BACHELOR OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC (HONS) FOUNDATION IN MUSIC
UCSI Universitys Foundation in Music is specically tailoredand designed to prepare post-SPM students for UCSI
Universitys degrees in Classical and Contemporary Music. Thethree semesters foundation programme includes music corecourses as well as general electives for students to choosefrom. Successful completion of the foundation programme willsatisfy all entry requirements and allow for direct entry to themusic degree programme outlined here.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Foundation in MusicSPM/O-Levels 5 creditsUEC 4 credits
Other Year 11 Equivalent Average score of 60%Music RequirementsCandidates must pass the Institute of Music audition andplacement tests, as follows:
1. Performance Audition (any major instrument or voice) Classical stream: Three Classical pieces of contrasting styles Contemporary stream: Three pieces of contrasting styles
(including contemporary style)Note: String/Woodwind/Voice majors are required to bring along their own
piano accompanist or request for a faculty accompanist (accompanimentfee will be charged).CD accompaniment is allowed for contemporary majors.
Contemporary stream, major drums: Demonstration of
knowledge of common drum beats including 8-beat rock,16-beat rock, and hip-hop at various tempi
2. Practical Skills Test Sight-reading, open-score reading, playing from simple
gured bass, repeating a melody, a rhythmic phrase andchord progressions from memory and singing intervals
3. Theory Test Intervals, scales and key signatures, triads, roman numeral
analysis, time signatures, beaming into beats, rests, scaledegrees and Italian/German terms
English RequirementsA distinction (A+, A or A-) in English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or
MUET Band 5; or a score of 213 (computer-based) / 550 (written-based) /80 (internet-based) in TOEFL; or Band 5.5 in IELTS.In the event that English Language Requirements are not met, studentmay be required to undertake additional English courses(s) prior orconcurrently with undergraduate programme, based on the Universitysdecision.
Auditions are held in March, July and November

The Bachelor of Classical Music (Hons) programme is intendedfor those who wish to pursue classical music studies to anadvanced level and has the advantage of a very broad basedcurriculum without compromising the possibility of increasingthe specialisation in one or more areas. Performance andperformance-related studies are especially prominent but
other areas such as history, analysis and stylistic compositionare also included.
This blend of practical work and academic enquiry will producegraduates equipped with a raft of skills and knowledge that willbe of value to many employers and enable them to pursuecareers not only as performers and teachers, but also asadministrators and managers within the wider music industryand beyond.

minor scales, chromatic scales, arpeggios in all keys Three Classical pieces of contrasting styles Note: String/Woodwind/Voice majors are required to bring along their own
piano accompanist or request for a faculty a ccompanist(accompaniment fee will be charged)
2. Listening Test Identication of a range of musical elements such as tempi,
textures, dynamics, timbres, and rhythms by listening andresponding to brief, recorded musical extracts of bothClassical and Contemporary styles
3. Practical Skills Test Sight-reading, open-score reading, playing from simple
gured bass, repeating a melody, a rhythmic phrase andchord progressions from memory, and singing intervals
4. Theory Test Intervals, scales and key signatures, triads and inversions,
roman numeral analysis, time signatures, beaming intobeats, rests, scale degrees, diminished and seventh chords,open score, cadences, lead sheet symbols, and Italian/German/ French terms
English RequirementsA distinction (A+, A or A-) in English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or MUE T Band5; or a score of 213 (computer-based) / 550 (written-based) / 80 (internet-based) inTOEFL; or Band 5.5 in IELTS.
