A Tribute to Dr. Charles Millican
When Dr. Charles Millican reflected on
the honors recently bestowed upon him – the naming of Millican Hall, the bronze statue, the John Young History Maker Award and the UCF Alumni Champion’s Award – he wondered aloud what he had done to deserve such accolades. He was completely taken aback by the responses, which came hard and fast – ―Charlie, you influenced me to return to school‖; ―What would this community have been without UCF?‖; ―You helped partner the univer-sity with the community‖; ―I wouldn’t have the job I’ve loved for so many years.‖ He was truly humbled and ap-preciative of the fact that his life’s work meant so much to so many people in so many different ways. When Frances died, I, Dell Shadgett, Roger Pynn, Doshie Wright and Nancy Marshall formed Charlie’s Angels. Our main purpose was to stay involved in Charlie’s life, keep him updated on what was happening at the university, deliver food – he had a particular fondness for Crisper’s Potato Soup and Chocolate Chunk Cookies – and to generally keep his spirits high. Truth be told, he did as much to keep our spirits high, asking not only about the university but inquir-ing as to the wellbeing of our own fami-lies.
When sadness creeps in at his loss, and it does frequently, I think back on the many wonderful discussions we had over the years – he could discuss subjects from world politics to the care and feed-ing of a mother cat and her kittens which had strayed into his garden - and count my blessings for his friendship, his wis-dom and his sense of humor. He was beloved by the people at the University of Central Florida and in the Orlando community. Charlie Millican’s loss will be felt for many years but he would not want us to mourn but rather celebrate a life well lived. I don’t think any of us will ever hear ―When the Saints Go Marching In‖ without thinking of Charlie and smil-ing. Charlie Millican was a father figure to the
University of Central Florida. He was
also an important father figure to Jeff
and Gina Grasty and a wonderful grand-
father to their children, Madison, Haley
and William. At a recent dinner table
conversation, young William com-
mented, ―I know what Grandpa Charlie
is doing right now – he’s busy on his star,
founding the University of Central
Heaven.‖

Welcome to the ninth e-issue of T&G News, informa-
tion for the members of UCF’s Town & Gown Coun-
cil, the university’s premier friend-raising organization.
Dear Friends,
Happy spring everyone! As I type this message today, our temperature is in the mid 80s. What a nice re-minder, as snowflakes fall elsewhere in the country, of why we live in Central Florida. Another reason we are fortunate to reside in this community is, of course, the reason you are reading this newsletter from Town and Gown Council – UCF! There are far too many hap-penings at the university to mention in this newsletter however, if you were fortunate enough to attend our
first luncheon of 2011 you got a glimpse into the excit-ing world of the Communication Disorders Clinic at UCF. Dr. Janet Whiteside gave a most informative and interesting presentation on the many services pro-vided by the clinic which serves not only UCF but our entire community. I believe every member knows, has known or will know someone who has been affected by a disorder that has rendered them in need of the services of the CDC. If you were unable to attend the luncheon I highly recommend you take the opportu-nity to learn about this wonderful resource our univer-sity has to offer. If you did attend the luncheon I know that you will do your part as a member and spread the good word about the CDC at UCF! I can-not give enough thanks to Dr. Janet Whiteside from the UCF Communication Disorders Clinic and her graduate student, Barbara Hancock, for their participa-tion. To tag on to luncheon news, it is with great en-thusiasm that I look forward to our Spring Luncheon where we will have the renowned anthropologists, Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase, as our guest presenters. All details of the luncheon are available in this newsletter. I look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, turn off the heat, open the windows and breathe in the beautiful Central Florida fresh air! Warmest regards,
Pam

The last event of UCF Town & Gown Council’s year is approaching. You won’t want to miss the
annual Spring Luncheon scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at Maison et Jardin in Alta-monte Springs, the same location we gathered at for the Friendship Luncheon. Registration and networking commence at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon and program will run from noon–1:30 p.m. The Spring Luncheon program will be presented by the Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase, renowned anthro-pologists who have studied the magnificent Mayan ruins in Belize. The installation of Town & Gown Council’s officers for 2011-2012 will also take place at this luncheon. Please RSVP by Wednesday, April 13, 2011. You may do so on the Town & Gown member portal http://www.ucftownandgown.com. We are happy to accept your check via mail, or at the event, however, you may also make payment for the event through PayPal once on the member portal. Guests are welcome; in fact, this will be the last opportunity for members to bring guests to an event, in order to fulfill our by-laws requirement that prospective members attend two events in the year prior to sponsorship for membership in the organization. Active members also have a duty to attend two events per UCF Town & Gown Council year, August through May. The cost for the Spring Luncheon is $25 per person. All RSVPs must be paid regardless of atten-dance, as UCF Town & Gown Council is charged for each reservation. Please note if you, or any of your guests, have any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, food allergies, etc.). We look forward to see-ing you at the Spring Luncheon.

Holiday Coffee Fundraiser
The spirit of the holidays was abundant at the annual Holiday Coffee hosted at Burnett
House by UCF First Lady Martha Hitt. This year, as it did last year, the event was to
benefit the Coalition for the Homeless. In these difficult economic times, the Coalition
has seen an increase of families with young children needing assistance. In addition to
monetary donations, a request was made for items such as diapers and baby wipes as
they are in high demand.
Thanks to the generosity of the members of UCF’s Town & Gown Council and the
UCF Women’s Club $5,120 was raised in addition to donations for the items requested.
Approximately 200 members from both organizations attended the morning event.
During her remarks to the gathering, UCF First Lady Martha Hitt noted that this is the
first holiday event without the presence of our beloved Frances Millican, who passed
away on December 28, 2009. This event honors her memory and shows Central Flor-
ida the active role UCF and its friendship partners take in the community.
On December 5, 2010, Town & Gown members and their guests were treated
to a performance of ―Dames at Sea‖ in the UCF Black Box Theatre. ―Dames
At Sea‖ is a musical comedy inspired by 1930s Hollywood director and chore-
ographer Busby Berkeley which pays homage to ―42nd Street,‖ complete with
the theme of a young girl going to Broadway and making it big. The story is
told through musical numbers and tap dancing by UCF’s talented drama and
dance students.
Not long after the presentation of ―Dames at Sea‖ ended on campus, the UCF Conservatory Theatre’s production was one of six university productions se-lected to perform at the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Region 4 Festival in Daytona Beach. This is a great honor for university theatre and Town & Gown was privileged to have had the opportunity to witness such fine acting. The one intermission during the play gave the audience to see the backstage crew at work switching out sets for the second act. In such an inti-mate performance space such as the Black Box, the audience and the perform-ers are within such close proximity when confetti flew it fell in the laps of those in the first few rows. Prior to the performance, the audience was treated to a dessert and champagne reception, and given a chance to share greetings for the holiday season.

Did you Know...
Important news and information was imparted to Town & Gown members and their guests
at the annual Friendship Luncheon, held at its traditional meeting place Maison Jardin in Al-
tamonte Springs. This year’s luncheon speaker, Dr. Janet Whiteside, the director of and a
clinical educator at the UCF Communication Disorders Clinic, shared lessons about restoring
the ability to speak for persons with aphasia, stroke survivors, and assisting persons with
fluency disorders, such as stuttering. Dr. Whiteside shared the story of her own personal
struggle with a speech disorders and how her childhood experiences shaped her voyage into
this challenging vocation.
A highlight of Dr. Whiteside’s speech was the discussion of Aphasia House. The therapeutic
services of this facility, established in 2010, give aphasia sufferers a six-week intensive pro-
gram to help them regain the ability to speak. This is the only facility of its kind in Central
Florida. Each room is outfitted to resemble a familiar space in a home, including a kitchen,
garden patio and garage. The rooms are designed to encourage conversations held during the
normal course of a day. UCF graduate students studying communication sciences and disor-
ders provide individualized and group therapy under the supervision of certified clinical fac-
ulty. Barbara Hancock, a graduate student who accompanied Dr. Whiteside spoke of her
work at Aphasia House and in the Communications Disorders Clinic. Barbara is the next
generation of speech and language pathologist and she praised the program for its in-depth
training. Treatment at Aphasia House is not free, but the facility takes Medicare and will work
with participants to fill out the paperwork for reimbursement.
Those interested in learning more about the program at The Aphasia House may call 407-882

You can help make our events even more enjoyable. Here’s how ---
When you receive your invitation to an event that has an associated cost, or is free, and requests an RSVP, please pay special atten-tion to the RSVP deadline. You may RSVP on line through the Town & Gown Council member portal at http://
www.ucftownandgown.com . You may also call or e-mail the listed RSVP recipient by the date indicated, so that you will be included in our counts. We hope that you will bring guests to Town & Gown events, when guest events are indicated. If you are doing so, please provide the spelling of your guests’ names when you are making your reservations. We want to have every name spelled correctly on the name tags! Thanks to all our members for making our events a success! **If you have any dietary restrictions, please indicate this information when making your RSVP. Thanks for your help!!!
