POPULATION OF ·INDIANA: APRIL 1, 1950

(This is one of a series o~ reports presenting final populat~on figur~s for selected areas in each State. In this series, reports are numbered alphabeti~ally by States. Additional reports will be issued .as final figures for other States become available)

The total population of Indiana on April 1, 1950, was 3,934,224, according to final figures for the State released today by Roy V. Peel, Director., Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce, During ·the previous 10 years, the population of the State increased by 506,428, or 14.8 percent, over the 3,427,796 inhabitants enumerated in 1940. Among the States, Indiana ranked twelfth in populatio~. The 1950 popula~ tion was almost 27 times as large as its popula-tion in 1820 when it was first enumerated as a State.

According to the new .urban definition, Indiana had 2,357,196 persons living in urban territory and·l,577,028 persons in rural terri-tory. The urban pop~lation amounted to 59.9 percent of the total population of the State.

Between 1940 and 1950, 74 of the 92 coun-ties in Indiana gained population and 18 lost population. .Almost one~halt ot the population . .,~ increase in the Stat.~ was accounted for by Mari~n, Lake, St. Joseph, and Vanderburgh Coun-ties) four ·of the most populous counties in the State. Clark experienced the greatest rate of increase, .55.e· percent. · The counties of Indiana ranged· in size from Ohio with a population of 4,223 to Marion wit.h a. population of 551, 777.

In 1950 Indiana had a total of 537 incorpo-rated places and ia uninoorpo.rated plaoes of · 1,000 inhabitant's or xn.ore. .~he incorporated .Places ranged in ·size from Shores Acres town with a ... :gopulation of 9 to. Indianapolis. city with a population ot 427,173· There were 2,5}4,710 per-sons living in.the incorporated places, 317,242 ot whom were in the 421 places .of fewer than 2,500 inhabitants. Of the 24,979 pe~sons in 'the·

unincorporated places, 14,216 were living in the 9 places of 1,000 to 2,500 inhabitants.

Under the urban definition establis4ed for use in the 1950 Census, the urban. population comprises all persons living in (a) places ot 2,500 inhabitants ormore incorporated as cities, boroughs, towns,1 and villages; {b) the densely settled urban fringe, including both incorpo-rated areas, around cities of 50,000 cir mer.~; and (o) unincorporated places ot 2,500 inhabit-ants or more outside any urban fringe. The re-maining population is classified as rural. Ac-cording to the urban definition used in previous censuses, the urban population comprised ·all persons living in incorporated places of 2,500 inhabitants or more a·nd areas {usually minor civil divisions) classified as urban under spe-cial rules relating to population size and density.

In both definitions, the most important component of the urban territo:::-y is the gro~ of incorporated places -having 2,500 inhabitants or more. A definition of urban ter=itory restricted to such places, however, would exclude a number of eq_ually large "and densely' settled places, m~rely be.cause· tney wei:e not incorporated places. Under-the old definition, an effort was made·to avoid some ot the niore obvious omissions by the inclusron of the places urban under special rules. Even with these ~ules, ·however,· many large and closely built-up places were exclu~ed from the u~ban territory •. To improve the situa-tion in the 1950 Census, the Bureau of· the Census

set up, in advance of enumeration, boundaries tor urban-fringe areas around cities of 50 1 000 or more and for ~ninoorporated places outside urban fringes. All the population residing in u.:rba11-fringe areas and in uninc,orp1;,rated places of 2 ,500 or more is classified a.a urban aooording to the 1950 def ini ti on. (Of C,ourse, the inc or-. porated places ot 2,500 or more are urban in their own right.) Consequently, thespecial rules of the old dafinition'are no longer necessary. ·

According to the new urban definition, the 1950 urban population of Indiana included the following components: (1) The 2,21?,468 inhab-itants or the 116 incorporated places of 2,500

or more; (2) the 10,763 inhabitants of the 3 specially delineated unincorporated places of 2, 500 or more; and (3) the 126, 965 persons liv-ing :!.n other territory included in the urban-fringe areas of Evansville, Terre Haute, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and in the Indiana, parts ot the urban-f~inge areas of Chicago, Ill.; Louis· ville, Ky. ; and south Bend, Ind. Since there were no places urban under special rule in Indiana according ·to the old. d.ef'ini tion, the pop-ulation of the first element comprised the urban population under the old definition. The popu-lation of the remaining elements--139, 728--repre-sents the gain in the urban population ot Indiana which resulted from the change in definition.
