HEALTH AND THE AMISH: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SURVEY

PREFACE

The purpose of this bibliography is to guide the investigatortoward the principal sources existing in the area of Health . id theAmish. It is by no means fully comprehensive, but the attempt hasbeen made to completely cover 1980 to the pre.sept.

During the compilation of this bibliography, five major areas ofexploration became evident and comprise the five major sections ofthis bibliography. These are: General Works (survey articleson Health Care and the Amish as well as excellent bactground on theAmish people and culture), Health Care Practices and Attitudes, Medi-cal Studies, Psychological Studies, and Population Studies.

Format was not w-.stricted, so this listing includes monographicworks, journal articles, Ph.D. dissertations, reports, papers presen-ted at symposia, government documents, and audio-vival materials.

INTRODUCTION

The Amish have attracted much curiosity, interest, and wonder -from outside tourists to genetic researchers. This has especiallybeen evident in the past two decades and ,.articularly in the areaof Health Care.

Joseph A. Hostetler, author of Amish Society, described theAmish as "...a church, a community, a spiritual union, a conserva-tive branch of Christianity, a religions a community whose memberspractice simple and austere living, a familistic entrepreneuringsystem, and an adaptive human community." (1) They have settledprimarily in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Yor1,and Ontario, Canada. According to Hostetler, they are the "directdescendants of the Anabaptists of sixteenth-century Europe...;"were named after their leader, Jacob Amman; are a bralo7.h of theSwiss brethren (one of three groups resulting from the Anabaptistnovement) (2); and came to America during two peak immigrationperiods, 1727-1770 and 1815-1860.
