InstallShield Tuner 6.0 for Adobe Acrobat

User Document

1 Product NameInstallShield Tuner 6.0 for Adobe® Acrobat®

2 Document OverviewThis document assists Information Technology (IT) managers in customizing the Adobe Acrobat 6.0 product installer and the look and feel of Acrobat prior to deployment. It describes how to prepare your machine for installing Tuner, how to install Tuner, and how to use Tuner to customize your Acrobat installer. The Adobe Acrobat 6.0 products covered include Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard, Adobe Acrobat Elements 6.0, and Adobe Reader® 6.0. To use Tuner, you should be familiar with installing applications on your system as well as the installation and deployment strategies used.

Note: Tuner only functions with Acrobat 6.0 products. Adobe has a similar tool available for Acrobat 5.x products called the Acrobat Enterprise Installation Tool (AEIT) 1.x. The Acrobat 5.x products include Adobe Acrobat 5.x, Adobe Acrobat Elements 1.x, and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0. For more information on AEIT, go to www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/deployment.html.

3 ReferencesBoth the InstallShield Tuner Help Library and the Windows® Installer (MSI) v2.0 Help Library are included with this application as supplemental references. Because Tuner has been customized specifically for Adobe Acrobat 6.0 products, some features discussed in these supplemental pieces may not apply to this customized version.

4. 1. Features

With Tuner, you can:

• Turn off auto-update and online registration, so users cannot independently update or register the application.

• Specify a silent install, including pre-specifying the company name and serial number.

• Customize Distiller® prior to installing, including adding and setting job options files.

• Turn the Custom Setup option in the installer on or off.

• Remove shortcuts from the Desktop and Start menu.

• Lock settings, so they cannot be altered by users.

4. 2. Tested Tuner Environments

Adobe has tested Tuner on Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 2 and above) and Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 1). Adobe has also tested that the output of Tuner is correctly recorded when Acrobat is installed on any of the supported Acrobat 6.0 Windows operating systems. (See “Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Products System Require-ments” on page 2.)

The Tuner user interface is in English. However, Adobe has tested the operation of Tuner in the following localized environments: English, French, German, and Japanese. Adobe has tested customizing a localized version of the appli-cation (for example, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional Japanese) on a localized system (for example, Windows XP Professional Japanese), then installed that application with modifications on a localized system (for example, Windows 2000 Professional Japanese).

4. 3. Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Products System Requirements

You can find the system requirements for Acrobat 6.0 products at the following locations:

Acrobat 6.0 Professional

www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/systemreqs.html

Acrobat 6.0 Standard

www.adobe.com/products/acrobatstd/systemreqs.html

Acrobat Elements 6.0

www.adobe.com/products/acrobatel/systemreqs.html

Adobe Reader 6.0

www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrsystemreqs.html

5 Installing TunerYou should install both Tuner and an Acrobat 6.0 product’s Install Directory onto one computer. The Install Directory, which is on the CD, contains all the installation files, including the Windows Installer (MSI), the Index Wizard Editor (ITW), and setup.exe. Tuner will ask you to browse to these files.

3 INSTALLSHIELD TUNER 6.0 FOR ADOBE ACROBATUser Document

User Document

To install Tuner:

1 Download Tuner. It is available free from Adobe at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/deployment.html.

2 Copy the Acrobat 6.0 application’s Install Directory from the product CD onto the system where Tuner is installed. For example, some possible US English CD Install Directory paths include:

• D:\Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional

• D:\Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard

• D:\Adobe\Acrobat6.0\Acrobat Elements

• D:\Adobe Reader 6.0\Installer (found on all Acrobat 6.0 product CDs)

Note: If you plan on setting Acrobat Security preferences with Tuner, the Acrobat 6.0 product and Tuner must be installed on the same system. Make the security setting changes in Acrobat before setting the preferences in Tuner. (See “Application Configuration” on page 8.)

3 Unzip the Tuner download and launch the executable to start the InstallShield Wizard.

4 Click Next.

5 For the destination folder, accept the default or click Change to select a different location. Then click Next.

6 In the Ready to Install the Program dialog box, click Install.

7 In the Wizard Complete dialog box, click Finish.

The Adobe Reader 6.0 Installer comes as both a CD install and a Web install. The CD Installer is provided on all Acrobat 6.0 product CDs. The Web Installer is available at Adobe.com. It is a single installer that unpacks itself into the Windows Cache during the installation of Reader. For Tuner, it is recommended that you use the Adobe Reader 6.0 CD Installer, because this is the version that Adobe tested. However, you can convert the Web Installer to a CD Installer.

To convert a Web install into a CD install:

1 Download the appropriate Adobe Reader 6.0 from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html to the same system on which you loaded Tuner.

2 Launch the Web Installer. The Netopsystems Fast Electronic Application Distribution (FEAD) Optimizer notifies you that it is recomposing data.

3 When the FEAD finishes recomposing, the Welcome to the Setup Wizard for Adobe Reader 6.0 appears. Do not click Next.

4 Navigate to the Adobe Reader 6.0 install directory located in the Windows Cache (%Windows%\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0\XXXBIG): %system root%\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0\XXXBIG. The XXX should be replaced with the appropriate three-letter language abbreviation (ENU = English, FRA = French, DEU = German, and JPN = Japanese).

5 Copy the entire contents of this directory into a new desktop directory named, for example, “Adobe Reader 6.0.”

6 Using the Tuner InterfaceTuner has three views that you can use together or separately. The right pane always displays dialog boxes or help information related to the item selected in the left pane.

Left pane Lists the items that you can select to display in the right pane. When Tuner is first launched, the left pane displays options for creating a new transform or selecting an existing transform. Once an MST file is created, you can show or hide the Check List and View Bar using the menu and toolbar options.

Right pane Displays the dialog where you select the customization settings for the items listed in the left pane.

Check List Shows the steps to take to customize your installer.

View Bar Shows the main steps of the check list.

Output window Shows a log of events as they occur during transform and package creation. You can hide the Output window using the View menu or the Hide Docked Window button in the upper left corner.

7 Initiating a ProjectDuring a project, you select which Windows Installer (MSI) package file to use and create a Microsoft Transform (MST) file to be customized. The MST file can have the same name and reside in the same location as the MSI file, or you can give it a different name and place it in another location.

To initiate a project:

1 Choose Start > Programs > InstallShield Tuner 6.0 for Adobe Acrobat.

2 In the Open dialog box, select the Install Directory of the Acrobat 6.0 product you want to customize. Select the Tuner preference file (.itw), and click Open.

5 INSTALLSHIELD TUNER 6.0 FOR ADOBE ACROBATUser Document

User Document

3 The InstallShield Tuner 6.0 for Adobe Acrobat Welcome pane displays by default. You can define which pane displays at startup under Open a Recent Transform.

]

To create a new transform:

1 Click Create a New Transform in the left pane.

2 In the Base Windows Installer Package box in the right pane, type the path to the Windows Installer (MSI) package file you want to customize, or click Browse to locate the file.

3 If you are using multiple transforms for this project, use the Provide a List of Additional Transforms to be Applied section. Click the New button and type the path, or click the Browse button to open the Select Additional Transforms dialog box. Use the up and down arrow buttons to arrange the transforms in the order in which they should be applied.

Note: If you choose to use multiple transforms, note that the order in which the transforms are applied is important. For example, if Transform #1 creates a value for a property and Transform #2 modifies that value, applying Transform #2 before Transform #1 may result in an error regarding the setting of this value.

4 In the Windows Installer Transforms box, do one of the following:

• Accept the default name and location for the new project. The default uses the same location and name as the base installer file with an MST extension.

• Click Browse to select the location you want to use. Name the file with an MST extension, and click Save.

5 When you select Response Transform, Tuner takes you through each step of the Installation Wizard. Your selec-tions are recorded and run as the auto-install.

Note: Occasionally, recording modifications in a transform file results in errors when that recording is played back on a client machine that differs from the machine hosting Tuner. For this reason, Adobe recommends that you set the Response Transform preferences elsewhere in Tuner. For example, Product Properties under Organization: Properties, Custom Setup under Organization: Features, and Command Line Edits under Package: Setup. For details, see “Customizing a Project” on page 7.

6 INSTALLSHIELD TUNER 6.0 FOR ADOBE ACROBATUser Document

User Document

6 Click Create to start the new customization project. For details, see “Customizing a Project” on page 7.

7 Save the new transform file before exiting Tuner to retain your customization.

7. 1. Opening a Transform

You can display a list of project (MST) files that you have created by selecting the Recent Transform option. To display transforms that have been created by other users, use the Existing Transforms option.

To open a recent transform:

1 Click Open a Recent Transform in the left pane.

2 Select a project.

3 The Properties button displays details about the selected customization project, including file locations, size, dates, and related transforms.

4 Select the options at the bottom of the pane to set Tuner behavior at startup.

5 Click Open to work on the selected project.

Existing transforms are generally those not created by you or those residing on another machine. When opening existing transforms, you need to indicate the Base Windows Installer Package (MSI) and the transform file (MST).

To open an existing transform:

1 Click Open an Existing Transform in the left pane.

2 Type the name of the Base Windows Installer Package (MSI) file or click Browse to locate the file.

3 Type the name of the transform file (MST) or click Browse to locate the file.

4 Click Open to work on the project.

7. 2. Tuning Acrobat Elements 6.0

Tuning Elements is a slightly different process than for other Acrobat 6.0 products. Acrobat Elements 6.0 is composed of two MSI installer packages. Elements 6.0.msi installs Portable Document Format (PDF) creation capability, and Adobe Reader 6.0.msi installs Adobe Reader, which allows for PDF viewing. If your installation customization only requires changes to PDF creation (for example, changing the default PDF creation job options settings), you can tune Elements like the other Acrobat installers (see “Initiating a Project” on page 4). If your installation customization requires changes to Adobe Reader (for example, disabling Reader’s auto-update preference), Adobe recommends the following steps.

To customize Acrobat Elements:

1 Copy the Reader Installation Directory from the Elements CD onto the system with Tuner.

2 Tune Reader. See “Initiating a Project” on page 4.

3 Deploy Reader.

Note: If Adobe Reader 6.0 is already installed on the user’s system, the Elements Installer will not reinstall it.

4 To customize the Elements Installer, copy the Elements Installation Directory from the Elements CD onto the system with Tuner and tune Elements.

5 Deploy Elements.

8 Customizing a ProjectAfter creating a project, the left pane displays the Check List. To customize a project, you work through the steps of the Check List, save the new transform, and then create a package before the transform is ready for deployment. When you click on a Check List item, the right pane displays additional information about the item and the selec-tions for customization. Some items also display help instructions in the lower portion of the pane, such as infor-mation on choices and menu options.

8. 1. Organization

Organization specifies default properties and configures features in the Windows Installer package.

Properties For setting the destination directory, the company name, the user name, and the application serial number.

Note: If you want to deploy the installer in silent mode, the serial number must be entered on this pane.

Features The information is identical to the Custom Install function for the Acrobat 6.0 product installer you are customizing. The initial state for all the items listed is consistent with the settings of the Typical install.

8. 2. System Configuration

System Configuration sets up the target systems with files and shortcuts required by your application.

Files and Folders For adding or removing files or folders from the installation. Drag the item you want to add from the Source computer’s directory tree to the Destination computer’s folders. To remove an item, right-click on the item and select Remove.

Note: Removing a file only deletes the data table entry so that the item is not installed. The .cab file remains unchanged. Adding files creates additional .cab files.

Shortcuts By default, Adobe shortcuts are added to the Desktop and the Start menu. To remove these shortcuts, select the appropriate option.

8 INSTALLSHIELD TUNER 6.0 FOR ADOBE ACROBATUser Document

User Document

8. 3. Application Configuration

Application Configuration predefines settings and user information, and can sublaunch other applications as part of your Acrobat deployment.

Preferences For modifying and locking certain preferences of the Acrobat user interface so that they cannot be changed once the application is installed. These settings are the same selections available within Distiller and Acrobat. For more information on these settings, see the Help systems in the Acrobat 6.0 products and Distiller 6.0.

• Distiller: Both default and custom job options file names appear in the Adobe PDF Settings Files list. Add and remove job options files, so the list contains the files you want available after installation. The Select Default Adobe PDF Settings File drop-down menu lets you select which file to use as the default after installation.

• Adobe PDF Printer: For setting printer output and behavior, including the default PDF output folder, the default level of security for each job, font and PostScript® options, viewing options, and replacing the PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file.

• Security: For setting preferences for Security and Digital Signatures. To set certain security preferences, you must have Acrobat 6.0 and Tuner installed on the same machine. Before using this tab, you must open Acrobat 6.0 and set the security options by selecting Edit > Preferences > Digital Signature. After setting the options, exit Acrobat. Then in Tuner, you can use the Set button to import your Acrobat 6.0 settings. You can also set up Identity Search Directories and Trusted Identities in the same way by first making the changes in Acrobat under Advanced > Manage Digital IDs. The Reset Settings button restores the values in Security Settings to None.

• Update: Enables you to disable all auto-update and online registration options in Acrobat 6.0. These menu selec-tions and options will be dimmed.

• Comments and Forms: For designating a specific server location and settings for an online comments repository as well as the level of control available to users for the forms auto-complete feature.

Launch Other Applications Enables you to launch EXE and BAT files, set command-line parameters, and specify on which Windows operating systems the install will launch. Items are launched in the order listed, so it is important to ensure that one action does not overwrite another, unless you specifically intend this behavior.

8. 4. Preparing Packages for Distribution

In the Package pane, you can set up one of the package options to create and distribute the customized install. There are three packaging options available. You can also use the Packaging Wizard. See “Packaging Wizard” on page 9.

Location To deploy your install package via a network server or FTP site, specify the network path or FTP site here.

Note: To create a new folder when specifying the network location, you must type it manually. The folder will be created during packaging.

Setup You can package the transform file and the Windows Installer in a single setup.exe executable. This is the method recommended for installing locally. Deploying a setup package via a third-party software deployment tool requires you to set command-line arguments.

SMS Use to designate the version of Microsoft SMS and the relevant MIF information. Adobe has fully tested SMS version 2.0 and higher for use with Tuner.

To deploy a setup package with a third-party software deployment tool:

Instead of using the Setup option, it is recommended that you use either msiexec.exe or setup.exe and use the transform command-line switches to apply the transform files. For example:

• setup.exe /v“TRANSFORMS=%SOURCEDIR%transform1.mst;%SOURCEDIR%transforms2.mst”, where %SOURCEDIR% is the full path to the transform files.

9 INSTALLSHIELD TUNER 6.0 FOR ADOBE ACROBATUser Document

User Document

• msiexec.exe “TRANSFORMS=%SOURCEDIR%transform1.mst;%SOURCEDIR%transform2.mst”

Note: You may want to use double-quotes if the path name or the transform file has a space in the name.

8. 5. Additional Tools

Server Location Enables you to specify additional server locations for the Windows Installer package for Acrobat 6.0 products, including Elements, Professional, and Standard. You may want a copy of the installer on a server in the event a user needs to run a detect-and-repair process. Since the installer is not cached on the local machine, Acrobat would look for it in the specified server location.

Additional server locations are not necessary for Adobe Reader 6.0, because the installer is cached on the local drive under %WINDOWS%\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0\xxxyyy, where xxx is the language code, and yyy is either BIG (ReaderBig) or MIN (ReaderMin).

9 Packaging a ProjectTuner collects the files for your package distribution over a network location or FTP server, creates a setup.exe file with command-line arguments, or configures distribution with Microsoft Systems Management Server. You can do this with the Package Check List item, or with the Package Wizard.

Note: If the Package and Packaging Wizard menu options are dimmed, make sure that you saved the MST file. These options are not available until the MST file is saved. To save the MST file, select Edit > Save.

To create a package:

1 Set the options in the Package Check List item.

2 Choose Project > Package. Tuner automatically creates a package of the items you selected in the Check List. The Output window opens to the Package tab, and a log of the Package creation process displays.

9. 1. Packaging Wizard

Once you have created your transform file, you can select the Packaging Wizard from the Project menu to complete the package setup. The Packaging Wizard displays three separate dialogs that correlate to those in the Package pane. You select the packaging options that you want and provide the necessary information for the options, and the Wizard completes the process.

9. 2. Test

Test runs the Install Wizard in Test mode. This allows you to test your custom installation without actually installing it.

To test your customized install:

1 Choose Project > Run.

2 Select the Test option. The Output window opens and displays a log of the process, indicating success or failure and any pertinent error messages.

9. 3. Run

Run installs the Windows Installer package and your custom transform.

10 INSTALLSHIELD TUNER 6.0 FOR ADOBE ACROBATUser Document

User Document

To run your customized installation:

1 Choose Project > Run.

2 Select the Run option. The Output window opens and displays a log of the process, indicating success or failure and any pertinent error messages.

10 Silent InstallThe Installer can run in silent mode with the /qn command-line switch. You can set this command line in the Package Setup pane in the Windows Installer Command Line Arguments field. The /qn switch can also be set outside of Tuner by specifying /qn as your command-line argument when executing msiexec.exe or by specifying /v“qn” when executing setup.exe.

For either option, specify the serial number within the Properties pane (see “Organization” on page 7). A silent install will fail if the serial number has not been specified. (This step is not required when tuning Adobe Reader, because Reader does not require a serial number.)

Note: If you are executing setup.exe, you may want to add an additional “/s” switch to suppress the initial install dialog. For example: setup.exe /s /v“/qn”.

11 Deploying a ProjectFor more information on Adobe’s support of Acrobat with software deployment tools, please see www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/deployment.html.

12 Troubleshooting Tips• Do not try to use an MSI file when it is still on the CD. Copy it to your hard drive first.

• After opening an ITW file for a specific Acrobat product, you can only open MSI and MST files for that specific Acrobat product. If you want to work with MSI or MST files of a different product, you must open the ITW for that product first.

• If you are executing msiexec.exe, make sure that your specify TRANSFORMS=“UNC path to the Transform file”. If you are applying more than one transform file, you must separate the transform file paths with semi-colons. For example: msiexec.exe /i Acrobatinstallerpackage.msi TRANSFORMS=“c:\\ProgramFiles\MyTransform1.mst; c:\\Program Files\My Transform2.mst”.

• If you are executing setup.exe, the Package > Setup option automatically captures the correct transform file. The package does not capture the whole path to the transform and assumes you are running the installer locally.
