Rapid growth is occurringacross Central Florida - theUCF Business IncubationProgram (UCFBIP) is havinga tremendous impact on theregion, helping more than 140emerging companies since itsfounding in 1999, creatingmorethan$200million(*basedon 2009 study) in local annualrevenue and generating morethan 1,600 new jobs with anaveragesalaryof$59,000. In early June, officialsannounced a partnershipbetween Volusia County andthe UCFBIP to open a newincubation site at the Daytona Beach International AirportComplex,settoopenbytheendof2010.
Construction for the newUCF Business Incubator inKissimmee started on June24, where officials from UCF,the City of Kissimmee andOsceola County hosted agroundbreaking ceremony. Theincubator is located at the CityCentre Kissimmee building, at111EastMonumentAvenue. andmaintenanceofadiversegroupofeventand sporting venues in the county, andthe communities of Kissimmee, St. Cloud,Poinciana,Harmony,andCelebration. Toumazos has been an EconomicDevelopmentveteranfornearlytwodecades.Herresponsibilitiesincludeassistingbusinessprospectswithpropertysearches,incentives,and fast track permitting. Since beginningher duties with Osceola County in 2000as the first-ever Economic DevelopmentDepartment Director, she has beeninstrumental in creating and/or assistingin the relocation of several businesses thatresultedinmorethan4,000newjobsforthecommunity. Business incubation programsare great catalysts to create these jobs andstartnewcompanies. Research has shown that 87 percentof those companies who graduate from anincubation program are still in businessfiveyearsaftergraduating. “In these tougheconomictimes,itisessentialtogrowourowncompanies.TheUCFbusinessincubatorsinKissimmeeandSt.Cloudarenotonlyagreatresourceforourentrepreneurs,butalsogreattools to add to our economic developmenttoolbox,”saidToumazos. A graduate of the University of SouthFlorida,Toumazos is the recipient of manyawards and honors, such as the AmericanBusiness Women’s Association BusinessWoman of the Year. She was appointed in2007 by Florida Governor Charlie Crist toserve on the Valencia Community CollegeBoardofTrustees.FormerFloridaGovernorJebBushappointedher in2004totheEastCentralFloridaRegionalPlanningCouncil.She is also the state representative to theSouthern Economic Development Council

Triplett played an integral part inbringingafirstclassUCFbusinessincubatorto the City of Sanford’s downtown district.After only a fewmonthsof opening, itwasapparent that additional space was neededduetotheoverwhelmingdemand.Triplett,along with Bob Tunis, Executive Directorof the Downtown Sanford’s CRA, pushedto open additional incubator space afteronly three months of operation and whichwas unanimously approved for funding.“I believe that this project was one of themost successful in the organization, notto mention that it has brought five newbusinesses, and counting, to a district thathas seen many vacancies over the last fewyears,”Triplettstated,“Definitelyawin-winforallthoseinvolved.” Jeff Triplett’s leadership resumeincludes acting as vice-chairman for theSanford Airport Authority and being amember of the Seminole County CharterReview Commission. Robert “Bob” Tunis isthe Sanford city officialwho orchestrated therecent creation of theUCFBusinessIncubator- Sanford. He servesas the EconomicDevelopment Directorfor the City of Sanford,
Florida, as well as Executive Director ofthe Sanford Community RedevelopmentAgency (CRA),whichprovides the fundingfor the incubator. Tunis has over 20 yearsof economic development experience at thefederal,state,andlocalgovernmentlevels. TheUCFBusiness Incubator - Sanfordresulted from an initial meeting betweenBob, Tom O’Neal, Executive Director ofthe UCF Business Incubation Program andEd Schons, UCF’s Director of EconomicDevelopment, inDecember2008.Planningfor the incubator started immediatelywith the Sanford CRA agreeing to coveroperational costs for the facility. The UCFBusiness Incubator - Sanford, located inthe historic Welaka Building in downtownSanford,wasupandrunninginrecordtime,opening its doors officially on September10, 2009. Within three months the facilitywasfullyoccupiedwitheightcompanies.InJanuaryofthisyear,theSanfordCRABoardvoted to expand the facility by 50%, tofurtheritspresentsizeof6,000squarefeet. Before arriving in Florida, Tunis wasExecutive Director of the Lincoln CountyEconomicDevelopmentCouncilinMontana.Duringthe1990’s,heworkedfortheAlberta,Canada government as the EuropeanTradeandInvestmentDirector.Priortothat,Tunisspent12yearsasaCanadianForeignServiceOfficer in Germany, Thailand, Trinidad,andJamaica.Hehasdualcitizenship in theUnitedStatesandCanada.Tunisreceivedhisbachelor’sdegreefromMcGillUniversityinMontreal.

On April 28, the UCFBIP hosted aformaldedicationandgrandopeningforitsnew site in St. Cloud. Nearly 200 peopleattendedtheribboncuttingceremonyevent,whichwasheldatthenew14,000squarefootfacility,locatedat3201BudingerAvenue. Already, four incubation clientcompanies have been accepted to the newfacility. METSI,TeamEnergy, Inc.,GoingGreen Savings, Inc. and IndieFest arescheduled to move in during the month ofJuly.Eventually,theSt.Cloudincubatorcanaccommodateupto20clientcompanies. James M. Bowie was hired as the sitemanager of the UCF Business Incubator -St.Cloud.“TheUCFOfficeofResearch&Commercialization has laid the foundation
forbusinessdevelopmentwith the new businessincubator,” said Bowie.“Thiswasmadepossibleby the financial &leadership commitmentby both the City ofSt. Cloud and OsceolaCounty. The incubator,
which has four client companies moving inthissummer,willflourishasthewordspreadsofthisfirst-classfacilityandtheplacetobetogrowabusiness.” Bowiehasover20yearsofexperienceinbusiness development and is a “Certified”IncubatorDirectorbytheNationalBusinessIncubator Association (NBIA). He haspreviously worked in business developmentat AT&T, Orkin and four entrepreneurstart-ups. He also served as director of theColumbus State University TechnologyIncubator in Columbus, GA from 2006
through 2009. Bowie earned his BBA andMBADegreesatTexasChristianUniversity,a school that U.S. News & World ReportreportedashavingoneofthehighestrankingBusinessSchoolEntrepreneurshipCenters “BusinessincubationisayoungindustryandJimBowieisoneofthemostexperiencedincubatoradministratorswehaverecruited,”Hogan said. “We expect him to play a bigrole in the growth of the UCF BusinessIncubation Program in St. Cloud,” headded. InFebruary,anopenhousewasheldforthe UCF Business Incubator – Leesburg,which houses both the Small BusinessDevelopment Center (SBDC) as well asthe UCF Business Incubation Program.This incubator is a partnership betweenUCF, Lake County Government, the Cityof Leesburg and the Florida High TechCorridor Council. The SBDC at UCF hasassisted entrepreneurs in creating 1,827jobs, win awards worth $31.4 million, andincrease sales by $31.7 million in the pastyear as well as providing services to eightdifferentcounties. The Leesburg incubator providestools, training and infrastructure to start-up companies. Five client companies havealready joined the UCFBIP in Leesburgand the facility currently can accommodateseven client companies. The companiesinclude Green Solar Solutions, LLC, Mr.Handyman, Hometown Health TV, LLC,EvergreenConstructionManagement,LLC,and a virtual UCF company called TheImaginationShop.

With over17yearsexperienceasahigh-techexecutivein engineering and business, he excels atguiding and mentoring new and smallbusinesses,havinghadsuccessinraisingfirstroundventurecapital.Spencerisagraduateof Brown University with a Bachelor ofScienceinElectricalEngineering. Florida Economic Gardening Institute (FEGI) Accelerates Growth of Second-Stage Companies

While incubation programs andinnovation centers facilitate growth andsuccess for new and small businesses, theFlorida Economic Gardening Institute(FEGI) aims to provide “second stage”companies,thosebusinessesthathavepassedtheentrepreneurialstage,withthetoolsandassistance to accelerate their growth andincreaseemploymentthroughoutFlorida.
FEGI was established late last year atUCFreceiving its funding fromtheFloridaLegislature. By the end of June, over 100companieshadalreadyenrolledinGrowFL,FEGI’s Technical Assistance Program.Companies working with the GrowFLprogram have created 327 new jobs since
Novemberof2009. About5,000companiesinFloridameetthe qualifications to enter the program.Those who qualify must be engaged inmanufacturing, finance and insuranceservices, wholesale trade, informationindustries, professional, scientific, andtechnical services, management services, oradministrativeandsupportservices. “Manyofthecompaniesthatqualifyarepastgraduatesofincubatorprogramsaroundthe state,” says O’Neal. “Providing accessto these tools and resources is a continuedbenefitforanyincubatorprogram.” With more than 24 years of experienceincorporatemanagement,Fran KorosechasbeenappointedthedirectorofclientservicesfortheFEGI. “Fran Korosec is a seasoned executivewith a unique combination of businessdevelopment/sales, program management,and technical expertise. We expect him toplayamajor role in thegrowthandsuccessof the Economic Gardening Institute,” said
Dr. O’Neal, executivedirector of the FloridaEconomic GardeningInstitute. Korosec haspreviouslyheldexecutivepositions at Bell &Howell, LockheedMartin, and IBM. He

**TRIBUTE - Doug Peeples, a Co-Founder of Technology Assurance Labs, passed this May. He was well known by the UCFBIP staff and will be greatly missed.
