The papers of UAW Region 8 were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in December of 1976 by B. W. Bothe, Assistant Director of the Regional Office and were opened for research in June of 1985.

Region 8 which represents approximately 53,000 UAW members in the southeast is comprised of Alabama, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and a portion of south-central Pennsylvania. Sub-Regional offices are situated in Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlotte, Hagerstown, Memphis, Nashville, Wilmington, and York.

At the 1940 UAW Convention H. Lawrence Smith was elected to the International Executive Board to represent the members of Region 8. In 1941 Thomas J. Starling was named Regional Director, and he served until 1953 when he was followed in that office by Panfilo J. Ciampa. From 1955 until 1957 Norman Seaton was Director. He was succeeded by E. T. Michael who held the office for twenty-seven years. When he retired in 1984 George Smith was elected, and he is the current Regional Director.

The papers in this collection concern the administration of UAW locals in the southeastern states. Files relate to contract negotiations, grievances, political action, and race relations. One series consists of the files of George L. Holloway, Jr., a Black UAW official working in the Memphis Sub-Regional Office. Another series is made up of files relating to the now-defunct UAW Local 344 representing the workers of the American Standard Corporation in Baltimore.

The records in this series range from handwritten negotiation notes arranged by corporation to correspondence with the international departments of the UAW, to contract agreements, to correspondence with Region 8 staff members, to printed materials circulated by the UAW, the AFL-CIO, the Democratic Party, COPE and the NAACP. The records are arranged alphabetically by folder heading within chronological subseries. These groupings follow those established by the Regional Office with the exception of the "Pre-1948" subseries which is employed as a comprehensive category for all early Regional Office records. Regional staff files are arranged alphabetically at the end of each subseries. These files contain correspondence between the Regional Office and its field representatives but also include representative travel and expense reports. The span dates of a particular folder listing coincide with those of the subseries unless otherwise indicated.

Series II: Regional Correspondence with Region 8 Locals

    Boxes 86 thru 146 (1940-1969)

The records in this series range from handwritten negotiation notes to correspondence, to printed notices and reports, to legal briefs and final reports. All are organized by Local number within chronological subseries as designated by the original Regional arrangement scheme. Again the category "Pre-1948" was created to deal with the early records that do not otherwise fit into one of the Office's chronological groups. The span dates of a particular folder coinside with those of the subseries unless otherwise indicated.

    cases from Locals: 840, 955, 1104) 1951-1966 Boxes 156-157

Subseries IIIe: BOP Division Grievances 1948-1957 Boxes 158-164 Subseries IIIf: Chevrolet Division Grievances 1940-68 Boxes 165-170 Subseries IIIg: Fisher Body Division Grievances

1968-1970 Boxes 186-193 Subseries IIIi: GM Assembly Division Parts

    Warehouse Grievances 1967-1968 Boxes 193

The records in this series are exclusively grievance appeal cases handled by the Regional Office. When received, most of these files were arranged by General Motors Division, such as Buick-Olsmobile-Pontiac or Fisher Body. The remainder were grouped according to the Local from which the grievance originated. Most case materials are stapled together and lack file folders. All grievance records are now arranged by Local number or GM Division and then by Appeal Case number. The Case numbers usually, but not always, follow in chronological order.

Series IV: George L. Holloway Jr. Office Files

    Boxes 194 thru 195 (1956-1968)

Subseries IVa: Subject Correspondence Files 1961-1968 Box 194 Subseries IVb: UAW Local Correspondence Files 1958-1968 Box 195

Unlike all of the other records received from Region 8, the papers in Series IV include the personal files of a UAW International Representative, George L. Holloway Jr., who is employed by Region 8. George Holloway was for some time connected with UAW Local 988 (Memphis) and subsequently worked out of the Memphis Sub-Regional Office of Region 8. As a Black union official, he was vitally concerned with integration within the UAW and the rights of Black workers. His papers are divided into two arbitrary groups: subject files and UAW Local files. All of the original file headings have been retained. The bulk of Series IV materials deal with UAW matters in the period of the late 1950's and the 1960's.

  • Series V: Files relating to Local 344

    Boxes 196 thru 199 (1943-1969)

The records in this series are correspondence between the Region and Local 344, agreements, letters of understanding and other contract material, and grievances. The Region's file headings and arrangement have been retained. Non-grievance material is arranged chronologically, with topical headings within chronological order. Grievances are divided into those arbitrated and others. The former are arranged according to the case number assigned by the American Arbitration Association. The last six digits of this number are followed by the number assigned by the union and, occasionally, the grievant's name. The latter group were arranged chronologically and grouped in folders by year during inventorying.
