Before registering a career-best 12 strikeouts in a loss at Cal State Fullerton in the NCAA Super Regionals (June 10), the left-hander fanned seven batters in a complete game two-hitter against Illinois-Chicago (June 2). Six days previous, Brooks hurled a complete game victory against eventual two-time NCAA champion Oregon State to help send UCLA into the postseason for the second straight season.

Ryan Babineau, Alden Carrithers and Tim Murphy captured All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolades. The 2007 squad secured the most All-Pac-10 team selections at UCLA since 2000 (also five players). Cohen earned Pac-10 Co-Newcomer of the Year honors, becoming the first Bruin to gain that award since Wes Whisler (2002).

Mr. ConsistentJunior Alden Carrithers led the Bruins with a .352 average in his first season in Westwood. The Bruins were 15-19 when their opponents scored first in the game. When leading after eight innings, UCLA recorded a 31-1 record and when ahead after six innings, the Bruins registered a 24-2 mark.

LooKinG aheaDWhen the Bruins assemble for their 2008 campaign, they will return 25 players from their 2007 roster. Likewise, seven starting position players (including designated hitter) return to Westwood next spring, including two of UCLA’s three weekend starters (Gavin Brooks, Tim Murphy). After the 2007 season, UCLA lost outfielder Will Penniall, first baseman Tim Stewart and pitcher Tyson Brummett to graduation. The left and middle of the Bruins’ infield remains intact with the return of third baseman Jermaine Curtis, shortstop Brandon Crawford and second baseman Alden Carrithers. Likewise, two-year veteran catcher Ryan Babineau returns as UCLA’s backstop.

biG LeaGuersNine former Bruins earned playing time on major league rosters in 2007. The most recent addition to the big league club was former Bruin standout Ben Francisco, who made his major league debut for the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, May 1. After returning to Buffalo (AAA), Francisco stayed with the major league club for over one month midway through the season. Former UCLA infielder Chase Utley earned the start at second base for the Na-tional League in the 2007 MLB All-Star Game.
