Digipak Analysis 4 – U2

U2’s album covers have a strong link as they all use the colours red and black. This also links in with the magazine advert. The band are marketed as, and come across as quite serious about their music they don’t fit the cliché group. The band name is their logo. Two characters form a square and give the sense of strength, this is who we are and this is what we are about. It also creates a strong connection for the audience as wherever they see these two characters they will instantly remember the band.

U2’s first few album cover features the band as they take up the majority of the front cover (MCU) in order to establish the group.

The use of showing the band members in a line has been continually used in a few of their albums like this one which uses a medium shot. This continuity helps in defining them and helping audiences make a connection.

Red is a common theme on their album covers, just like the Red hot chili peppers. It symbolizes anger which could be linked to the album title ‘All because if you’.

As the band have grown and become more well known there isn’t a need to stand in a line on their album covers. As you can see on the album ‘The Joshua Tree’. However they have still kept some consistency despite being to the left side of the album cover.
