Absence Seizures

Absence seizures usually happen at first during childhood. They are so brief it
appears the child is not paying attention for a few seconds. Absence
seizures consist of brief periods of altered consciousness and come on
without warning. The child “blacks out” for 5-6 seconds. May complain of “lost
time”.

Parents should watch for: blinking eyes, staring into space, slight movements of
facial muscles, arms or legs.

Myoclonic Seizures

Myo means muscle and clonic means contractions. One of the most difficult types of seizures to control, the child
will experience sudden, massive muscle jerks that could involve the total body
or just certain parts. The seizures occur in clusters, often with many occurring
at the same time.

Tonic Clonic Seizures

Formerly called grand mal, tonic clonic are the most common types of seizures. They usually demonstrate at about 12 years of age. After the initial stiffening (tonic) the child’s muscles quickly and
repeatedly go from relaxation to contraction (clonic). During recovery or postictal stage, child may sleep from 30
minutes to several hours.

Parents can observe for: child falling stiffly to the floor if they were standing,
contractions of chest and diaphragm muscles at same time, jaws and hands clenched, pupils dilated and may stop
breathing or turn blue.

Atonic Seizures

A means without and tonic means tone. Between 2-5 years of age, these
seizures are a.k.a. drop attacks. Legs collapse and child falls face down.
Uncontrolled fall is common source of injuries. Loss of consciousness from 10
seconds to one minute is common.
