She rst appeared in Avengers: The Initiative #4 as amember of Henry Peter Gyrich's black ops team but itwasn't until issue #20 that she was nally revealed to beTyphoid Mary.

2 Fictional character biographyTyphoid Mary is an enemy and former lover of Daredevilwith low level psionic powers, including telekinesis. Shehas been a professional criminal employed by organizedcrime syndicates as an assassin in the past. She is alsotruly and gravely mentally ill.Her condition was accidentally caused by a pre-DaredevilMatt Murdock. He had tracked a villain down to thebrothel where Mary worked. Itwas at this moment that Mary somehow became TyphoidMary, vowing no man would ever hurt her again.[3] Inlater appearances, however, she would imply that she wasa victim of child abuse. [4]

Suering from dissociative identity disorder, MaryWalker has three other abnormal personalities in addi-tion to her seemingly healthy one. Her Mary person-

ality is a timid, quiet, pacist; her Typhoid personal-ity is adventurous, lustful, and violent; and her BloodyMary persona is brutal, sadistic, and misandrous. Maryonce claimed that there was a fourth personality, who is'lost,' but it has not since been mentioned. Aside fromhighly developedmartial arts skills, Walker also possessestelekinetic powers and, more dangerously, pyrokinesis, the ability to set people or objects in her immediate vicin-ity aame.In her rst appearance, she met Matt Murdock, andwas hired as an assassin by the Kingpin.[5] She thenrst battled Daredevil, while beginning a romance withMatt Murdock.[6] She temporarily reverted to her Marypersonality,[7] but then reverted to her Typhoid per-sonality, and began a romance with the Kingpin.[8] Shehired Bullet, Bushwacker, Ammo, and the Wild Boys toattack Daredevil,[9] and then personally led these crimi-nals against him.[10]

A favorite pawn of the Kingpin, Typhoid frequently bat-tled and had a love-hate relationship with Daredevil be-fore disappearing. Through hypnosis, the abnormal andpsychotic personalities were suppressed from Walkersconsciousness, and she began to lead a normal life, be-coming an actress on a soap opera. She was sent byDoctor Doom to learn the secrets of Kymellian technol-ogy from Power Pack during the Acts of Vengeance.[11]She was subsequently in the Kingpins employ once again, and met Bullseye.[12] She helped thwart an attempt onthe Kingpins life by Crossbones.[13] At one point, asshe struggled to keep her multiple personalities undercontrol, she befriended Mary Jane Watson and battledSpider-Man when Bloody Mary resurfaced and she be-gan killing men who committed domestic abuse. Withthe web-slingers help, Mary regained control and volun-tarily turned herself in to the police for treatment.[14]

At one point, Mary was conned to a mental institutionwhere each personality hired a mercenary. Mary hiredDeadpool to kill her, Typhoid hired him to break herout, and Bloody Mary hired The Vamp/Animus to breakher out to resume a killing spree. Deadpool defeated theVamp/Animus but refused to kill Mary, allowing the Ty-phoid personality to become dominant.[15] Typhoid andDeadpool had a few adventures together, including trav-eling to New York City to confront Daredevil for acci-dentally kicking her out of the brothel some years ago(Typhoid regained the memories of this incident whenDeadpool pushed her out of a window), before Deadpoolattempted to reform Typhoid. However, following the Kingpins fall from power andsubsequent near-death coma, he recovered and startedrising back to power, taking out his enemies. To dis-tract Daredevil while he retook his criminal empire, theKingpin paid a visit to Walker at her show and, witha blunt slap, released the abnormal personalities. Mur-docks bodyguards Luke Cage and Jessica Jones managedto take her down after she confronted Daredevil in hissecret identity and set him on re. Mary was impris-oned on The Raft, a maximum security prison for super-powered criminals.[17]

Electro later led an attack on the Raft, breaking out theprisoners. While the Avengers arrived and managed tostop some of the prisoners, Mary managed to escape andwas briey mentioned[18] as once more working for theKingpin.

    2.1 The Initiative

Mutant Zero, art by Stefano Caselli

At some point after the events of the superhuman CivilWar, Mary is found by Henry Peter Gyrich and recruitedinto the Initiative program. It is currently unknownwhether she suered some sort of psychotic episode

which left her too unstable to be left to her own devicesor whether she sought out treatment and joined of herown free will. Gyrich reveals that 'Mutant Zero' is a mu-tant that not only remained empowered followingM-Day,but one that is not included in the ocial record of theremaining mutants. Technically not existing in any o-cial capacity (according to Gyrich), Marys true identityis made classied and she is given the codename of Mu-tant Zero. According to Dr. Leonard Samson, MutantZero is still mentally unstable and that referencing anyof her other identities could lead to a period of instabil-ity. Mutant Zero is inducted into the Initiatives black opsteam, the Shadow Initiative, but due to her mental insta-bility she can only be activated once per mission or riskher becoming mentally unstable.[19]

When Taskmaster is appointed as eld leader of theShadow Initiative, he senses something familiar aboutMutant Zeros body language (thanks to his superhumanability), and initiates an impromptu sparring match withher to satisfy his curiosity. After witnessing her ght-ing style and provoking her into using her pyrokinesis,Taskmaster shatters her helmets faceplate and reveals heras Typhoid Mary.[20]

As the Shadow Initiative prepares to capture Hardball inMadripoor, Mary reveals that the reason why she joinedthe Initiative is because she couldn't merge or block outher four personalities, so she oered to join in exchangefor a pardon and to help integrate her fractured mind, which is still a work in progress.[21] During the ShadowInitiatives ght against HYDRA, Mary loses control ofher personalities, having spent too much time from theZero Room, and ees into the wilds of Madripoor.[22]

    2.2 Shadowland

    Main article: Shadowland (comics)

Mary answers Daredevils call for superheroes to join himand The Hand in providing martial law for an ever in-creasing area of New York City. She claims that her timein the Initiative was successful in integrating her fracturedmind, but Daredevil does not believe her. Following thewar, Kingpin - using secret code words to activate herfourth personality - reveals that she was an inside agentwho was ignorant of her 'true' goal all along.[23]

    2.3 Sisterhood

Typhoid Mary joins the Sisterhood, as Lady Deathstrikepromises to use Arkea to reintegrateMarys personalities, which Arkea then does.[24] The sisterhood, specicallyArkea and Amora, resurrect Selene and Madelyne Pryor. But before the Sisterhood can recruit additional membersand go on an oensive, the X-Men attack. Typhoid Maryis defeated by Psylocke. Arkea is killed, while Madelyne

3 Powers and abilitiesTyphoidMary is a mutant and possesses a number of lim-ited psionic powers. She can use telekinesis to levitatesmall objects over short distances (such as weapons ofunder 10 pounds; knives, razors, etc., which her BloodyMary persona often gathered and assembled into impro-vised battle-armor). She is a powerful pyrokinetic, mean-ing she can cause spontaneous combustion within line ofsight to set objects in her immediate vicinity aame. Shecan implant mental suggestions in the minds of others. She can use her psionic hypnosis ability to induce sleepin weak-minded individuals and most animals; certain in-dividuals are mentally resistant to her hypnotic powers. However, she has three separate personalities as a resultof her mental illness. The timid, pacist Mary person-ality has no psionic abilities. The Typhoid and BloodyMary personalities have the full range of these psionicpowers and they are strongest in Bloody Mary. Heroriginal Mary Walker personality is supposed to be abalanced amalgam of all of these, but is seldom domi-nant. Because of the dierent heart rates and voice pat-terns of her dierent personas, not to mention the dif-ferent ways of dress, even Daredevils super-senses werelong unable to tell the dierent personas all belonged tothe same woman, and Typhoid Mary took advantage ofthis situation to hide from Daredevil/Matt Murdock evenwithin earshot. As Mutant Zero, Mary appears to possess the samepsionic powers utilized by both Typhoid and BloodyMary. It is unknown whether the powers she possessesas Mutant Zero are equal to or stronger than those of theBloody Mary personality. Recent battles suggest theyare more powerful, but take their toll on Mary when usedas a result of this strength. Mutant Zero is also equippedwith a suit of full body armor that appears to enhance herphysical strength and an arsenal of weapons, includingguns and various blades.Typhoid Mary is in excellent physical condition. She hassucient reexes to block and redirect a bullet back atits shooter. She has peak human agility, and is highlyathletic. She is also trained in themartial arts, particularlyJudo and Kendo. She has exceptional skill in wieldingand throwing bladed weapons, and is usually armed witha variety of machetes and smaller knives.

4 Other versionsIn House of M, Typhoid Mary appears as an assassin ofWilson Fisk.[26]

In the Mutant X reality, Typhoid Mary is a member ofthe Avengers.[27]

5 In other media TyphoidMarymakes a non-speaking cameo appear-ance in the X-Men cartoon series episode BeyondGood and Evil pt. 3. She appears as one the psy-chics captured by Apocalypse (including Psylocke,Oracle, Moondragon, Emma Frost, Stryfe, JasonWyndgarde and Rachel Summers).

A villain named Typhoid (portrayed by NatassiaMalthe) appears in the Elektra lm, but the onlyreal similarity she had to the comic book charac-ter is the name. In the lm she is an assassin forthe Hand whose breath or touch kills whatever theycome into contact with. Her poison touch spreadsvastly throughout an area at will, killing life, andshe can poison her weapons by breathing on them. The precise limitations to the poison that leaves herbody is unknown, nor to how quickly and wide shecan spread it. She was once a skilled ninja calledthe Treasure, and is jealous of Abby who is the newTreasure. Typhoid gives Elektra a poisonous kiss, which almost kills her. She succeeds in killing Abbywith her breath-poisoned weapons, although Elektralater resurrects Abby with the same method that hermaster, Stick, had used to revive her after she waskilled by Bullseye in the Daredevil movie. AfterElektra kills Kirigi in a nal battle, Elektra throwsa sai through the hedges of a maze and straightinto Typhoids face. Typhoid falls back onto theground and disintegrates. The character is specif-ically called Typhoid Mary rather than just Ty-phoid by both the producers and Jennifer Garnerduring the Making of Elektra feature on the DVD.

Typhoid Mary appears in the Sega CD video gameThe Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin as oneof Kingpins personal bodyguards (Bullseye is theother). Both of them must be defeated beforeSpider-Man can reach Kingpin.
