“D” PILOTAIR Valves are spool type directional valves with two-way, three-way or four-way operation. They are built with open exhaust ports and with tapped exhaust ports. With different valve stems the three-way and four-way valves may have a mid-position where all ports are lapped, supply is connected to delivery or delivery is connected to exhaust. Lever, button, pedal, treadle, cam pilot cylinder or solenoid operates the “D” PILOTAIR Valve. These operators may be put on either end or both (see OPERATION). The operator may have springs to return the valve system to its normal position when the operating force is removed.

WARNING - INSTALLATION AND MOUNTING The user of these devices must con-form to all applicable electrical, me-

chanical, piping and other codes in the installa-tion, operation or repair of these devices.

Installation! Do not attempt to install, operate or repair these devices without proper training in the technique of working on pneumatic systems and devices, or under trained supervision.

Compressed air systems contain high levels of stored energy. Do not attempt to connect, disconnect or repair these products when a system is under pressure. Always exhaust the pressure from an air system before performing any service work. Failure to do so can result in serious personal injury.

Mounting! Devices should be mounted and positioned in such a manner that they cannot be accidentally operated.

INSTALLATION Mount the “D” PILOTAIR Valve on a solid flat surface by means of the mounting holes in the body. Do not support the valve by piping alone. It may be installed in any position. When installed vertically, protect the end of the valve if there is danger of dirt or moisture falling into it. Connect the port in the body of solenoid operators to an air supply not exceeding 150 psi (10 Bar). The pilot cylinder operator contains a 1/32” choke for air operation. Identify passages through the valve and label ports before installation. To facilitate installation, each port, each end bracket and the operator can be rotated in 90° steps around the stem by removing the tie rods and turning the section. Do not make a modification unless it is absolutely necessary. All modifications should be made on a clean bench to insure that dirt does not enter the valve.

ADJUSTMENT The “D” PILOTAIR Valve requires no adjustment.

MAINTENANCE Periodically dismantle the “D” PILOTAIR® Valve for inspection and cleaning. Wash all metal parts with a non-flammable solvent. Wash all seals with soap and water and examine them for cracks or signs of wear. Dry all parts with a low-pressure air jet. Replace worn or defective parts. Reassemble the valve, using the exploded view as reference. The valve should be reassembled using new rubber parts. As the assembly proceeds, lubricate all rubber parts with Dow Corning 55 M Grease and all metal-to-metal surfaces with Number 107 Lubriplate.

KIT ASSEMBLY At times, operators in kit form and assembled valve portions are stocked separately, and complete “D” PILOTAIR Valves are assembled as needed. The operator kits are packages containing the entire operator’s parts and all the fastenings needed to assemble the operator to the valve. The explored illustrations accompanying the operators’ parts lists in this booklet show how the parts fit together. To assemble a complete valve from the kits, remove the stem from the valve portion. Assemble the operator portion and connect the stem to it. Cover the stem with light oil. Remove the tie rod nuts and always assemble the short threaded ends of the tie rod first to use the full thread. This will obtain full thread engagement on both ends when the long threaded end is assembled last. Insert the stem in the valve portion. Tighten the bolts evenly together.

OPERATION To operate a “D” PILOTAIR Valve a manual, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical force is applied to its operator. This force moves the valve’s stem which, in moving to another position, opens and/or closes internal passages in the valve. The accompanying diagrams illustrate how the valve’s stem opens and closes its passages. Some stems have two positions –one at each end of its travel. Some stems have three positions-the third being midway between the end positions. In their end positions, three and four-way valves have one or more passages open. Moving the stem to

other end position closes the passages that were open and then opens the passages that were closed. The mid-position results in one of three conditions-all ports lapped, supply connected to delivery, or supply connected to exhaust. The valve portion of a “D” PILOTAIR Valve in addition to its stem, has two end sections, a body segment for each tapped port, seals between sections and seal retainers. Four tie rods, which pass through each section, hold these parts together. Two-way valves have two-tapped ports-supply and delivery. Three-way valves with open exhaust ports also have two ports – supply and delivery. Their exhaust port is the open-ing in one of their end sections through which the stem passes. Three-way valves with tapped exhaust ports have three ports: supply, delivery and exhaust. Four-way valves with open exhaust ports have three tapped ports-one supply and two delivery ports. Their ex-haust ports are the openings in the end sec-tions through which the stem passes. Four-way valves with tapped exhaust ports have five tapped ports-one supply, two deliveries and two exhaust ports. Passages between sections are the open-ings in the sides of sections through which the stem passes. Lands on the stem close these openings. Grooves on the stem open them. Stem position determines whether a land or a groove is in an opening. The seals in the valve portion prevent the es-cape of fluid through the joints between sec-tions and past the lands of the stem. The seal retainers keep stem drag and unbalanced in-ternal fluid pressures from forcing the seals into the path of the stem where they could be damaged. Operators are attached to the ends of valve portions by tapped bolts, which screw onto the ends of the tie rods. They are connected to the valve stems by cotter pins or roll pins. Lever, button and treadle operators can move a stem in both directions. The others can only push it. The solenoid operator uses local fluid pressure to move the valve’s stem. These operations are made with full return spring, with

Page 2

Page 3: TYPE “D” PILOTAIR VALVE

These operations are made with full return spring, with centering spring and without spring. A full return spring moves a valve’s stem to its position at the other end of its travel with the removal of an operating force that had moved it from this posi-tion. A centering spring returns a valve’s stem to its mid-position with the removal of an operating force that had moved it from this position. Two-way valves never have centering springs. Three and four-way valves have centering springs when the valve is to have the ”inching” feature, that is the ability to admit or to exhaust quantities of fluid from the delivery line and then close all ports to retain the fluid in the delivery line without change. The stem of the valve having an operator without spring remains in the position in which an operating force moves it to. The use of a “D” PILOTAIR® Valve determines the kind of operator it has and whether it has a full return spring, a centering spring or no springs. Lever, button or treadle operators without springs can be used alone on a valve as they can move a stem in both directions. Pedal, cam, pilot, cylinder, or solenoid operators without springs or with centering springs cannot be used alone, since they can only push the stem in one direction, and the centering spring can only return the stem to its mid-position. To be used alone, pedal, cam, pilot cylinder and solenoid operators must have full return springs. However, these operators without springs or with centering springs may be used when there is another operator on the other end of the valve. Normally a “D” PILOTAIR Valve has one operator, though in some applications it has two-one on each end of the valve. Two operators are used when stem movement in each direction is to be controlled separately. When used in pairs, operators without springs or with centering springs are used. Operators with full return springs are never used in pairs. “D” PILOTAIR Valves with either full return springs or centering springs have “normal” stem positions; positions to which the springs return the stems when operating forces acting on the valves are removed. In two and three-way valves with full return springs, these positions are either “normally open” or “normally closed” depending upon which end of the valve and full return spring is fastened.

The ends of the “D” PILOTAIR Valve are identified as “A” and “B”. The “A” end of the valve is the one with the nameplate. A full return spring on this end of a two-way valve or a three-way valve with open exhaust makes it “normally closed”. A “normally closed” valve has the passage between its supply and delivery ports closed when no operating force is acting on the valve. A “normally open” valve has this passage open unless an operating force closes it. With three-way and four-way valves with tapped exhaust the placing of the spring is not critical since supply and exhaust ports are interchangeable.

BASIC VALVE - Solenoid operators with pilot pressure piping. Select the Basic Valve Portion as shown below, add the desired Solenoid Operator Kits (which must be coded in the suffix when Factory assembly is desired).

The Basic Valve for a Piped Solenoid Operator has the special tapped body segment already assembled in the valve; Shaded areas indicate material furnished. Tubing is cut to length and formed and fittings are furnished, but tubing and fittings are not assembled to the valve. Dotted lines indicate alternate piping arrangement (the alternate tube, when required, is provided), depending on the location of the solenoid Operator. The Basic Valve will be furnished less operators when suffix is not coded.

OPERATOR SELECTION CODES

Notes: 1. Molded waterproof coils standard in all valves. 2. Not normally used when valve is to have two operators. Use an operator with no spring return or one with centering spring. Installation on the “A” End of two-or-three

way valve makes normally closed valve. Installation on the “B” End makes normally open valve. 3. When used as only operator on valve, specify Centering Spring Kit (Code 54) for other end. When used with another operator, operator must have centering spring. 4. To be used only on valve with another operator. 5. To be used only with another operator having centering spring. 6. Cannot be used with low pressure pilot operator on opposite end. 7. For 1/4” valves only.

NOTICE TO PRODUCT USERS

1. WARNING: FLUID MEDIA AVENTICS pneumatic devices are designed and tested for use with filtered, clean, dry, chemical free air at pressures and temperatures within the specified limits of the device. For use with media other than air or for human life support systems, AVENTICS must be consulted. Hydraulic cylinders are de-signed for operation with filtered, clean, petroleum based hy-draulic fluid; operation using fire-resistant or other special types of fluids may require special packing and seals. Consult the factory. 2. WARNING: MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY Damage to product seals or other parts caused by the use of noncompatible lubricants, oil additives or synthetic lubricants in the air system compressor or line lubrication devices voids AVENTICS warranty and can result in product failure or other malfunction. See lubrication recommendations below. AIR LINE LUBRICANTS! In service higher than 18 cycles per minute or with continuous flow of air through the device, an air line lubricator is recommended.* (Do not use line lubrication with vacuum products.) However, the lubricator must be main-tained since the oil will wash out the grease, and lack of lubri-cation will greatly shorten the life expectancy. The oils used in the lubricator must be compatible with the elastomers in the device. The elastomers are normally BUNA-N, NEOPRENE, VITON, SILICONE and HYTREL. AVENTICS recommends the use of only petroleum based oils without synthetic addi-tives, and with an aniline point between 180° F and 210° F. COMPRESSOR LUBRICANTS! All compressors (with the exception of special "oil free" units) pass oil mist or vapor from the internal crankcase lubricating system through to the com-pressed air. Since even small amounts of non-compatible lubri-cants can cause severe seal deterioration (which could result in component and system failure) special care should be taken in selecting compatible compressor lubricants. 3. WARNING: INSTALLATION AND MOUNTING The user of these devices must conform to all applicable elec-trical, mechanical, piping and other codes in the installation, operation or repair of these devices.

INSTALLATION ! Do not attempt to install, operate or repair these devices without proper training in the technique of work-ing on pneumatic or hydraulic systems and devices, unless under trained supervision. Compressed air and hydraulic sys-tems contain high levels of stored energy. Do not attempt to connect, disconnect or repair these products when a system is under pressure. Always exhaust or drain the pressure from a system before performing any service work. Failure to do so can result in serious personal injury. MOUNTING! Devices should be mounted and positioned in such a manner that they cannot be accidentally operated. 4. WARNING: APPLICATION AND USE OF PRODUCTS The possibility does exist for any device or accessory to fail to operate properly through misuse, wear or malfunction. The user must consider these possibilities and should provide ap-propriate safe guards in the application or system design to prevent personal injury or property damage in the event of a malfunction. 5. WARNING: CONVERSION, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR When a device is disassembled for conversion to a different configuration, maintenance or repair, the device must be tested for leakage and proper operation after being reassembled and prior to installation. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR! Maintenance periods should be scheduled in accordance with frequency of use and working conditions. All AVENTICS products should provide a minimum of 1,000,000 cycles of maintenance free service when used and lubricated as recommended. However, these products should be visually inspected for defects and given an "in sys-tem" operating performance and leakage test once a year. Where devices require a major repair as a result of the one million cycles, one year, or routine inspection, the device must be disassembled, cleaned, inspected, parts replaced as re-quired, rebuilt and tested for leakage and proper operation prior to installation. See individual catalogs for specific cycle life estimates. 6. PRODUCT CHANGES Product changes including specifications, features, designs and availability are subject to change at any time without no-tice. For critical dimensions or specifications, contact factory. *Many AVENTICS pneumatic valves and cylinders can operate with or without air line lubrication; see individual sales catalogs for details.

LIMITATIONS OF WARRANTIES & REMEDIES AVENTICS warrants its products sold by it to be free from defects in material and workmanship to the following: For twelve months after shipment AVENTICS will repair or replace (F.O.B. our works), at its option, any equipment which under normal conditions of use and service proves to be defective in material or workmanship at no charge to the purchaser. No charge will be made for labor with respect to defects covered by this Warranty, provided that the work is done by AVENTICS or any of its authorized service facilities. However, this Warranty does not cover expenses incurred in the removal and reinstallation of any product, nor any downtime incurred, whether or not proved defective. All repairs and replacement parts provided under this Warranty policy will assume the identity, for warranty purposes, of the part re-placed, and the warranty on such replacement parts will expire when the warranty on the original part would have expired. Claims must be submitted within thirty days of the failure or be subject to rejection. This Warranty is not transferable beyond the first using purchaser. Specifically, excluded from this Warranty are failures caused by mis-use, neglect, abuse, improper operation or filtration, extreme temperatures, or unauthorized service or parts. This Warranty also ex-cludes the use of lubricants, fluids or air line additives that are not compatible with seals or diaphragms used in the products. This War-ranty sets out the purchaser's exclusive remedies with respect to products covered by it, whether for negligence or otherwise. Neither, AVENTICS nor any of its affiliates will be liable for consequential or incidental damages or other losses or expenses incurred by reason of the use or sale of such products. Our liability (except as to title) arising out of the sale, use or operation of any product or parts, wheth-er on warranty, contract or negligence (including claims for consequential or incidental damage) shall not in any event exceed the cost of replacing the defective products and, upon expiration of the warranted period as herein provided, all such liability is terminated. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WHETHER FOR MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR OTHERWISE. No attempt to alter, amend or extend this Warranty shall be effective unless author-ized in writing by an officer of AVENTICS Corporation. AVENTICS reserves the right to discontinue manufacture of any product, or change product materials, design or specifications without notice.
