ERIC JACK, Ph.D.Dean, Collat School of Business
As one of the leading business schools in the Southeast, our mission at UAB’s Collat School of Business is to create and disseminate business knowledge that transforms the lives of our students and stakeholders. We do this by leveraging our locational advantages for the benefit of our community, state and global constituents and are well known for our focus on leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship.
We have made great progress this year in enriching our students’ experiences, advancing faculty excellence, and engaging our stakeholders. We are growing, both in student enrollment and in the number of degree programs we offer. Our students are excelling on the national stage, earning awards and recognitions at unprecedented levels. Our MBA is now ranked in the top 15% of part-time programs nationally by U.S. News & World Report. We have recruited some of the top academic researchers in the country who are publishing in top journals and participating in our technology commercialization program. In fact, more than60% of our faculty members have joined us since 2009 and are highly engaged. And perhaps most significantly, we received a $25 million transformative endowment this year that will take our growing business school to the next level.
We are enormously proud of our achievements this year and are poised to continue our progress in 2015 as we grow our academic programs and our service work in innovation and entrepreneurship. Thank you for your interest in the Collat School of Business at UAB!
Sincerely,
Eric Jack, Ph.D.

Collat Honors Program Welcomes Record-Breaking ClassThe Collat Business Honors program attracted its largest cohort to date. The 2015 cohort is also a record-breaker in the diversity of students’ majors. All of the business disciplines are represented, including accounting, economics, finance, industrial distribution, information systems, management and marketing. In addition, two biology majors, two math majors, a healthcare management major and a neuroscience major, all with a keen interest in business, have joined the program from other schools. One of the highlights of the program is a strategic leadership course in which CEOs of large organizations present to and interact with students. Honors students also complete an independent study course in which they make presentations at the UAB Undergraduate Research Expo during their senior year.
Collat Recognized as a Top School for Professional Sales EducationCollat’s Professional Sales Certificate program, a competitive program that accepts students from all disciplines across the university, was named one of the nation’s Top University Sales Programs by the Sales Education Foundation. Collat’s professional sales program is designed to provide advanced business-to-business sales skills and to teach the latest tools and trends in professional selling. Since its inception in 2008, more than 100 students have graduated from the program. “Program graduates are in demand for two primary reasons,” says Collat marketing professor John Hansen, Ph.D. “First, they are less likely to quit as they know better what a career in professional sales entails. Second, and more importantly, they are more likely to sell better faster given the training they receive in the program. They are more productive.”
UAB MBA Climbs in Rankings to #39Our MBA program catapulted from 73rd to 39th this year in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report rankings and is now ranked in the top 15% of part-time MBA programs in the country. The rankings jump followed an extensive revamping of the program’s curriculum, which has drawn record interest from new students. “The curriculum has been streamlined to promote a standardized path to completion as well as a cohort experience for our students,” says MBA program director Ken Miller, Ed.D. “This greatly enhances networking opportunities that are vital to a quality MBA experience.”
Collat Adds Undergraduate and Graduate Online Degree ProgramsIn response to student demand for flexible classroom options, the Collat School of Business added to its portfolio of 100% online degrees. The undergraduate program, which previously offered only an accounting degree fully online, added five new fully online degree programs: economics, finance, information systems, management and marketing. The graduate school, which offered a Master of Accounting online, added a master’s degree in Management Information Systems. Enrollment in each program is exceeding expectations.

The Collat School of Business has invested heavily in the success of its students, and those investments are paying off. CSOB recently expanded the presence of its career services team within the school, adding staff and dedicating a six-room suite within the building to career and professional development. The new suite is an open, inviting place for students to drop in for resume reviews, career guidance and mentorship. It includes a welcoming reception area and interview rooms for convenient on-campus employer interviews.
The career services team also organized a new program called Career Peer Mentors that provides students with one-on-one coaching from experienced peers and gets them into a professional mindset early in their academic careers.
“The student response has been incredible,” said Rita Stewart-Hampton, Collat’s director of career services. “We’ve tripled the number
of students coming through our doors, and we’re seeing the younger students interested and engaged in what they need to do to land a job before they graduate.”
Additionally, CSOB added new, popular networking events to the school’s calendar. These fun, interactive events, such as speed networking and bowling, offered students and employers an opportunity to get to know each other and socialize before career fairs and on-campus interviews.
Collat also added a new drop-in tutoring lab in 2014 to provide students with a little extra academic help in their business courses. This free service assists all business students, but places special emphasis on quantitative courses.
Opening in January 2014, the Collat Tutoring Lab assisted more than 575 students in more than 1,500 sessions during the spring term. Students sought help in courses such as accounting, finance, economics and quantitative methods, and the program continued to grow. The tutors launched a Skype option for Collat’s online students so CSOB students can access the services from anywhere in the world.

LeadershipInnovation+ Entrepreneurship
Innovation Lab OpensThe CSOB recently unveiled a new Innovation Lab, an open, collaborative space inside Innovation Depot, Birmingham’s award-winning business incubator and the heart of Alabama’s entrepreneurship community.
“One of the things that we want to be able to do is train students who are capable of both thinking like entrepreneurs and who are capable of working in an entrepreneurial environment,” says Joel Dobbs, Collat’s Entrepreneur in Residence who also directs the new lab. “In the Birmingham area, one of the things we don’t have when starting up companies is experienced executives to run them. Part of our long-term strategy is to begin training students, to have them network with and work for companies at Innovation Depot after graduation and eventually get to where they’re capable of running these companies. Maybe they start their own companies.”
In addition to being a teaching space for students, it is an early phase business accelerator for student-led companies as well as those developed by faculty members at UAB. These companies
receive coaching and mentoring from Collat’s faculty as they enter the funding world and serve as a farm team for Innovation Depot.
Creating Tomorrow’s LeadersThe Collat School of Business recently received a $625,000 pledge from Amy and Duane Donner to sustain the Healthcare Leadership Academy over the next five years. Founded in 2009, the academy is a joint collaboration between the Collat School of Business and the School of Medicine, and it has helped the university retain promising health-focused faculty and staff. The academy’s mission is to identify and develop future leaders of the UAB academic medical center.
“This generous gift highlights the Donners’ continuing commitment to helping the Collat School of Business equip UAB’s health professionals with the highest-quality business training and the skills needed to lead in a turbulent health-care environment,” says Dean Eric Jack, Ph.D.. “Leaders aren’t born; they’re developed. Our program helps them develop these leadership skills by reflecting on themselves, their organizations, and the wider world.”
The brand new Innovation
Lab is both a teaching space for students as well as an early phase business accelerator for
student-led companies.
Program graduates represent all six health profession schools, including the schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Optometry, Public Health, and Health Professions, as well as administrators, including those from the UAB Health System, University Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, and the faculty practice plan.
Participants receive a broader understanding of the responsibilities of leaders, new perspectives on the critical leadership and managerial issues they face, and a deeper understanding and awareness of concepts and techniques relevant to management.
Design Class Partners Engineers + EntrepreneursA new, innovative CSOB class pairs engineering students with business students to design and commercialize marketable solutions to real world problems.
Students in the two-semester class work in teams, each tackling an actual design problem presented by an organization such as
the Lakeshore Foundation or United Cerebral Palsy. The teams engineer both a workable solution to the problem and a plan to bring their product to market. Past projects have included a wheelchair that toddlers can control with a joystick and an affordable home wheelchair weight scale.
“I learned quickly that engineers think and speak a different language,” says Cliff Goolsby, who took the class his senior year to gain entrepreneurial experience. He said the experience enabled the engineering students and the business students to understand their respective priorities during a product’s development. “The diversity of the two schools is what makes this class so special.”

The Collat School of Business honored its inaugural class of Collat Scholars and members of the Collat family at a reception in downtown Birmingham in October. The Collat Scholars program provides scholarships to recruit high-achieving, diverse students who demonstrate financial need, complementing the school’s previously established scholarships.
The program provides Collat Scholars with $5,000 per year for four years, and was created from a $25 million endowment provided by Charles and Patsy Collat in 2013 when the UAB School of Business was named in their honor. The endowment supports students, faculty and staff at the school, as well as student leadership and civic responsibility through the Collat Student Leaders and the Collat Honors programs. The 12 inaugural scholars and their family members enjoyed dinner and fellowship with former Mayer Electric CEO Charles Collat, the Collat family, Mayer Electric employees, and friends of the Collat School of Business. Four scholarships were named in honor of Jim Summerlin, Wes Smith, Vic Kester, and Jay Ziff, who have been key contributors to Mayer Electric’s success.

$28.9MILLION RAISED FOR COLLAT PRIORITIES
Thanks to a generous $25 million transformative gift from Charles and Patsy Collat in 2013, the Collat School of Business is well positioned to meet our ambitious goals for The Campaign for UAB: Give Something, Change Everything. The Collats’ endowment will fund scholarships, research and academic programs within the school, helping to raise our profile as a renowned business school focused on leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The campaign’s other priorities received a significant boost this year when faculty and staff came together during an internal fundraising drive to support the campaign. Nearly 100% of Collat’s faculty and staff participated.
Now the school is focused on raising
additional funds to build a $37.5 million
state-of-the-art facility that will house
several function including the business
school and UAB’s Institute for Innovation and
Entrepreneurship. With the strong support of
our donors, we hope to raise at least $15M
and support the rest with UAB internal funds.
“This building will be home to key initiatives in education, research and economic development,” said UAB President Ray L. Watts, MD. “It is inspiring to see that business leaders in Alabama believe in our plan and share our priorities.”
The school has raised more than $3 million to date to fund the new building, including a recent $1 million gift from Birmingham-based real estate company Medical Properties Trust to construct an auditorium, the anchor of the new building.
The new facility will be located on prime real estate at the corner of University Boulevard and 13th Street South, enhancing the exposure and presence of both Collat School of Business and the Institute.
“This new facility will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment and the technology infrastructure that will enable us to competitively recruit top faculty and staff dedicated to preparing the next generation of business leaders,” said Dean Eric Jack, Ph.D.
