates and large Greenfield developments concentrating on design and delivery of Public Open Spaces (POS), streetscapes, town plazas and semi-public spaces.

GAVIN HEGNEY Property Analyst, Commentator & Licensed Valuer

Gavin Hegney is a Property Analyst, Commentator and Licenced Valuer at Gavin Hegney Property and also one of Australia’s most influential voices in property. For over 30 years, Gavin has been a prominent member of WA’s property industry. His insightful understanding of the market has seen him become a regular media commentator both state and nationally, in providing his independent view on property and forecasting future market trends. Gavin pioneered the establishment of WA’s

first property buying agency and his visionary talent has contributed to the continued evolvement of the company. Gavin co-authored the book ‘The Residential Property Market’ and he enjoys investing his time undertaking research of the property, finance and share markets in understanding how they fit together. He is the resident property expert on ABC talkback radio and forms part of the ABC’s ‘Money Men’ team and shares his unique property expertise as guest presenter to corporate groups and industry events. Gavin was honoured as a state finalist in the prestigious ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award for 2013.

John has headed up the Development Services business unit of the Water Corporation’s Assets Planning Group since 2015 and prior to that in a 42 year career with the Water Corporation has held roles in design, project management and stakeholder management. Over this time John’s focus has been on industry collaboration with a goal of delivering safe, reliable and cost effective servicing solutions that facilitate the development of our state. For many years John represented the Water

Corporation on UDIA’s Infrastructure Committee.

John’s commitment to facilitating mutually beneficial servicing outcomes can be witnesses by the time and energy dedicated to industry and key customer liaison that underpins his standard operating model.

DARREN PESICH Perth Civil Section Manager, Principal, Director

WOOD & GRIEVE ENGINEERS

In 2003, Darren became a Principal of Wood & Grieve Engineers and in November 2012 was elected as a Director. Currently, and since July 2013, Darren manages the Perth Civil Section which comprises approximately 30 staff.

His qualifications include Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (1st Class Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce (General Management).

Through his 20 years’ contribution to the industry, Darren has gained significant experience and expertise in detailed engineering design and superintendence of land development, civil engineering and building services projects.

STUART NAHAJSKI General Manager Regional

Stuart is responsible for LandCorp’s Regional Program of land and infrastructure developments, in addition to strategic planning, corporate management and policy determination. He leads a team of land and property development professionals who focus on working with stakeholders and communities to facilitate government priorities and to attract private investment across regional Western Australia. LandCorp’s regional priorities include supporting economic diversification and realising the

value of land and property through transformational and sustainable developments in the residential, industrial and commercial property sectors. With a degree in civil engineering and a Masters in Project Management, Stuart has held senior development, project management and engineering roles with Stockland, Urban Pacific and SKM, and has previously worked in both the private and public sectors in the United States.

BRIAN MCMURDO Special Counsel

Brian McMurdo is a special counsel in Lavan’s Planning, Environment and Land Compensation team. Brian focuses on planning, environment, land development, public infrastructure, land acquisition and land compensation having had more than 35 years’ experience in these areas. Brian has practised both within government and for the private sector. In his previous role as a Senior Assistant Crown Solicitor, Brian acted for the government in areas of land compensation, land acquisition, major

projects and public infrastructure and was involved in all aspects of planning and environmental processes. Brian provides a wealth of expertise in these areas, with clients in both the public and private sector. His practice involves strategic advice, negotiations, statutory approval processes and proceedings in all jurisdictions.

MARIE MILLS Managing Director & Course Facilitator

MILLS WILSON

Marie is Managing Director of Mills Wilson – a full-service communications agency to ASX-listed, government, private and not for profit organisations across Australia, with a particular focus on planning, transport, property and major infrastructure. Marie started her career as a travel writer, but gave away the ‘dream job’ to become a print and then broadcast journalist, including reporting and producing television news and current affairs, and two years hosting morning talkback radio with the ABC. Her

corporate training career started during that time and has expanded to include a broad range of training and corporate coaching for senior managers and executives. Marie is a Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of Australia and a Board member of Workpower – an organisation that creates opportunities for people with disability and people with mental illness, and supports families and carers.

BRUCE YOUNG Managing Director

Bruce is Managing Director of Spatial Property Group Pty Ltd, a specialist property developer, project management and real estate company that was formed in 2010. He previously worked at Peet Limited and currently sits on UDIA Council. He has chaired the UDIA Urban Water Committee and has been a strong advocate for the development industry in all things relating to affordability. Bruce holds degrees in Science and Town Planning.

Bruce has experience in many forms of development projects from feasibility and acquisition, through to planning, design, construction, marketing and sales.

CRAIG WALLACE Partner

Craig Wallace is a partner in Lavan’s Planning, Environment and Land Compensation team. Craig specialises in all aspects of town planning and environmental law as it pertains to property development and land use.

Craig has over 18 years’ experience in his specialism working in local government, central government, boutique regeneration firms and large multi disciplinary law practices in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Since being admitted, Craig has been involved in a wide range of matters for developer and government clients including providing advice on all aspects of developments and subdivision approvals, environmental approvals (both State and Federal), advice on strategic framework and policy documents, advocacy at all levels of the decision making process in a planning and environmental context and the conduct of statutory appeals in the State Administrative Tribunal/Supreme Court (planning matters) and the Office of the Appeals Convenor/Supreme Court (environmental matters). Craig has also had the conduct of environmental and planning due diligence for significant corporate transactions and has defended prosecutions in the Magistrates Court brought under both the Environmental Protection Act 1986 and the Planning and Development Act 2005.

the communities in which they operate.

Andrew spent six years as a WA Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway) board member and also chaired Healthway’s Sports Advisory Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) - and organisation that bestowed on him the inaugural Award of Honour for outstanding service and honoured him as a Fellow in 2012. Andrew is also a founder of the pro-revitalisation group Future Bayswater.

Dion has 18 years’ experience in 5 cities throughout Australia and New Zealand in the research, development, marketing and sale of property - including masterplanned communities, residential developments, shopping centres, commercial land, and new homes.
