Dear Readers,

thIt is an enormous privilege to present the 10 issue of UDGAM-the ofcial newsletter of GNIOT Group.

This semester was a showcase of spectrum of activity. We started this semester by welcoming the New Year – 2016. GNIOTians showed their mantle in all the spheres, be it academics, sports, cultural and social. We had a mega sports day event “Spardhaa”, where students got to demonstrate their sportsmanship. Then we had a two-day technical-cultural extravagant “Fusion – 2016”, in which we had a huge response from participants from NCR. The highlight of the fest was a power-packed performance by Alfhaaz. The students also initiated tree-plantation drive in the campus. Various seminars, workshops and industrial visits were also organized by various departments for their respective students.

The college carved its name in National arena by clinching prestigious awards. The college received ”Best Engineering College in Delhi-NCR 2016”, “Sustainability Award-Placement & Career Building Award”, “CSR Top Institute of India 2016”. The college also opened Center of Excellence with CISCO Network Academy and Microsoft Technologies.

The institute saw some prestigious placements in this current session. The Training & Placement Cell organized various in-campus and off-campus placement drives generating ample opportunities for our students. Mr. Ankit Singh of CSE got placed in Microsoft Corporation with a package of 7lakhs p.a. The nal year students of Department of Mechanical Engineering designed and fabricated Off-road Buggy which was in top 15 designs showcased in the competition conducted by GBU.

The Udgam was re-launched in the last semester after a gap of two years. And we are over-whelmed by the response the readers gave us. We wish that our association remains as strong and that we continue to receive your valuable suggestions for the coming times as well.

ESSENCE OF BEING AN ENGINEER…

In today’s world, innovation and development are the key tools of shaping our future. Things which were a fragment of our imagination are now a reality. Every day, every hour, every minute, every second, something new is being conceived and then fabricated. This is the era of engineers and is bound to stay for a long long time…

But who is an engineer? An engineer is a practitioner of engineering, concerned with applying scientic knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical, social and commercial problems. Then what is engineering? Wikipedia says “Engineering is the application of mathematics, empirical evidence and scientic, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, and processes.’’ But it forgot to mention that, engineering inculcates curiosity, open mindedness, reection, collaboration, resourcefulness, resilience, visualization, to name a few. Equipped with these the engineer forays in the new dimension of ingenuity.

So what makes an engineer? Is it the skill set with which one is born or can it be cultivated. Well we all have an engineer with in us. If the questions like how and why shout inside you then it means you are already an engineer. These are the questions which led to discoveries which previously went unnoticed. So how do we develop and sharpen these instincts? As a kid we all were curious and asked questions without the fear of being ridiculed, experimented without fear of failure, but as we grew up we lose that curiosity and courage. The rst step is to revive that kid in you who was full of courage and curiosity, who was ready to explore the unknowns, learn and apply the learnings. Let us take an example. In our school days we learnt red, green and blue lights combined together becomes white light but it took more than eight decades from discovery of LED Lights (1990) after LED effect was discovered (1907) while red and green LED indicators were being used since 1962. The simple reason why it took so much of time was no one ever thought LEDs can become source of white light as they forgot that simple principle of components of light.

The engineering institute plays a vital role in building the engineering attitude and aptitude in its engineers by providing the environment and facilities to inculcate innovative thinking. One such example in GNIOT is in Mechanical Department where they designed and fabricated off road buggy which came in top 15 in NCR region. Another example is of our students of Department of Electronics and Instrumentation who developed a working e-commerce website, indohart.com, selling different types of merchandise. To showcase your engineering talent various opportunities exists within the institute in form of major projects and outside it in form of NASA’s competition and Google science fair. As a true engineer grab these opportunities and show case your talent Don't just graduate in engineering, become one !

All the teachers and students paid homage by observing two minutes of silence and lighting the candles and every individual took a pledge that they will remain committed towards cleanliness. On this event Vice-Chairman and Director-MBA Institute, along with all the faculty members planted over 120 trees in the college campus.

The GNIOT MBA Institute celebrated Basant Panchmi at the campus. The celebrations started with Saraswati Pujan. The Director-MBA Institute, presided over the proceedings and made offerings to the Goddess along with the faculty members and students. th13 Feb, 2016 - Workshop on Python

The TechClub organized a workshop, which gave an introduction to Python, Linux Operating System and the concept of Object Oriented Programming in Python. The speakers Mr. Anuvrat Parashar and Mr. Akshay had an interactive session with the students. The workshop was concluded by Mr. Ashutosh and Mr. Rishabh in which they shared the description of Pydelhi Community which holds meetups to discuss projects or hold workshops on Python.

The GNIOT MBA Institute conducted a workshop on Image Building for the students of MBA, PGDM and MAM. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Vinita Kanotra, an experienced image consultant. The workshop focused on the importance of image making and how to project a powerful personal image. The brief discussion on as to how the image should be treated as an asset and how it should be planned, developed and maintained was done. Around 100 students of MBA and MAM participated in this workshop.

The TechClub in association with CSE and IT department organized a seminar on Big Data and Hadoop technologies. More than 120 students attended the seminar. In the seminar the trainer Mr. Anand Kumar gave the detailed knowledge about Big Data and Hadoop technology followed by a brief hands-on session on Big Data. The topics discussed in the seminar were: Big Data, Hadoop ecosystem and its features, Career path through Hadoop, Job role in Big Data industry and Requirement of Hadoop and how to process. Students actively participated and were interested in working on the technologies like this.

th18 Feb, 2016 - Guest lecture on Microwave Welding

The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted a guest lecture on Microwave Welding for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering third year students by a speaker of very high repute, Professor (Dr.) Pradeep Kumar, former Vice-Chancellor, DTU, Delhi and presently working in Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT, Roorkee. The session was initiated by the Director-Engg. Inst., addressing and motivating the students followed by a brief introduction of the subject and the speaker. It was a very productive lecture in which the students were made aware about a newly researched and novel technique of welding, Microwave Welding, which was an innovation and patent disclosure of the respected speaker Professor Dr. Pradeep Kumar. In the presentation students were introduced to the basics of this welding process, along with its experimental setup and working.

t hThe GNIOT MBA Institute celebrated 10 National Management Day. The occasion was lead by Director - MBA Institute and the Head of the Department - MBA Institute. All the management courses students- MBA, MAM, and PGDM actively participated in the celebration. The interactive session also included the realization of Swach Bharat. The session was indeed a "learn while fun" session thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

The GNIOT MBA Institute organized a workshop on “Financial Planning and Capital Market Awareness” under the banner of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for the students of MBA, PGDM and MAM. This was an investment education and awareness program. Dr. Mukul Jain was the resource person from SEBI. In this workshop, the concept of savings and investment was discussed. The workshop was very enlightening and interactive where the students actively participated by posing their queries.

rdThe GNIOT CARES organized a workshop on "Art Of Mind Control" which was conducted by Mr. Jitesh Kumar, from 3 March, th2016 to 9 March, 2016. In this workshop, the trainer helped the students to believe in the Supreme Power and motivated them to

move forward in the eld by knowing the art of mind control. The trainer guided that by doing yoga, we can control our mind and learn how to heal and harmonize the body, mind, spirit and negative emotions.

The Department of Electronics and Communication thEngineering conducted the 5 National Creative Aptitude Test

(NCAT-2016). It is a creative aptitude exam which is conducted at national level for all Graduates and Post Graduates candidates of all courses and branches. Approximately 250 students participated in this test.

The GNIOT TechClub had their investiture ceremony. The event marked the presence of Chief Club Patron, Shri B.L Gupta Ji, Club Patron, Dr. Rohit Garg, Club In-charge, Dr. Rajesh Pathak, all the HODs and TechClub members. Chief Coordinators’ posts were preceded by Mukul Gupta, Akansha Tripathi and Anshu Singh. Erstwhile chief coordinators Suyash Srivastava and Rajat Saini gave a very inspiring and memorable speech. th28 Mar, 2016 - "OFF ROAD BATTLE" conducted by SAE-GBU

The students of Department of Mechanical Engineering participated in the Off-road Battle organized by SAE-GBU. The competition was divided in three rounds: Virtual, Static and Dynamic. Virtual round was to show the designs and specications on skype. Out of 310 colleges, 81 were qualied for next round. Next round was Static round, which was technical inspection of the car and driver safety inspection. In which only 15 colleges were qualied and our team was one of them. The dynamic round was divided into: pull the bull, tug of war, showdown and 1.7 km Off-Road Battle.

The main objective of the workshop was to make the students aware of the latest trends of using Digital Marketing and its edge over traditional marketing. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Nitesh Kumar, Marketing Head, Mirorsoft Technology. He gave the detailed knowledge of the concept and also illustrated the benets of it.

The GNIOT TechClub organized a workshop to introduce the burning platform of the current era namely "GIT HUB". The GNIOT CARES organized their Investiture Ceremony. Dr. Savita Mohan, Director-MBA Institute was the Chief Guest for the ceremony. Director-MBA Institute along with Director-Engg. The GNIOT TechClub organized Projex – an exhibition of Major Projects of nal Year students of all branches. Allmost 30 teams comprising 200 members participated in the event. Few of the eco friendly projects like “Future green car”, “Solar tracking system”, “Solar vehicle”, etc. were the main attraction. Some future concepts like “Pedal wheel charger”, “Footstep electricity generation”, “Touchscreen control smart wheel chair”, “LPG Refrigerator”, “Pedal power hacksaw”, etc were also demonstrated. The best in computer applications section were “INDOHAAT.com”, “Home automation and security system”, “Ofine aptitude portal”, “Text summariser”, “Hotel ordering system”, etc. Participation certicates to all and medals to the winners were distributed by the Chairman.

Rukhsat 2K16, the farewell party for the nal year MBA students was organized by the juniors of MBA and MAM. To the surprise of the seniors, a guest performance by Neevo a Punjabi sensational singer and Kay Ess a Punjabi rapper mesmerized the audience by their performance. They performed their latest upcoming song Mutiyare along with their other songs. To grace the event, Honorable Vice Chairman Shri B. L. Gupta Ji Director-MBA Institute, Dr. Savita Mohan, and Director- Engineering Institute, Dr. Rohit Garg along with the H.O.D of Mechanical Engg. Deptt., Dr. Sudhir Kumar were also present.

The nal year students of Department of Mechanical Engineering built a car that runs with the help of solar energy. This is a zero emission vehicle with a load carrying capacity of 250-300 kg and runs with the help of a 900W motor. The time needed for the rst full charging is 10 hours and a run time of 4 to 5 hours is delivered at a running speed of 35 kilometers per hour.

GNIOT celebrated its annual sports meet, Spardhaa-16 with pomp and splendor, organized by GNIOT Sports Club. The meet was organized on such a large scale that it became the talk of the whole educational world. The glittering opening ceremony commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest – Mr. Parvinder Awana. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Hon’able Vice-Chairman, Shri B.L. Gupta Ji, Member-Management, Shri Bajranglal Gupta Ji, Shri Rawal Ji and Shri Gaurav Gupta Ji, along with the respected Chief Guest, Director-Engg. Inst., Director-MBA Institute, Faculty In-charge Sports Club, Mr. Yogesh Kumar, faculty members and students. The Chief Guest declared the sports meet open. The opening ceremony was marked by releasing of blue-yellow colored balloons. Also blue-colored caps were distributed among faculty and students to instill the sports spirit.

The students of all the branches marched past holding their respective department’s ag, in-sync with the beats of the brass band. The National Flag was hoisted by the Chief Guest and dignitaries present. The National Anthem was sung by all present on the eld. This was followed by a spellbinding fusion dance by the students.

The sports extravagance was carried out over two weekends. The qualifying rounds of relay race, high jump and shot-put were th th thheld on 13 February, 2016. Semi-nals of cricket, football, basketball and volleyball were held on 13 February and 14

thFebruary, 2016. Kho-kho match of faculty members was also organized on 14 February, 2016.

thOn 27 February, 2016 the nals of cricket, football, basketball and volleyball were held. The main attraction of the day was sprints, shot-put and discuss throw. To add to the energetic vibes a “tug-of-war” was organized. Later in the day, a grand prize distribution ceremony was held, where the winners were given medals by the honorable Chief Guest, Mr. Parvinder Awana.

The fest was inaugurated by Hon’ble Chairman Shri K.L.Gupta Ji & Hon’ble Vice Chairman Shri B.L. th thFUSION (17 - 18 Mar, 2016)th thFUSION 2016 was celebrated in a grand way by students of the GNIOT Group of Institutions, GR. NOIDA on 17 & 18 March

2016. The Cultural Club of the institute organized two-day, technical-cultural events such as Group Dance, Singing, Quiz, Drama, Bridge Building, App Development, Code Hunt, Circuit Design, Informal Events and many more, saw enthusiastic participation from GNIOT students along with the students of Delhi & NCR. TANUJ band group “FUSION ADICTION” mesmerized all with their performance. Star night with “ALFAAZ” made the event unforgettable.

The rst day saw a spectrum of activities ranging from technical events to cultural events to informal events. App Development, Bridge Building, Literary and Informal events like “Biggest Eater Jeetega”, “Treasure Hunt”, “Click-a-Sele”, etc., were simultaneously conducted in the campus. The day ended up with the smashing fashion show.

DAY - 1 CELEBRATIONS

Second day of the fest began with beautiful classical dance, followed by a series of competitions which included solo song, group dance, on stage play, nukkad-natak and drama. While these were ongoing in the pandal, quiz, singing, dance and informal events were simultaneously conducted at the different locations in the campus. The fest had teams from Delhi University, Gautam Budh University, Amity University, Sharda University, to name a few. The show concluded on a high note, as everybody danced & partied at the Star Night with “ALFAAZ”, which was held after the Battle of the Bands competition.

Our outgoing batch, 2012-16, got a heart-warming farewell from their juniors. The various departments organized the farewell of their respective batches. The juniors put up a spectacular show for their seniors. The highlight of the farewell was the short speeches given by the out-going batch.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a visit to Auto Expo Mart. VOLKSWAGEN invited the students to attend the presentation on electric car (E-Car), which elaborated on the basic advantages of an electric car such as and not limiting to no pollution, noise free drive, low driving cost and much more. After the presentation students explored and enjoyed rest of the halls displaying various new and upcoming vehicles, exciting concept cars and some well known vintage cars.

The Cultural Club organized a two day workshop on TILT ME (ACCELEROMETER BASED WRIST CONTROLLED ROBOTS). The workshop was conducted by eminent trainers from i3indya Technologies, who made the students, understand the concept and use of accelerometer sensor, microcontrollers and microcontroller programming in designing a gesture based robot. Dr. Rohit Garg, Director –Engg. Instt., shared his views on the future aspects and career building in the eld of robotics. Vice Chairman Shri B.L. Gupta Ji, , motivated all the participants and organizers by his presence and said that such workshops will enhance the practical knowledge of the students and certainly help the students in their placements. The workshop was attended by engineering students from different disciplines and was a grand success.

The TechClub in association with CSE, IT and ECE department organized a workshop on Hybrid Mobile Application Development conducted by IBM. A total of 210 students attended the workshop in which the trainers awarded the IBM merchandise like T-shirts and Pens to the students. The trainers gave the demo of hybrid mobile application development and they also conducted a general aptitude test for the students and students scoring above 75% marks were provided 4-6 weeks training by IBM on Mobile App.
