THANK YOU!

One of the things that I appreciate about Whitely is our desire and ability to join forces for the greater good. When I was young growing up in Whitely I lived on the East side of Gavin Street. Gavin was the dividing line between “Whitely” and “Austin Heights”. Even though our area had another name, I always considered myself a resident of Whitely. Whitely is one of the
largest neighborhoods in the City and has strategically been divided into seven areas. In the 1920s Herbert and Charles Austin operated a Dairy Farm in the area I lived in known as “Austin Heights”, but as neighborhoods began to form and develop Austin Heights along with the area known as Creston were assimilated into what is now the Whitely area. These two areas are now identified as Area 1 (Creston - Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. to N. Elgin St and E. McGalliard to E. Streeter) and Area 7 (Austin Heights to E. Gavin, to E. Hodson to N. Manor).
Whitely’s strength and achievements have not been due to the accomplishments of any one Area, but all 7 Areas working together as one neighborhood. I look at the City of Muncie the same way. If we are going to grow and excel as a City it will not be because of the accomplishments of any one neighborhood or group, but because we came together as a Community to improve the Quality of Life and Quality of Place in our City. (One Muncie!)

Whitely and Teen Works team up to add beauty and color to our park
In the month of June, the Whitely Community Council teamed up with Michael Harris and TeenWorks to continue our beautification of the Whitely Community and the local park, with help from the Muncie Parks Department. Together we worked hard to complete important projects in McCulloch Park: painting the riverside view of the baseball
diamond fence, planting flower gardens, making the park entrance signs more attractive, installing and painting new posts to mark the parking spaces for drivers and visitors, and brightening up the landscape with paint on various rocks. Ken Hudson, Frank Scott, and Curtis Rogers from The Whitely Community Council worked alongside Cameron, Essence, Donshala, and (continued on next page)

MITS to Hold Public Hearings MITS will be holding a public hearing that will be held on Thursday, July 13 at 8:30am at the bus training and meeting facility at 1400 E Seymour. It is important that Muncie citizens affected by the bus routes and the Marsh closings have a voice. The public is welcome and it would be won-derful to have our concerns heard. Item #3 on the agenda invites the public to speak about the social, environmental and economic impact the changes will have.
Please consider attending the meeting to make your voice heard. MITS cannot meet public needs unless the public tells them what those needs are. Together we can make a difference.
