Types of Neuron

Page 2: Types of neuron

Neuron• It is the basic structral and

funtional unit of Nervous system.• Neurons are specialized to

transmit information throughout the body.

Three types of Neurons

Types of Neurons

Sensory Motor Interneurons

Page 4: Types of neuron

Motor Neuron• Motor neurons carry signals from the

central nervous system to the outer parts (muscles, skin, glands) of your body.

• If its axon terminal join with other neuron it forms synapse, but if it join with muscles or glands it form motor nerve end plate.

• Largest nerve cell in nervous system.• Also called multipolar neuron because

numerous dendrites projects from cell body, in multiple direction.

Motor Neuron Cont’d

• Deals with OUTGOING messages from the brain/spinal cord to act upon the outside world• They have very long axons.

Sensory Neuron• Sensory neurons carry signals from the

outer parts of your body (periphery) into the central nervous system.

• Sensory neurons also called unipolar neuron, bcz Dendrites and Axon terminal arises from same axis.

• Also called AFFERENT Neurons• Transmit impulses from the receptors in

our sense organs (the eyes, ears, skin, nose, tongue and muscles, organs ) to the brain.

Pseudounipolar neuron• Is a sensory neuron in the peripheral nervous system.• Dendrites and Axon terminal arises from same stem.

Page 8: Types of neuron

Inter Neuron(associative neurons)• Interneurons connect various

neurons within the brain and spinal cord.

• Interneurons, carry information between motor and sensory neurons.

• Only found in the brain, spinal cord, and eye.

• Easy to recognize – they have short axons.
