Learn about It!
The fast evolvement of healthcare products leads to advancement and improvement in the quality of life. These can easily be accessed as there are fast productions of them and are highly commercialized. Before these advancements, there exist the traditional medicines and practices that ancient people used and remain as other options in healthcare. Complementary and alternative healthcare modalities can be categorized into four major domains - biologically-based, energy medicine, manipulative and body-based, and mind-body medicine. They differ in nature or form. Biologically-based are the old-age herbals coming from medicinal plants traditionally prepared. They are the medicines that use any part of the plant. Energy medicines are ancient medical methods of unleashing the energy in the body for the betterment of the health. Manipulative and body-based practices are the kinesthetic approaches that involve the treatment of a locomotive aspect of health while mind-body medicinal practices involve the mental power to permit the central control in the improvement of holistic health. In this lesson, some forms of complementary and alternative healthcare modalities such as herbal medicines, acupuncture, and naturopathy are examined in detail.

Naturopathy Naturopathy is the medicinal practices employing nature-based cures for healthcare. It promotes holistic health by evaluating the specific aspect of the being that will help for the natural and non-toxic treatment to work on in restoring the holistic well-being of the individual. It engages other traditional medicines like the use of herbal medicine, acupuncture, Ventosa massage cupping, therapy, and reflexology. Naturopathic medicine has emerged from these traditional practices. It works in several principles as listed below:
1. Its methods are tied to the belief that nature has its healing power. The belief states that nature such as the human body has the inherent ability to heal itself in its own terms naturally. It facilitates the removal of hindrances that forbids the natural healing to occur.
2. It also works on the principle that the cause must be identified and cured. 3. It employs a non-invasive and gentle approach to the healing process.
Effective naturopathic treatment needs patience and open communication between the patient and the practitioner. It allows the proper identification of the real cause of any disease. Also, treatments are fitting to the actual needs of the individual.

Below are some of the herbal medicines approved by the Department of Health (DOH). Table 1. Some Herbal Medicines approved by Department of Health (DOH).

Acupuncture Acupuncture is an energy-based medicine procedure using long needles inserted at particular body points to affect the energy flow in the body. It is a treatment that originated in Chinese traditional medicines and also targets certain points of the body to manipulate the Qi flow. Qi flow is the movement of energy in the pathways of the body. These pathways are the meridians between the body points that also lead to the internal organs. Thus, it is believed to relieve the symptoms of a health concern as the Qi flow is improved. It is sometimes spelled as “chi.” There are many studies conducted to prove its effectivity. In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a list of health concerns proven to be effectively treated with acupuncture.
● regulation of blood pressure; ● chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting; ● peptic ulcer, a gastric condition; ● menstrual syndrome; ● dysentery, intestinal inflammation; ● allergic rhinitis; ● facial muscle pain; ● morning sickness; ● rheumatoid arthritis, swelling pain, and inflammation around the joints; ● sprains; ● tennis elbow, inflammation in the joint of the arm; ● sciatica, irritation in the sciatic nerve in the lower back; ● dental pain; ● reducing risks of stroke; and ● inducing labor.

An ancient technique originated in China involving the placing of cups on your back for a few minutes to create a suction. The suction helps to relieve muscle pain, regulate blood flow, and eliminate inflammation. The cups can be glasses, bamboo, earthenware, or silicone. Inside the cups, a flamed substance such as alcohol, herbs, or paper is placed inside. When the fire extinguishes, the cups are then settled on the back of the patient. It creates suction as the air inside the cup cools down, it generates a vacuum. It then results in the swelling and reddening of the skin, allowing the blood vessels to expand. There are two types of Ventosa massage cupping - dry and wet. Dry cupping therapy is the same as explained aforementioned. On the other hand, Wet cupping therapy involves the slight cutting on the skin after the 3-minute mild suction. After which, the cups are placed on top of the light cuts for the second suction. Here releases a small amount of blood. It is believed that this technique removes the toxins in the body, but no scientific studies have proven this claim yet.

Therapy Therapy is the natural way of a healing process. It usually focuses on the mental wellness of the being. These are practices like acupuncture, reflexology, Ventosa massage cupping, and other forms of traditional medicinal methods. The therapy that can be employed depends on the health dimension it needs to cure.
● In most cases, psychotherapy is the most common therapy that focuses on the mental health of the individual. These are a set of procedures and treatments that target the mental empowering of the patient.
● There is also the physical therapy, which concentrates on the physical improvement of the person particularly to those who suffered from a stroke and kinesthetic-related health conditions.
● Nutritional therapy is another dimension that aims to cure health conditions through a well-planned diet.
● On the other hand, behavioral therapy focuses on the attitude formation of an individual. There are many forms of therapy; all of them are an individual-based approach - the therapy depends on the needs of the person.

Reflexology
Fig. 8. Reflexology chart.
Reflexology is the application of proper pressure on certain points in the foot, hands, or ears. As shown above, the practitioners on this technique believe that each point in the foot has corresponding internal organ connected to it and that employing proper pressure will help cure the health condition concerned with the specified internal organ. This technique uses a guide just like as shown in figure 8. The guide maps of hands and feet show that the right side shows the internal organs on the right part of the body and vice versa. This technique helps relieve anxiety, asthma, aids in cancer treatment, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, headaches, kidney functions, PMS, and sinusitis.
