What is Energy• Energy can be defined as the ability

to do work.

• Whenever work is done, energy is transformed or is transferred from one system to another.

Page 3: TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical and Thermal

Main Forms of Energy1. Mechanical (Kinetic & Potential)

2. Electromagnetic (Radiant)

3. Electrical

4. Chemical

5. Thermal (Heat)

6. Sound Energy

7. Nuclear Energy

What is Mechanical Energy?

o Energy due to a object’s motion

(kinetic) or position (potential).

The bowling ball has mechanical energy.

When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred

to the pins!

Examples of Mechanical Energy

Page 6: TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical and Thermal

What is ElectromagneticEnergy?

o Radiant energy

o Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light,

infrared rays, microwave and

radio bands

Page 7: TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical and Thermal

What is Electrical Energy?

o Energy caused by the movement of

electrons

o Easily transported

through power lines and converted into other forms of

energy

Page 8: TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical and Thermal

What is Chemical Energy?

o Energy that is available for release from

chemical reactions.

The chemical bonds in a matchstick

store energy that is transformed into thermal energy

when the match is struck.

Examples of Chemical Energy

Page 10: TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical and Thermal

What is Thermal Energy?o Heat energy

o The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are.

A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid

movement.

A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less

movement.

Nuclear Energy• Is stored in the

nucleus of an atom and is released during nuclear reactions.

• Ex: Nuclear fission and fusion

• Nuclear power plants use fission reactions to produce electricity.

Kinetic & Potential Energy• Energy of motion• Formula:

• KE = ½ mv²• KE = kinetic energy (J)

• m = mass (kg)• v = velocity (m/s)

• Energy of position or stored energy

• Formula:• PE = mgh• PE = potential energy

(J)• m = mass (kg)• g = gravity (m/s²)• h = height (m)

Practice Problems1. How much kinetic energy does a 10 kg

object traveling 3 m/s?

2. How much potential energy does a 4 kg object have that is 5 meters off the ground?

3. Calculate how much energy a 7 kg object sitting on a 3 meter ledge has.

4. A 4 kg rock is rolling 25 m/s. How much energy does the rock have?

5. A rolling ball has 24 joules of kinetic energy and is rolling 3 m/s. Find its mass.
