Cinder Volcanoes
• Built from lava fragments called cinders• Grow rapidly• Max 250m in height 500m in diameter• Steep conical hill formed above a vent• Eruptions usually don’t cause loss of life
Location
• 100 cinder cones on the flanks of Mauna Kea, Hawaii
• Most historically active is in Nicaragua
• One located in Paricutin, Mexico grew 300 ft in 5 days
Composite Volcanoes
• Constructed from multiple eruptions
• Numerous of these volcanoes around the Pacific rim, known as the “Rim of Fire
• Also known as Strato volcanoes
• Often exceed 2500m in height
• Between eruptions they may seem extinct
Shield Volcanoes
• Largest Volcanoes on Earth
• Eruptions are only explosive if water somehow gets into the vent
• 90% of the volcano is lava
• Shallowly-sloping sides
• Largest volcano located on Mars
