UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH CRESTThe University of Guelph Crest was designed by Eric Arthur and John Hall of theUniversity of Toronto School of Architecture. The three components of the design— the crest, shield and motto — represent the University’s links with the City ofGuelph and the University of Toronto (the degree-granting body for Guelph’sfounding colleges before the University of Guelph was incorporated in 1964).The white stallion in the crest links U of G with the House of Hanover’s coat ofarms. The name “Guelph” comes from “Welfen,” the family name of the House ofHanover, which intermarried with the English royal line. The three-part shieldcombines a book (symbolizing learning, the liberal arts and the University ofToronto connection), an astrolabe (symbolizing science) and a cornucopia (asymbol for abundance and agriculture). The crest and shield are used with or without the University of Guelph mottorerum cognoscere causas, a quote from Virgil which means “to learn themeaning of reality.”
TTHE UNIVERSITY MACECreated by Guelph artisan Harold Muller and presented to the University by the citizens of Guelph, the mace is carried in theacademic procession by the Beadle. It is topped by the silver crown of Queen Victoria (reigning monarch when two of thefounding colleges were established) and decorated with native Canadian stones. Below the crown are the insignia of QueenElizabeth II and the founding colleges and four plaques bearing the coats of arms of Canada, Ontario, the City of Guelph, andthe University. The crown is mounted on pine from Massey Library and supported by metal forged from an old Ontario farmimplement. Sixteen symbols on the shank represent the arts, sciences and various college activities.

ACADEMIC REGALIAThe wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has continuedsince the Middle Ages, when the first Universities were founded. The regalia vary slightly from one University to another, and withina University, according to the status of the wearer. At the Universityof Guelph, the Undergraduate’s and Master’s gowns are black,Doctorate gowns are blue. The colours for the degrees are as follows:Bachelor of Applied Science – blueBachelor of Arts – whiteBachelor of Arts and Science – narrow white and goldBachelor of Bio-Resource Management – red and goldBachelor of Commerce – taupeBachelor of Computing – dark blueBachelor of Engineering – dark greenBachelor of Landscape Architecture – orangeBachelor of Science – goldBachelor of Science in Agriculture – yellowBachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences – purpleBachelor of Science in Technology – narrow blue and goldDoctor of Veterinary Medicine – brownMaster of Applied Nutrition – pale gold/pale greenMaster of Applied Science –gold/greenMaster of Arts – whiteMaster of Arts (Leadership) – white Master of Bioinformatics – gold/redMaster of Business Administration – grey/silverMaster of Engineering – greenMaster of Environmental Sciences – purpleMaster of Fine Arts – red and whiteMaster of Landscape Architecture – orangeMaster of Planning – dark greenMaster of Public Health – blueMaster of Science – goldMaster of Science (Planning) – gold Doctor of Philosophy – gold with blue cordDoctor of Veterinary Science – gold with gold cordThe Bachelor’s hood is edged with the distinctive colour. TheMaster’s hood is the same as the Bachelor’s except that itfeatures a double edge.
CONFERRING THE DEGREE / GRANTING THE DIPLOMA
The dignified ceremonials used for conferringdegrees have evolved from rituals used in the 12th
and 13th century church. Early students wereusually clerks in holy orders, monks or priests whowore a habit or cloak with a cowl or hood. Modernacademic costume has its roots in the colourfulrobes introduced by Oxford and Cambridge 600years ago.The Convocation ceremony is also an ancienttradition. The ceremony begins with the arrival ofthe mace, symbol of the University, and theChancellor, our Senior Executive Officer. TheChancellor confers the degree or grants thediploma while the Beadle places the hood over therecipient’s shoulders. At the University of Guelph, the Beadle – another link between the Universityand its clerical roots – is the Secretary of Senate. The presentation of the parchment is the final actof the ceremony.

TTHE GRYPHON STATUEVisitors arriving at the main entranceway to the University of Guelph campus are greeted by a giant bronzedGryphon statue unveiled in June 2014 as part of Guelph’s 50th anniversary celebrations and Alumni Weekend. The $300,000 project was funded entirely by donations, primarily from alumni and student groups. It wasdesigned by FASTWÜRMS, faculty members, Kim Kozzi and Dai Skuse, and two graduates of the School ofFine Art and Music (SOFAM), Nicole Vogelzang and Dustin Wilson.
A gryphon — the namesake of U of G sports teams — is a mythical creature with the head, talons and wings ofan eagle and the body of a lion. FASTWÜRMS tried to design a creature that would convey the complexity ofthe University, said Skuse. “The Gryphon is a strange hybrid creature, like mathematics and literature, logic andnonsense, academia and popular culture, eagle and lion,” he said.“Our welcome message would be: expect the unexpected. At the University of Guelph, education is atransformative experience.”
