News: What’s Happening at NVdS?
Jenny Bray Training and Consulting, in partnership with Nambucca Valley disAbility Services Inc. and the Respite Support Service (formerly the Mid-North Coast Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre), will be providing a FREE 2 hour information session for families on preparing for the NDIS planning appointment. When? Tuesday 17 November 2015 Where? Port Macquarie (Venue to be confirmed) The purpose is to explain the NDIS from the point of view of families and to help families to contribute to their NDIS Planning meeting with confidence. In partnership with NVdS and the Respite Support Service, respite can be arranged for families who need it in order to attend.
Please contact the NVdS office if you are interested in attending this session: (Starts about10am: time to be confirmed). We can organise transport for some people if needed.
Also on 17 November, Jenny Bray Training and Consulting will provide a FREE 2 hour session for Service Providers on changing business practices in readiness for the NDIS. Jenny has extensive current experience supporting organisations to cut through to massive amount of information, and get to the point of what critical changes are needed, and how to go about making those changes.
Person Centred
Thinking Training
We recently had Karen Southgate from Platinum Psychology & Consulting Services conduct Person Centred Thinking with some of our newer staff. Karen is very generous with her information and a very experienced presenter who has great knowledge of what Person Centredness is and how to practically apply it.
Balancing Rights, Balancing Risks
Training
Balancing Rights, Balancing Risks was presented in June to all but a few staff by Jenny Bray from Jenny Bray Training & Consulting. Jenny has a very good grasp on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), how it is working in the trial sites and how staff need to balance Client choice with their Duty of Care.
Jenny is a very confident, knowledgeable and skilled presenter who has a range of material to
present to services, families and boards. She also will customise training or material to suit most audiences and situations.
National Disability Services –
the practicalities of the NDIS
We were very lucky to get Joanne McLean from National Disability Services (NDS) to speak to most staff about how the NDIS is currently working in the trial sites and what it means for support staff in our area once it is fully implemented. Whilst there are still some unanswered questions about the NDIS, Joanne was able to give staff all of the
available information and the effects on frontline staff.
Diploma of Disability
We have 9 (yes 9!) staff undertaking the Diploma of Disability through TAFE NSW. Realising that this was a great opportunity to make an investment in our staff which helps them gain some of the more advanced skills, NVdS have paid for the training. Staff meet with their trainer and do the work required to complete the course in their own time. I’m sure that our current and future Clients will benefit from NVdS staff acquiring these skills and abilities!
Upcoming Staff Training
Epilepsy Action is conducting several Webinars on Epilepsy for NVdS in August.

Family and Community Services (FACS) have announced the
publication of the Individual Funding Handbook
It is designed to assist people with disability in receipt of individual
funding provided by ADHC, their family and carers, and
intermediaries who administer the funding on their behalf. You
can contact Liddy at Nambucca Valley disability Services on
(02) 65689802, if you don’t have access to a computer.
You can follow this link on our website if you do.
NSW is preparing for the National Disability Insurance Scheme
(NDIS), by actively expanding individual funding arrangements for
disability services under the Living Life My Way (LLMW)
Framework and Ready Together reforms. Through LLMW, people
currently receiving FACS disability funding are able to convert and/
or combine their disability supports into an individualised funding
arrangement.
The expansion of individualised funding will place people with
disability, their families, carers, as well as providers and the NSW
disability service system, in the best possible position to transition
seamlessly to the NDIS.
In order to provide clarity and create a fairer system for service
users, multiple individualised funding program guidelines have
been streamlined into a single document: the Individual Funding
Handbook.
The Handbook gives people guidance to the rules that apply when
managing individual funding provided by ADHC, including what it
can and cannot be used for. The simplified arrangements in the
Handbook will also assist people to prepare for the NDIS. Source: http://www.adhc.nsw.gov.au/?a=320504

All this NDS and NDIS is confusing isn't it???
Just to clarify, NDS is “National Disability Services”, which is the Peak Body for Disability Service
Providers in regard to training, information, capacity-building and advocacy for services such as ours. NDS
often involves itself at state and federal government level to speak up for people with disabilities and the
services that provide their support. NDS is currently funded by the State Government and not connected to
the NDIS except to give us information about it.
NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is the new national system of funding for people
with disabilities and their families, being implemented Australia—wide over the next few years. Another
term to become familiar with is NDIA, the National Disability Insurance Agency, which will be the governing
body holding and distributing the funds for people under the NDIS.

ClubConnectOpen! Nambucca Valley disAbility Ser-
vices opened our new premises,
ClubConnect, on 24th June! The
old Anne Gillin’s office was taken
over by NVdS at the end of last
year and has now been renovated
to offer a space for Clients to de-
velop skills and participate in a
variety of activities such as music,
computer, art and craft, drama,
cooking, personal grooming and
personal safety.
It is also a meeting place for
people who might be going
to activities elsewhere. NVdS
also supports Clients to at-
tend health related activities,
such as ten pin bowling,
swimming, gym, exercise
classes and therapies.
7
ClubConnectOpen!
The opening was a great success with around 35 people attending and performances by the Poets & Performers Group. After much deliberation over the names suggested by Clients and families for the new space, the name ClubConnect has been chosen to reflect the intended use of the space. NVdS are very much hoping that local community members will drop in for a cuppa and some socialising or participate in some of the activities with the Clients. People are invited to drop in and meet Cherry, one of the Support Coordinators, and discuss how they can be part of the action at ClubConnect. People can also call us on 65689802 or check our website www.nambuccavalleydisabilityservices.com.au or NVdS facebook page.

Ronnie’s holiday at Surfers.
In May, Ronnie went on a 10 day holiday with her Mum and Rob where they stayed overlooking the beach at Surfers Paradise.
They travelled on the Surfers Paradise tram from the beginning to the end. Ronnie saw where the 2016 Common-wealth Games will be held. Ronnie was interested in the swimming and diving pools. We went 10 pin bowling and Rob won the first game and Ronnie won the second.
Our family came down from Brisbane to visit us and also had fun playing ten pin bowls.
On May 18, we had a great time at Mov-ie World. Ronnie and Rob went on the Rio Bravo water ride twice and got wet, as their carriage came down the hill into the water.
Ronnie also saw the 4D movie RIO at the Roxy Theatre at Movie World. The 4D included rocking seats and squirting water (supposedly from birds as they appeared to fly towards us). Watching the movie was strenuous work!
We went to SeaWorld at Southport and watched the porpoise show and visited the polar bear, the penguins, seals and sea lions. We all went on the cable car over the SeaWorld complex, then Rob
and Ronnie went on the Dragon Boat ride which meant they got a little wet again when travelling through the water.
On May 20 we went back to Movie World for the Grand Parade of all the comic and movie characters. We thoroughly enjoyed this. At the end of the parade thousands of water bubbles were released; Ronnie loved it!
22nd May was Ronnie’s 51st Birthday
and she had lots of phone calls and
singing the Happy Birthday song. We drove down to Coolangatta, then drove back to Surfers Paradise where we lunched at Pancakes on The Rocks, Ronnie's choice. Ronnie's lunch was chocolate and very decadent. In the evening we went to The Outback Spectacular dinner and show. Fantastic. Ronnie loved it, as did Rob and I. Every-thing was professional, friendly and enjoyable.
The next couple of days was spent walk-ing, shopping and catching up with fami-ly before heading home on 25th May. Overall a great trip!
Ronnie liked this ten pin bowl

Kim and Cherry took
Sarah Rope and Nick Sayer to Sydney to see the
We flew down to Sydney, (it being the first time flying for
both Nick and Sarah, who thoroughly enjoyed it). After
checking into the Hotel, we sorted sleeping arrangements,
unpacked and then had a
cuppa.
We then went to
town,
walking for miles.
getting lost. and walking
a few more
miles. We had dinner,
then caught a ferry so we could see the Vivid
Lights Festival from the Harbour. That was amazing with the Opera
House Roof showing the most
beautiful colours and designs and non-stop changing colours on the
Harbour Bridge. The ferries and boats in the Harbour also had a
full display of coloured lights,
The tall buildings surrounding the harbour constantly changed
colours and designs with one building showing bats, dragons,
birds, crawling and flying all over it. Sarah and Nick really enjoyed
the night; Sarah danced in the
street to the Digeridoo music with so much
excitement
and Nick couldn't keep his eyes off the lights with a "yeah!!
"every now and then. We had coffee when we arrived back at
Circular Quay then walked
around the streets looking at all the other lights before heading
back to the Hotel for a much needed sleep.
Up the next morning and walked
to Circular Quay, had breakfast on the water front before
catching the ferry over to Taronga Zoo. Lots more walking,
before having lunch there. Out
of all the animals I think Sarah enjoyed the goats the best as
she wouldn't stop smiling at them. We then went on the
Cable Car down the hill to the
ferry; Sarah loved the cable car and Nick eventually enjoyed it
after a bit of anxiety at the
start. We caught the ferry back then taxi to the hotel, a quick
cuppa then shower and dressed for the
Rocky Horror Show!!!
Nick got dressed up in his
favourite Rocky Horror costume
and totally enjoyed the night,
danced with ladies in the
front row at the end and was beckoned over by Craig
McLachlan for a hand shake
and a hug. Taxi back to Circular Quay, had a late
dinner then back to the hotel to a welcoming bed.
Up next morning packed then out to breakfast
before heading to
Paddy's Market where we all purchased
something, before collecting our bags and
heading out to the
Airport for the flight home.
A most colourful and enjoyable
3 days were had by all.

THE GRAND THE GRAND CHALLENGECHALLENGE
FIREBIRDSFIREBIRDS
On Saturday the 30th of May,
The Firebirds participated in the “Grand Challenge” Ten Pin
Bowling Competition at “Galactic 10 Pin Bowls” at Kempsey.
There were a total of 33 players from Kempsey and Nambucca Valley.
Kempsey were the worthy winners. Most outstanding attribute of the
day was the sportsmanship shown by both teams and all players in
their acknowledgment of each other’s efforts. There were heaps of
strikes and spares achieved on the day, well done Firebirds!
Trophies will be received by the winners and are currently being
prepared for presentation.
Plenty of laughs and fun was had by all. Everyone had pizza for lunch
which was very enjoyable. Best wishes to Dave, who has managed the
Kempsey 10 pin Bowling Centre for many years and is leaving to head
for greener pastures. Dave was always very helpful and encouraging to
the bowlers, he will be missed
Congratulations to new manager, Mat, and his family for doing such a
great job organising such a successful tournament. All the players are
looking forward to continuing 10 Pin Bowls in the future.

David Walker and Stuart Relf went
to Super A Mart for a “Meet and
Greet” held by the NSW State of
Origin Blues players.
Dave met Paul Gallen and told him
“You need to win more and bring
home the Trophies.” When Paul Gallen asked Dave
“How? ” Dave had everyone in stitches when he told
Paul, “You need to run faster and get more tries”.
A few of the Players signed autographs for Dave and
Stuart who enjoyed some lively banter and had a great
