Roy A. Grichuk works as Director of Piping at Fluor in Sugar Land, Texas, USA. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston and has nearly 30 years of experience in piping engineering.

During his career at Fluor, Roy has held a variety of positions, including Lead Piping Materials Engineer (PME) for several multimillion projects, Supervisor of the PME group that averages between 15 and 30 employees, Area Lead Piping Engineer and Technical Fellow. His true passion has always been design. Roy has particularly enjoyed his involvement with the selection process for piping material, including specifying component standards for the materials specified for individual process streams, finishing out the process by assisting in the purchasing of components, working out contracts technically with fabricators, and solving design issues during installation.

Roy is deeply involved with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B31.3 Committee which is part of the ASME Board on Pressure Technology, Codes and Standards. He is currently a member of the Subgroup on Materials, Chair of the B31 Materials Technical Committee and a member of the B31 Main Committee.

Metals, in particular stainless steel, have the ability to provide lightweight, durable and aesthetic characteristics for visible surfaces. Stainless steel can impart variable specular influences on the interplay of light across a surface. This lecture will provide an overview of current technological approaches to producing custom surfaces and forms. It will showcase what will be possible in the near future – the articulated façade and the design platform that connects designers to fabricators.

RESILIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STAINLESS STEELSustainability is a global megatrend with the potential to influence every industry and application. Green building, infrastructure and other rating systems now emphasize material longevity and life cycle analysis. ‘Resilient design’ is increasingly important because of terrorism concerns and environmental changes, such as coastal flooding and seismic events. These developments present tremendous opportunities for stainless steel, but fully capitalizing on them requires an understanding of the opportunity, third-party documentation, proac-tive education of decision makers and active participation to guide sustainability standards development. The lecture will review the opportunities for stainless steel and suggested actions.

THE FUTURE IS ULTRA-LIGHTAlthough electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, there is still room for improvements in the current ‘internal combustion engine’ automotive segment. One such opportunity is to optimize the weight of automotive components, thereby lowering fuel consumption and making cars more environmentally friend-ly. This lecture will review various types of materials and technologies used in exhaust system manufacture, including titanium, stainless steel, nickel superalloys and composites, and discuss their benefits and drawbacks during the development of an ultra-light exhaust. Also discussed will be different production processes con-cerning the development of a lightweight product.

Failure or low operational efficiency of a heat exchanger can lead to significant lost-opportunity costs for process plant operators. Fouling and under-deposit corrosion are among the most typical factors behind these risks. This workshop will address two main strategies to reduce maintenance costs and improve the reliability of heat exchangers. The first one is material upgrade from lower-alloyed stainless steels to highly corrosion-resistant duplex grades, while the second one involves corrosion mitigation by means of surface modification and, more specifically, electropolishing. Following four short presentations detailing these strategies, delegates will be invited to pose questions to the workshop panel and share their own experiences and problems related to heat exchanger materials and performance. This is especially the case in chloride-containing environments where many austenitic grades are failing due to stress corrosion cracking. However, even DSS have their limitations, for example, when a substantial chloride load is combined with a low-pH environment. Understanding the limits of application of DSS grades is therefore crucial to prevent unexpected – and costly – failures. The presentations in this interactive session will address both the application limits as well as how these are linked to the specific material structure of DSS. These presentations will be shorter than those given in the preceding session on the same subject, to allow for more comments and questions from the audience. 3D printing is entering the mainstream, not only in the manufacture of consumer products, but also in the production of demanding industrial applications. Although, technically speaking, availability is not an inherent material property, its importance is on a par with the chemical composition, quality, finish and any other material characteristic. Long lead times can delay projects, encourage the use of unsafe products, and have an adverse effect on all industry stakeholders. Why does it take so long to manufacture/deliver certain materials, particularly non-standard CRAs? What can mills, fabricators and vendors do to improve their lead times? What role do end users and EPC contractors play in this process? How can all parties forming the supply chain work together to make hard-to-get products and materials more readily available? Counterfeit stainless steel components have caused a large number of incidents in recent years and present an increasing risk in the current cost-constrained business climate. To combat this problem, an integral approach will be needed, involving the entire supply chain and other key stakeholders. The recent development of ISO 17781 for duplex stainless steels and related alignment of internal standards between end users will be discussed. The objective of this workshop is to explore and propose additional industry initiatives that could further mitigate the manufacture and use of counterfeit products.

Held in the open area of the North Hall, the three-day program of presentations will be open and free to all visitors. Each of the 20-minute presentations will be followed by a Question & Answer session, allowing all audience members to boost their knowledge as well as to share their own expertise.
