Ascenders and Descenders

Ascenders The part of a character which 'ascend' above it's x-height.

Descenders The part of a character which 'descend' below it's x-height.

Type Styles

Variations within a typeface.

Plain, bold, italic, underline, outline, and shadow are styles found in the Style menu for almost all applications used for creating text or graphic documents.

There are 3 important elements of a Roman typeface: heavy elements, light elements,

and serifs. The contrast between heavy and light adds character, and serifs aid

readability.

Sans Serif

Sans serif typefaces do not have serifs. They have uniform strokes, and can sometimes appear monotone.

Square SerifThese typefaces have strokes of equal weight. The serifs are square or block-like; and they have the same weight as the rest of the letter. They are used as headings or display type.

Black Letter

This type style resembles calligraphy. It is used most often for printed materials for special occasions– weddings, diplomas, etc.

Script / CursiveThese typefaces simulate handwriting. Script letters are connected, while cursive letters are not. They are good for invitations, announcements, and headings.

Novelty

Also called decorative or occasional typefaces, these fonts express special moods or themes for an occasion. They are not meant for large bodies of text.
