This year’s Annual Report provides an opportunity to pause and reflect on our progress over the past year, and to celebrate the many accomplishments Pearson College UWC and our students have gained.

One significant success was our annual fundraising effort, which raised more than $2.5 million this year, with over 1,400 donors from 53 countries rising to the challenge of supporting the 160 students at Pearson College UWC. It is impressive to note the increasing number of alumni who have made gifts this year – and they continue to support Pearson College UWC in many ways long after they have departed our campus.

Another milestone this year was the renewal of the membership of the organization’s governing bodies. With this step, we continue to move towards a greater focus on increased fundraising and the creation of a financially sustainable future for Pearson College UWC. I offer my sincere gratitude to the many individuals involved in this process, especially those who have been members of the Canadian Foundation Board and who will continue on as patrons of the College.

The Board of Trustees, through its leadership and fiduciary care, has steered the College towards continued success and a vibrant future. Pearson College UWC, like many charitable organizations, faces the challenges of operating in an environment of constant change and growing competition for philanthropic support. Providing strong governance and leadership in a complex and dynamic world is no small undertaking. I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Trustees of the Boards of Pearson College UWC and its Foundations (Canada and USA) for their dedication and hard work this year.

In closing, I wish to extend my immense gratitude to our partners, sponsors and every donor who made a contribution to us over the years . Your dedicated efforts continue to have a positive impact every single day, helping us to unite the world on the campus of Pearson College UWC.

As Pearson College UWC approaches our 40th anniversary, I am thrilled and inspired to see all the members of our community – donors, patrons, trustees, students, faculty, staff, alumni, host families – continue to challenge themselves to embody our mission. This annual report provides a moment to pause and reflect on these achievements, both at an individual level and as a community.

In this spirit of challenging one’s self that we share with the students, I was fortunate enough to spend part of this year on a 10,000-km bicycling trip. This four month trek took me across Canada and over the ocean to England, culminating in the 50th anniversary celebration of Pearson’s sister UWC, Atlantic College. During this trip, I had the opportunity to meet with alumni across two continents. This is one of the true joys of my job, and it is inspiring to see how the members of the Pearson community continue to further our mission once they have left the campus – leading UWC National Committees, mentoring students, founding new colleges and schools. Over the past year, nearly 4,000 alumni were engaged in their own transformational work, from leading families to leading change in organizations large and small all over the world.

Within the boundaries of the Pearson College UWC campus, great things have also been achieved. This year saw students from three countries join the College for the first time – countries that have never before sent students to us. Former Pearson College teacher Suzanne Tremblay volunteered her timeto recruit and select students from Suriname and Guyana. In addition, wealso welcomed our first student from Armenia.

Our talented faculty and alumni developed a comprehensive two-year“Theory of Knowledge + UWC Skills” course. This new course will enableevery one of our students to develop their skills and competencies, with the ultimate goal of having a powerful, positive impact in their own pursuit ofthe UWC mission.

As we have renewed our curriculum, we have also renewed our physical presence across our campus. This included, most notably, the renovation of the student rooms in Calgary House, incorporating state-of-the-art environmental technology. We have also continued to ensure that our campus has the greenest footprint possible, through measures such as the recent addition of native grasses and plants on campus.

All of these achievements – great and small, local and global – would not be possible without our supporters. I sincerely appreciate the contribution that each and every one of our donors has made this year. I remain humbled by your generosity and commitment to the vision of Pearson College UWC and the United World College movement.

Thank you.

Pearson College UWC Annual Report 2012-2013 [6]

“I have a 4-year-old daughter growing up in a world where the consequences of conflict and climate change will profoundly affect her life and that of billions. I wonder what kind of teacher she would want her father to be? I believe she would want me to awaken in my students a sense of responsibility and to afford them the skills to make change. This is why I feel so privileged to be part of the team at Pearson UWC. My work gives me real hope that united as a global community we will meet the immense challenges of our time.”

“I was having a serious discussion about

Syrian relief efforts with an impressive

Turkish counterpart and we began to chat

about our educational backgrounds. He

had attended a small international college

in New Mexico. Armand Hammer, I asked?

He answered “Why, yes!” When I told

him I had gone to Pearson, he responded

“ Well! This changes everything!” I knew

instantly we would skip several of the

usually protracted steps in diplomatic

trust-building.”

“The UWC experience has helped me think globally and I have learned that my identity is unique and something

I must be proud of – a concept that many youth in my country are not aware of. This growth and self-

awareness is made possible by those who invest in young people and make this opportunity a reality. I have found

an even greater identity through Pearson College, and I hope I will one day be able to be a part of those who

are rebuilding my country.”

AN ALUMNA“Pearson has been the opportunity

without which I could never have been on the path that I

have always dreamed of. Over the years, I have taken on many leadership responsibilities, which is very typical of Pearson alumni. In 2007, I was awarded $10,000 to implement the first Afghan

Youth Summer Camp for Peace. Later that year, I founded the 100

Mothers Literacy Program to teach young mothers how to read and write Dari in the most remote

areas of Afghanistan”.

INVESTING IN

CHANGEMAKERSJoyceJoyce has lived in Victoria for her entire life, in the same home her father built in 1930. Originally from England, her parents settled in Oak Bay when it was still surrounded by fields and farms. She is the definition of a “local” – but the impact of her generous gifts extends around the world.

The story of these gifts starts in the early 1970s, when Joyce first learned of the proposal to build Pearson College. She loved the idea of gathering young people from around the globe together – that each student could be a force for uniting people, nations and cultures. Since then, Joyce has maintained her strong interest in Pearson College, often bringing guests out to visit the campus to share her passion for the place.

Over the years, Joyce made regular donations to support the College. However, a few years ago Joyce believed the time was right to make a significant, long-term gift. She did not have any children so Joyce decided to provide a bequest of $500,000 directed to the Pearson College Foundation to create an endowment. The income will be used to provide scholarships for students with financial need, with a preference for students who come from single-parent families or students who do not have parents.

Why did she make this important gift? Joyce says that, “it’s worth investing in these young leaders. They give me hope for the future.”

Ken and Helen RotenbergOver the past 70 years, Ken Rotenberg has given many gifts to Pearson College. In fact, he was instrumental in the college’s creation, and has most recently given a transformational gift to carry the school into the future.

Ken has a long history with UWC, beginning in Britain’s World War II years. On leave from his post in London, he had a chance to spend time with Kurt Hahn, a founder of the UWC movement. Inspired by Hahn’s vision, Ken soon after supported the creation of Atlantic College in Wales, and chaired the original Canadian National Committee. When the opportunity arose to develop a school in Canada, he jumped at the chance. Alongside Lord Mountbatten and others, Ken helped to lay Pearson’s cornerstone.

Over the decades, Ken and Helen have continued to support Pearson. As Ken says, he admires the “high intellectual level of the students and their sense of service. “ This admiration, combined with a lifelong friendship with Kurt Hahn’s niece, Cornelia Oberlander, led to his most recent and significant gift: a pledge of $500,000 to help renovate Calgary House, a leadership gift which is a testament to Ken and Helen‘s passion and commitment.

Mary McDonaldMoney was sometimes scarce for Ian and Mary McDonald, but helping others was always important to them. Ian was in the lumber business, and some years it was hard to make ends meet. But when they could, the couple was charitable. One of their favourite causes was Pearson College, which they also helped by volunteering as a “host family”. Mary recalls the lively and engaging students who spent weekends at their Qualicum Beach home.

When her husband passed away a few years ago, Mary created a unique legacy by establishing two full scholarships in his name, valued at $80,000 each. Mary and her daughter Janice dedicated the scholarships to assisting girls in need, specifically from countries in conflict. This year, it went to young women from Burundi and Malawi. Mary and Janice believe that educating girls is a powerful way to change entire communities. As Mary says, “Pearson College is a wonderful opportunity for any young person. I want to make sure that girls from disadvantaged backgrounds have a chance to attend the College.” Through her gift, her husband’s memory lives on as it helps youth from around the world expand their horizons.

WAYS OF

GIVINGThanks to you, promising young students from around the globe experience a transformational experience at Pearson College UWC and become change agents and leaders in their families, communities and society.

Pearson College UWC depends on philanthropy to fulfil its mission – whether in the form of annual gifts, endowment funds or future gifts such as bequests. All of these donations can also provide generous tax benefits to donors in Canada and to our supporters in the United States through the Pearson College of the Pacific US Foundation. Tax benefits for donors in the United Kingdom are also available.

Annual and Monthly Gifts You may support Pearson College UWC students by sending a cheque by mail or by donating with a credit card over the phone or through the College’s secure website at www.pearsoncollege.ca/give.

More and more supporters are choosing to set up automatic monthly donations using a credit card. This popular choice spreads donations throughout the year to provide stable support for Pearson College students. For many donors, it is a more efficient way to give a large gift.

Further tax-smart ways for Canadians to support Pearson College students and also assist in their financial, retirement and estate planning are described below.

Gift in a Will – Bequest This is a simple and easy way to support Pearson students in the future. A specific dollar amount or portion of one’s estate may be donated. A charitable tax receipt will result in tax savings for your estate.

Gifts of Canadian RRSP and RRIF Funds This alternative allows you to easily designate all or a percentage of RRSP and RRIF funds as a future gift to the College without having to pass through your estate or requiring a revision to your will. A charitable tax receipt is issued for the proceeds received.

Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities This is a great way to transfer a gift of appreciated publicly traded securities such as stock, mutual funds or bonds to make a larger charitable gift at a lower cost to you. By directly donating publicly traded securities to Pearson College, donors eliminate capital gains tax on donated securities and receive a charitable receipt for the full appreciated market value of their gift.

A Gift of Life Insurance This is an excellent gift for donors who wish to leave a substantial future gift to the College through relatively modest premium payments. Tax savings can be applied to current income or to your estate.
