Different types of music video.

Narrative music videos.A video consisting of mainly a storyline relating to the lyrics and meaning of the song. This is a good technique for making the audience want to watch the video and engage in the story, almost like a short film. Theorist Levi Strauss notes that narrative is created by a struggle between binary opposites, one side being the right side which the audience recognize and support, therefore drawing them in.These types of videos are often used when the song is featured in a film, such as Miley Cyrus when I look at you which was written for the purpose of the film ‘the last song’. Artists can also use videos to tell their own story of the career for example, such as edsheeren. Some narrative videos do not link with the lyrics, or song meaning, or even the artists. Although still being narrative, they are more sided to the concept style of music video.

Concept music videos.Concept music videos are very strange and often do not relate to the song, lyrics or artists at all. They have little or no meaning or messages in them and one example would be Her Morning Elegance by Oren Laviehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY .

Sometimes these videos are based on a technique, for example in the above example still image movie. Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually unusual and obscure, even surreal for the audience. Because it is so strange and unusual the audience like to watch the video and their attention is grabbed, which draws them in. Concept videos usually are combined with one of the other two styles as the market demands for greater accessibly rather than the somewhat niche that is pure concept art. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the screen.

Performance music videos.

The simplest of music videos. They consist of clips of a band of artists performing, singing, playing the song. Very often, these videos are halved with a narrative video, so the singer is singing the song whilst acting out a narrative. This is where the different types can get confusing. But generally performance videos are of people performing their songs, sometimes this can be in an unusual location, which then leads onto the connectional side, but again this is just something that varies.
