WARNINGThis warning is presented for compliance with California Proposition 65 and other regulatoryagencies and only applies to the insulation in this product. This product contains refractoryceramic, refractory ceramic fiber or fiberglass insulation, which can produce respirable dustor fibers during disassembly. Dust or fibers can cause irritation and can aggravate pre-existing respiratory diseases. Refractory ceramic and refractory ceramic fibers (afterreaching 1000°C) contain crystalline silica, which can cause lung damage (silicosis). TheInternational Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified refractory ceramic fiberand fiberglass as possibly carcinogenic (Group 2B), and crystalline silica as carcinogenic tohumans (Group 1).
The insulating materials can be located in the door, the hearth collar, in the chamber of theproduct or under the hot plate top. Tests performed by the manufacturer indicate that thereis no risk of exposure to dust or respirable fibers resulting from operation of this productunder normal conditions. However, there may be a risk of exposure to respirable dust orfibers when repairing or maintaining the insulating materials, or when otherwise disturbingthem in a manner which causes release of dust or fibers. By using proper handlingprocedures and protective equipment you can work safely with these insulating materialsand minimize any exposure. Refer to the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)for information regarding proper handling and recommended protective equipment. Intended UseThe Type 47900 and 48000 furnaces are generalpurpose laboratory and heat treating furnaces. Foroptimum element life, Thermolyne recommendsobserving these temperature ranges: from 100°C(212°F) to 1093°C (2000°F) for continuous use, orfrom 1093°C (2000°F) to 1200°C (2192°F) forintermittent use. Continuous use is operating thefurnace for more than 3 hours and intermittent useis operating the furnace for less than 3 hours.
All furnaces consist of: 1) a vented heatingchamber; 2) a temperature controller; and 3) a doorinterlock relay for operator safety.
General usageDo not use this product for anything other thanintended usage.
Principles of Operation
Furnace:The furnace chamber is heated by two open coilelectric resistance heaters and is insulated with aceramic fiber insulation. The control is locatedunder the furnace chamber and is well insulatedfrom the heat generated in the furnace chamber. Adoor safety switch removes power to the heatingelements whenever the furnace door is opened.The temperature is controlled by one of four typesof controllers.

UnpackingVisually check for any physical damage to theshipping container. Inspect the equipment surfacesthat are adjacent to any damaged area. Open thefurnace door and remove the packing material frominside the furnace chamber. Vacuum the chamberprior to use to remove the insulation dust due toshipment. (The Type 48000 furnace is supplied withone ceramic shelf.)
Retain the original packaging material ifreshipment is foreseen or required.
Site SelectionInstall furnace on a sturdy surface and allowadequate space for ventilation.
Electrical ConnectionsThe electrical specifications are located on the
specification plate on the back of the furnace.Consult Barnstead/Thermolyne if your electricalservice is different than those listed on thespecification plate. Be sure the front power switch isin the OFF position before connecting the furnaceto your electrical supply.
Installation
CautionBe sure ambient temperaturedoes not exceed 104°F(40°C). Ambients above thislevel may result in damageto the controller.
Allow at least six inches ofspace between the furnaceand any combustiblesurface. This permits theheat from the furnace caseto escape so as not to createa possible fire hazard.

Furnace Operation, All Models
Power SwitchBoth the ON/OFF power switch and the digitaldisplay will illuminate when power is turned ON.The furnace will begin to heat to its controller'scurrent setpoint. (See the instructions for your typeof controller for information on checking and settingthe setpoint.)
Cycle LightThe amber cycle light will illuminate whenever thepower is being applied to the heating elements. Thecycle light will turn on and off as the furnacereaches the setpoint.
Door Safety SwitchThe door safety switch removes power from theheating elements when the door is opened. Openand close the door a few times; note that the amberCYCLE light will be out when door is open. Thischeck must be done when the furnace is heating orwhen the cycle light is illuminated. If this conditionis not true, consult the Troubleshooting sectionbefore proceeding.

This furnace controller is a single set pointcontroller. This controller provides a single digitaldisplay to indicate either chamber temperature orsetpoint temperature. Also, this controllerincorporates sensor break protection, but does nothave over-temperature protection.
Digital ReadoutThe digital readout continuously displays chambertemperature unless the Push To Set Temperaturebutton is depressed. When the Push To SetTemperature button is depressed, the setpointtemperature is displayed.
Push To Set Temperature ButtonWhen this button is depressed, the digital displaywill indicate setpoint temperature. When the buttonis released, the actual chamber temperature isdisplayed.

Temperature Adjustment KnobTurning this knob clockwise will increase the setpointtemperature. Turning the knob counterclockwise willdecrease the setpoint temperature.
Operation of Basic AutomaticControlThis controller provides accurate control at one singletemperature setting. To set the temperature, simply:
a) Turn the Power switch ON.
b) While depressing the Push To SetTemperature button, turn the temperatureknob clockwise to increase the setpoint orcounterclockwise to decrease the setpoint tothe desired setpoint temperature asindicated on digital display.
c) Release the Push To Set Temperaturebutton.

BASIC AUTOMATIC CONTROL
The digital display will now indicate the actualchamber temperature. The furnace will heat to thenew setpoint temperature. The CYCLE light willremain on until the furnace temperature is within1°C of the setpoint temperature; the cycle light willthen turn on and off as the controller maintains thesetpoint temperature.
Sensor Break ProtectionThis controller provides sensor break protection inthe event the thermocouple opens. If an openthermocouple condition occurs, the digital displaywill indicate 5 degrees or less and the power to theheating element will be shut off (CYCLE light willextinguish).
NoteIf at any time theTemperature Adjustmentknob is turned in eitherdirection, the setpoint willchange, even if the PushTo Set Temperature buttonis not depressed. To viewthe current setpointtemperature, depress thePush to Set Temperaturebutton.

Single Setpoint TemperatureControl (Automatic)

This furnace controller consists of amicroprocessor-based three-mode (Proportional,Integral, Derivative), single setpoint temperaturecontroller. The controller features programmableover–temperature protection, thermocouple breakindication and self-tuning capability.
Digital Readout:The Digital Readout continuously displays chamber(upper display) and setpoint (lower display)temperatures unless the “SCROLL” button isdepressed.
Initial Startup:When the power switch is turned on the controllerwill perform a self-test to make sure controller isoperating properly. (If all four 1’s do not light up orfails to go to “8888” contact Thermolyne.)
This temperature control is asingle setpoint device. Byusing the "UP" or "DOWN"buttons, a specifictemperature can be chosen.The control will cause thefurnace chamber to heat tothe chosen temperature andhold it at this temperatureuntil you turn off the powerswitch or select anothertemperature.

Temperature Indication:This controller will display all temperatures in °C.Contact Thermolyne if control needs to be changedto °F.
Adjustment of ParametersThis controller's buttons are incorporated into itsfront panel. To illuminate the “DOWN” button,“SCROLL” button, and “UP” button, touch anywhereon front panel.
Setpoint Temperature:Push the “UP” button or the “DOWN” button tomodify the temperature setpoint (shown on thelower digital display). Once set, the setpoint willremain unchanged until you reset it. This allows youto set the controller for a consistent procedure, thensimply turn the furnace on and off with the powerswitch.
High Alarm (Over-TemperatureProtection OTP):Push the “SCROLL” button until “AL.SP” (AlarmSetpoint) appears.
Depress either the “UP” or “DOWN” button toselect the OTP value you desire. Thermolynerecommends that you set the value either at themaximum operating temperature of the furnace(1210°C) or a value of 20 degrees above yourworking temperature if you desire to provideprotection for your workload.
SINGLE SETPOINT TEMPERATURE CONTROL (AUTOMATIC)
NoteWhen performing thesesteps, remember that if morethan eight to ten secondselapse before the buttonsare used again, the displayscreen will automaticallyswitch back to displayingchamber temperature. If thishappens, light up the frontpanel again and step througheach parameter until youreach the point at which theinterruption occurred. Theparameter values youchecked earlier, however,will not be lost or altered.Holding down on the“SCROLL” button allowslonger viewing time.
NoteOvertemperatureprotection: The controller isfitted with a mechanical relaywhich is de-energized in thealarm mode. This relay,when de-energized, removespower from the heatingelements. If the primarycontrol circuit fails, the OTPwill control the furnacetemperature at the presetvalue you have entered. Itdoes not shut off the furnace,but will maintain the chambertemperature at that value.

Tuning:This control incorporates a self tuning feature whichdetermines the optimum control parameters for thebest temperature accuracy with your load andsetpoint. Use this feature the first time you use yourfurnace and each time you change either yoursetpoint or the type of load you are heating.Barnstead/Thermolyne highly recommendsusing this feature to provide the besttemperature accuracy the controller can attain.To use the Tuning feature:
First, adjust the setpoint to your desired value.Then, push the “SCROLL” button until “tunE”
appears. To start the tuning function push the “UP”button.
When the tuning process is started, the lowerdisplay will flash “tunE” along with the furnacetemperature setpoint. During tuning thetemperature setpoint cannot be changed. Tochange temperature setpoint, “tunE” must be turned“OFF.” To stop the tuning function push the“DOWN” button.
The next time you use your furnace, push the“SCROLL” button until “tunE” appears. Insure that“tunE” is “OFF.”
SINGLE SETPOINT TEMPERATURE CONTROL (AUTOMATIC)
NoteIf the power to furnace is“turned off” or interruptedwhile in “tuning,” uponreturning power to furnace,the controller display willindicate “LinE FAIL” becausesampled data could bequestionable. To restarttuning, refer to “Tuning”procedure.
If the controller cannotmaintain temperaturesetpoint, “tunE FAIL” willappear on display. Firstcorrect the problemresponsible for notmaintaining temperaturesetpoint, then restart “tuning”procedure.

This controller consists of a microprocessor basedthree-mode (Proportional, Integral, Derivative),programmable temperature controller with "Fuzzy"logic capability, programmable over-temperatureprotection and appropriate output switching devicesto control the furnace. The digital readoutcontinuously displays chamber (upper display) andsetpoint (lower display) temperatures unless the“SEL” button is depressed.
The programmable control can be used as asingle setpoint control or as a programmablecontrol.
Single Setpoint OperationTo use as a single setpoint control simply push“UP” or “DOWN” button to choose a specifictemperature.
1. The setpoint temperature presently set inthe control will be read out on the lowerdisplay.

2. To change this setpoint, depress the “UP”or “DOWN” button until the desiredsetpoint value is displayed, then releasethe button.
3. At this point the furnace will begin to heatif the new setpoint temperature you havechosen is higher than the present chambertemperature.
Programmed Operation
Control ParametersYou can gain access to the control parameters by
holding the “SEL” button depressed for about 3seconds. "LoCt" will be displayed in the upperdisplay.
Depressing “SEL” once again shows the nextparameter and its current value on the display. Theparameter value can either be modified with thebuttons or left unmodified. Pressing the enter button(>) will allow you to modify the current value usingthe "Up" and "Down" buttons. Press the enterbutton again to set the new value as the currentvalue. (See "Programming the Controller" forinformation on programming.)
The control parameters in order are:
LoCt - Parameter lock level. Determines thenumber of parameters displayed when you press"SEL". It should be set to "0002." If it does not,set to "0002."
Nod - Mode. By pushing “UP” or “DOWN” buttons,can be set to "Auto" or "NAn" (Manual). Set to"Auto". In Manual mode, you must enter values tocontrol the furnace chamber temperature.
NoteWhen examining theparameters, if you depressand release either the “SEL,”“UP,” or “DOWN” buttonsand more than 1 minuteelapses before the buttonsare used again, the displayscreen will automaticallyswitch to displaying chambertemperature. If this happens,you will have to step througheach parameter until youreach the point at which theinterruption occurred. Theparameter values youchecked earlier, however,will not be lost or altered.
4 RAMP & 4 DWELL PROGRAMMABLE MODELS
NoteThe furnace will begin toheat to the current setpointtemperature when you turnthe power switch "ON." Toexamine the controlparameters without heatingthe furnace, depress andhold the “DOWN” button untilthe setpoint (lower) displayreads "20".

At - Autotuning feature. Will automatically setoptimum PID values for your process. ForTuning, set to "on." For normal operation, set to"oFF."
StAt- Status. Displays current status of programand cannot be changed.
Tine - Time. Displays the time remaining in thecurrent program.
ProG - Program options. Can be set to one ofthree options: "oFF", "rUn" or "hold". "oFF" willstop any running program and reset the programto the beginning. "rUn" will start a program fromthe beginning or resume a program from "hold"from the point it was held. "hold" will interrupt arunning program without resetting the program tothe beginning.
Sü-1 - Setpoint 1. The temperature at which thefirst ramp is aiming and at which the first dwellwill be held.
tN1r - Ramp time 1. The time the controller willtake to change the chamber temperature from itspresent temperature to the value of Setpoint 1.This time may be limited by the physicalcapabilities of the furnace.

P-on - Power-on start. Push the "Up" or "Down"Buttons to set to "Yes" or "No." When set to"Yes," your furnace will immediately beginrunning the set program when you power on yourfurnace. For most applications, set to "No."
The next three parameters - Proportional band,Integral and Derivative - are the three controlparameters of a P.I.D. control system. The valuesfor these parameters are set during the tuningprocess. You should not change them; doing somay cause your controller to operate incorrectly.

AL1T - Alarm type. This parameter determineshow the controller responds to any alarm input. Itshould display "0031." If it does not, set it to"0031."
AL11 - Furnace overtemperature alarm. Thisparameter determines the absolute upper limit onthe furnace chamber temperature. Werecommend a setting of "1200" since 1200°C isthe maximum temperature your furnace canobtain without damage to furnace components.
NoteOvertemperature protection:The controller is fitted with amechanical relay which is de-energized in the alarm mode.This relay, when de-energized,removes power from theheating elements. If theprimary control circuit fails, theOTP will control the furnacetemperature at the value youhave entered for AL11. It doesnot shut off the furnace, but willmaintain the chambertemperature at that value.

You may wish to set the parameter lower if youneed to ensure a crucial process is protectedfrom high temperature.
AL12 - High deviation alarm. This parameterdetermines how far the furnace chambertemperature can rise above your setpoint. Werecommend a setting of 20; since a P.I.D. controlprocess involves some degree of temperatureovershoot, a setting of less than 20 may interferewith the function of your controller.
LooP - Thermocouple break alarm detectiontime. For proper operation of your furnace, thisparameter should be set to "0.00". If it is not, setit to "0.00".
CTrL - Control type. Push the "Up" or "Down"buttons to set to "Pid" or "FUZY". Programmedoperation requires P.I.D. control. Single setpointoperation will achieve better control using Fuzzylogic control.
Programming ControllerThis controller allows you a maximum of 4 ramp
and 4 dwell segment combinations, thus enabling 4different setpoint levels to be achieved. Each rampis programmed by specifying the endingtemperature level and the required time to ramp tothat temperature. The controller then automaticallycalculates the ramp rate required to attain theending temperature level based on the desiredramp time. Dwell segments then can be attached toeach temperature level to hold that temperature fora specified amount of time.To run a program, first determine your ramp times,ending temperature levels and dwell times. It ishelpful to graph your program out for ease ofloading the program into the controller.

Self Tuning FeatureThis programmable control has an automatic tuningfeature which installs optimum tuning parameters togive the best temperature accuracy with your loadand setpoint or program. No manual loading oftuning parameters is needed. Barnstead/Thermolyne highly recommends using thisfeature to provide the best temperatureaccuracy the controller can attain. Use thisfeature the first time you use your furnace and eachtime you change your setpoint or program or thetype of load you are heating. To use the Tuningfeature:
1. Select the temperature at which you intendto operate. If you will be running aprogram, enter the value of Setpoint 1 as asingle setpoint.
2. Load your furnace with a characteristicsample of the load you will be heating.
3. Push “SEL” button until “AT” is displayed,then push “UP” or “DOWN” button to turn“AT” “on.”

The temperature control inthese models is aprogrammable “and”automatic single setpointdevice. When the programhas ended, the controller willmaintain the chambertemperature at a value equalto the last programmed level(Setpoint 4) until the programis cancelled. It will notautomatically cool to ambientunless Setpoint 4 is set atambient. When a program iscancelled, the controller willmaintain the chambertemperature at a value equalto the single setpoint modesetpoint.
Note
NoteFor processes which cannottolerate the overshootnaturally generated duringthe tuning process, select"Lo" rather than "on" for the"AT" setting. The "Lo" settingwill tune your furnace at atemperature below yoursetpoint, then apply theresult to your setpoint. Thisapproach prevents thenecessary tuning overshootfrom exceeding your actualsetpoint.

During the operation, “TunE” flashes in the lowerdisplay. Do not make any adjustments to thecontroller parameters during this period. The selftuning is finished when “TunE” no longer flashes inthe lower display.

This furnace controller consists of amicroprocessor-based three-mode (Proportional,Integral, Derivative), programmable control withovertemperature protection and appropriate outputswitching devices to control the furnace. The upperdigital display indicates the measured chambertemperature and the lower display indicates themain setpoint temperature unless the scroll buttonis depressed. (See Figure 4.)
The programmable control can be used as asingle setpoint control or as a programmablecontrol.
Single Set Point OperationTo use as a single set point control, simply push upor down buttons to choose a specific temperature.

Control ParametersControl parameters are viewed and changed
using the “SCROLL” button. If the scroll button isdepressed and released, the lower display willindicate output power (OP) or setpoint (SP). This isreferred to as the “short scroll.” Continued singlestep action of scroll button will cause lower displayto alternate between setpoint (SP) and outputpower (OP).
To enter the main scroll list (list of all controllerparameters that are accessed through frontkeyboard), the scroll button should be helddepressed. Pnr1 (program number 1) will appear.To progress through the parameter list, release thescroll button, then use single step depression toadvance through the list. You can rapidly progressthrough the parameter list by holding the scrollbutton depressed. For all the parameters, pushingthe up or down button will give current setting.

PR1 - Program Ramp Rate. The rate of heatincrease or decrease in °C/minutes.
PL1 - Program Level. The temperature to whichthe furnace needs to attain.
PD1 - Program Dwell 1. Amount of time in minutesto hold PL1 program level temperature entered.

ST - Self Tune. Automatically loads PID values oninitial start up. (See Furnace Operation forfunction of Self Tune).
AT - Adaptive Tune. Analyzes and inputs optimumPID values when temperature has reachedsetpoint. (See Furnace Operation for function ofAdaptive Tune).
SAT - Self Adaptive Tune. When engaged, startscontroller off in self-tune mode then automaticallyswitches to Adaptive Tune (AT). (See FurnaceOperation for function of Self Adaptive Tune).
ATR - Adaptive Tune Band setting. Determinesthe operational band width of the adaptive tuningfunction. Self-tuning automatically determinesthis setting.
AL1 - Alarm 1. A full scale alarm which protectsload and furnace when temperature exceedspreset value. Furnace will control temperature atthe preset temperature value; it will not shut offfurnace.The next three parameters – Proportional (PB)
Integral (+i) and Derivative (+d) – are for highaccuracy control. Self-Adaptive Tuning will changethese parameters to their optimum values. Youshould not change them; doing so may cause yourcontroller to operate incorrectly.
The next two parameters – cutback low (cbl) andcutback high (cbh) – are to aid the control inpreventing temperature overshoots andtemperature undershoots. The point from setpointwhere the power starts “cutting back” is defined asthe cutback value. These values are alsoautomatically adjusted by the Self Tune andAdaptive Tune features. These values cannot bechanged by the user; the controller automaticallyinstalls optimum cutback values when in Self andAdaptive Tuning.

HL - Output Power limits the average maximumpower that is applied to the heating elements.Normal setting is 100%. If you plan to use thefurnace below 260°C (500°F) the output powermay be reduced. This will significantly shortenthe time it takes for stabilization. It will alsoreduce drastic temperature overshoots. ContactBarnstead/Thermolyne Customer Service foradvice on the proper value to use. Rememberthat this parameter does not reduce the voltageto the elements. It reduces the average power tothe elements by cycling power on and off.
HC - Cycle Time is the rate at which power issupplied to power control switch.
Sbr - the percent of power that is supplied to thecontrol output terminals if an openthermocouple condition exists. Push up ordown button. 0.0 will be displayed. Thisparameter cannot be changed; if 0.0 is notdisplayed, contact Barnstead/Thermolyne. Theupper display will flash “OR” if an openthermocouple condition exists.
Programming ControllerThe multi-programmable controller in these unitsprovides up to 4 separate programs of 8 ramps and8 dwells each. This controller also allows you to linkprograms together, which allows you to achieve 64total segments (4 programs X 16 segments). Thesefunctions are controlled by two of the controller’sprogramming parameters, “Pnr” and “Cnt.”
To run a program, first determine your ramp rate,dwell times and program levels. It is helpful tograph your program out for ease of loading programinto controller.
A maximum of 8 ramp and 8 dwell segmentcombinations are available per program, thusenabling eight different setpoint levels to be

achieved. Each ramp is programmed by specifyingthe program level (PL) and the required ramp rate(PR). The controller then automatically calculatesthe time that is required to attain the program level(PL) based on the desired ramp rate (PR). Dwellsegments (soak) then can be attached to eachprogram level (PL) to hold that temperature for aspecified time.
To select program numberPush scroll button until “Pnr 1” is displayed. Pushthe up or down button to select a program numberfrom 1 to 4.
To link programs togetherPush scroll button until “Cnt n” is displayed. Pressand release the up and down buttons to switchbetween “Cnt y” (continue yes) and “Cnt n”(continue no). The effect of selecting “Cnt y” is tocontinue the program to the next program number.For example, if in program #3 you select “Cnt y,”when program #3 is complete, program #4 will runautomatically. Setting “Cnt y” in program #4 willinitiate the start of program #1 upon the completionof program #4. Each program will complete theselected number of loops before continuing (seeLoop Count). If you do not want to link programs,set Cnt to “Cnt n” (continue no).
Program Entry1. With the controller not operating, indicated
by the bottom right hand side of thedisplay extinguished, depress scroll buttonuntil PR1 is displayed. Push the up ordown button to scroll to the desired value,which is degrees per minute.
Scrolling down below zero will give three otheroptions for the ramp:

NONE-which will force the program to skipto the next segment;
END-which will cause the program to stopor restart if loops remaining is not zero;
STEP-which will cause the program tostep to the next program level.
All other ramps in the program are set in a similarfashion by selecting “PR” followed by the relevantramp number.
2. The level to which the first ramp is aimingis entered by scrolling through the mainscroll list until “PL1” is displayed. Bypressing either the up or down button thepresent value of this level is indicated indisplay units. Using the up or down buttonwill scroll the present value to the newvalue required. All other levels in theprogram are set in a similar fashion byselecting “PL” followed by the relevantnumber.
3. To set the dwell time for the first level,scroll through the main scroll list until“Pd1” is displayed. Pressing the up ordown button will reveal the current value oftime in minutes. Using the up or downbutton will scroll the present value to thenew value required. Scrolling this valuedown will allow a setting of “END.” Asetting of “END” will terminate theprogram, or force it to restart if loopsremaining are not zero at the beginning ofthat dwell.
All other dwells in the program can be set in asimilar fashion by selecting “PD” followed by therelevant dwell number.

4. Scrolling through the main scroll until theparameter “PLC” is displayed and thendepressing the up or down button willreveal the present setting of the loopcount. This is the number of times that theentered program will be repeated before acontinuous setpoint at the last level of theprogram is achieved. By pushing the up ordown button the number of loops can beset at any value from 1 to 999.
HoldbackThis controller features a “holdback” (Hb) functionto ensure programmed parameter values areadhered to. Holdback is set in display units(degrees) and represents the allowable excursionof measured value away from the current setpoint,either above or below, before the program is forcedinto hold (clock stops).
The program will remain in hold until themeasured value comes within the holdback band(clock starts). This feature is active the whole timethat the program is running. (Holdback functionsonly while running a program).
Scroll through the main scroll list until “HB” isdisplayed. Push the up or down button to reveal thecurrent value of holdback. The up or down buttoncan now be depressed to scroll to the requiredvalue. Select desired holdback setting – a setting of20° is recommended. Holdback is set in displayunits and represents the allowable excursion ofmeasured value away from the current setpoint,either above or below, before the program is forcedinto hold. The program will remain in hold until themeasured value comes within holdback limits. Thisfeature is active the whole time that the program isrunning. When hold is forced onto the program byholdback, the “HOLD” legend is not illuminated, buteither the “RAMP” or “DWELL” legend will flash.

When the program is in “holdback,” it effectivelylengthens the time of the program – if the holdbackband “Hb” is set too low, the program will neverescape the holdback band, thus the program willnever be completed. If you do not want to use theholdback function, set “Hb” to an extremely largevalue.
Program ExecutionOnce the program has been entered it can be runby depressing the “RUN/HOLD” push button on thefront.
With the run initiated, the program will commenceand the legend on the display will indicate if a rampor dwell is being performed. While a program isrunning, the short scroll will contain a thirdparameter “TIME.” Push the scroll button once; timeremaining for the current segment, either ramp ordwell, will be indicated. If the loop counter has beenset to any value other than one, then the aboveprocedure will be repeated for each loop.At the end of the complete program, an “E” willappear on the display.
Parameter Change While RunningThe previous parameters can be inspected but notchanged while a program is running. If it isnecessary to alter a parameter while a program isrunning, the program must be placed into the holdcondition. To put program into hold, push the “RUN/HOLD” button once. After modification of theparameter, returning the program to the run statewill cause the program to continue with thechanged value(s) installed. Push “RUN/HOLD”button again to restart program.

Loop CountIf the loop count is set to values other than one,then the number of loops remaining in a runningprogram can be displayed. To determine which loopis being performed depress scroll button until "LR"is displayed and by pushing either the up or downbutton the remaining number of loops, excludingthe one being executed, is displayed.
Program HoldA running program can be forced into hold at anystage by depressing the “RUN/HOLD” push buttonon the front. When a running program is forced intohold, the “HOLD” legend will appear on the displaytogether with the segment type and will be flashing.Pushing “RUN/HOLD” button again will return theprogram to a run situation and extinguish the“HOLD” legend.
Program ResetA running, held or finished program can be reset bydepressing the up and down push buttons together.
When the reset has been enabled, the parts ofthe display associated with programming will beextinguished and the controller will operate as asingle setpoint control.
SAT Self Adaptive TuningThis programmable control has automatic tuningfeatures which install optimum tuning parameters togive the best temperature accuracy with your loadand setpoint. No manual loading of tuningparameters is needed. Thermolyne highlyrecommends using these features to providethe best temperature accuracy the controller

can attain. Use this feature the first time you useyour furnace and each time you change yoursetpoint or program or the type of load you areheating.
The following paragraphs instruct you on how toinitiate the SAT Self and Adaptive Tuning feature.This feature starts the controller in the Self Tunemode then automatically switches over to theAdaptive Tuning Feature.
Self Tuning is a one-time function which permitsyou to retune the instrument control parameters tosuit new process conditions. Adaptive tuning takesover when the self tune is completed andcontinuously reevaluates the tuned parameters.Adaptive tuning will then automatically install newvalues if a better response could have beenattained. To use the tuning features:
1. Depress scroll button until SAT isdisplayed. Depress the up and downbuttons simultaneously to start self tuning.The A-T indicator is then illuminated(upper right hand corner) and the lowerdisplay indicates the setpoint at which theself-tune sequence will occur. The “SP”indicator will flash for 1 minute, duringwhich time the setpoint may be changed ifit is required to retune at a new setpointeither above or below the process valueindicated on the upper display (usetemperature setpoint that your applicationrequires). At the end of the minute, the“SP” indicator will stop flashing, indicatingthat the setpoint can no longer bechanged. The A-T indicator will startflashing and continue to flash until the selftune has completed. Once the self tune iscompleted, adaptive tune takes over andthe A-T indicator will remain illuminated.
To stop tuning, function scroll until SAT isdisplayed and simultaneously push up and downbuttons.

For best results, use only the center two-thirds ofthe furnace chamber.
If you are heating a number of small parts,spread them throughout the center two-thirds of thefurnace chamber.
Keep objects away from the thermocouple.Use insulated tongs and mittens when loading
and unloading the furnace.Always wear safety glasses.Never come into contact with the heating
elements. Hitting the elements with tongs or layingthe load against them will cause the elements toburn out prematurely.
Furnace Loading
Do not overload your furnacechamber. If the load is to beheated uniformly, it shouldnot occupy more than two-thirds of the furnacechamber. Maintain at least a3/4 inch gap between theload and elements. Failure toobserve this caution couldresult in damage to furnacecomponents.

This unit is equipped with a venting system on thetop of the furnace. This is for the removal of fumesfrom the chamber of the unit. Contamination is amajor cause of element failure, therefore, removeall fume forming material before heating. (e.g. cleancutting oil from tool steel).
Housekeeping is vital to your electric furnace –KEEP IT CLEAN. Run your furnace up to 871°C(1600°F) empty occasionally to burn off thecontamination that may exist on the insulation andelements. Maintain 871°C (1600°F) for at least 4hours to insure complete ashing of foreignmaterials.
Element life is reduced somewhat by repeatedheating and cooling. If the furnace is to be usedagain within a few hours, it is best to keep it at theoperating temperature or at a reduced level such as260°C (500°F).

To Replace a Heating Element:1. Disconnect the furnace from the power
supply.
2. Remove the back terminal cover of thefurnace. (Note placement and connectionof wires.)
3. Loosen the nuts on the terminal points ofthe four heating element lead wires andremove the element wires from theterminals.
4. Loosen the thermocouple hold-down clipand carefully remove the thermocouplefrom the rear of the furnace chamber.
5. Remove both the back of the furnace andthe blanket insulation.
6. Grasp the element lead wires and pull outboth elements and the back chamberinsulation.
7. Replace the defective element.
Maintenance and Servicing

8. Reverse the disassembly procedure,making sure you thread all element leadwires through the insulating porcelainbushings on the back of the furnace andcut off any excess element lead wire aftersecuring the leads to the terminal points.
9. Reconnect the furnace to the powersupply.
10. Test the operation of the furnace.
To Replace a Chromel/AlumelThermocouple (All Furnaces):
1. Disconnect the furnace from the powersupply.
2. Remove both back covers. (Noteplacement and connection of wires.)
3. Remove the clip holding the thermocouplein place (1 screw), and remove the twoscrews on the thermocouple terminals.

4. Remove the thermocouple (Note: first pullthe thermocouple straight out of the hole inthe chamber to avoid damage to theinsulation.)
5. Guide the looped ends of the newthermocouple through the plastic bushingswith the red (-) lead to the right as youface the back of the furnace.
6. Form a 90° bend towards the furnace, withthe red (-) lead to the right. Insert thethermocouple straight through the hole inthe chamber.
7. Secure the thermocouple with clip andscrew. Connect the looped ends of thethermocouple to the terminals with + to +
(yellow) and - to - (red). (A polarity test ofthe thermocouple and lead wire is easilymade with the use of a magnet. OnChromel/Alumel thermocouples and leadwire, the non-magnetic wire is positive (
+)
and the magnetic wire is negative (-).)
8. Replace both back covers.

To Replace Door Switch (Micro-Switch):1. Disconnect the furnace from the power
supply.
2. Remove the two top screws on the frontdial and the two bottom screws and 1 lockwasher on the back cover.
3. Slide the control section forward. (Note: donot pull excessively on the internal wires.)
4. Disconnect the wires from the door switch.(Note the connection placement of thewires to the micro-switch.)
5. Remove the two screws, lock washers andnuts from the micro-switch.
6. Insert a new micro-switch and secure withthe screws, lock washers and nutsremoved in step 5.

7. Reconnect the wires identified or markedin step 4 to the new door switch.
8. To realign the door switch, see thefollowing section: To Realign DoorSwitch.
9. Slide the control section back and replacethe screws and lock washer described instep 2.
10. Reconnect to the power supply.
11. Test the operation of the door switch. (Seenext section, step 10.)
To Realign Door Switch (Micro-Switch):
1. Disconnect the furnace from the powersupply.
2. Remove the two top screws on the frontdial and the two bottom screws and lockwasher on the back cover.

3. Slide the control section forward. (Note: donot pull excessively on the internal wires.)
4. With the door closed, loosen the screwson the micro-switch and slide the switchdownward, so that the screws are at thebottom of the slots in the mountingbracket.
5. Finger tighten both screws. While holdingdown the rear of the micro-switch housing,gently push up on the front of the switchuntil you hear a click.
6. Open and close the door; the switchshould click when the door is openedapproximately 3" and 1" to 2” before thedoor is closed. Slide the front of the switchup to increase the distance, down todecrease the distance.
7. Tighten the two screws to secure themicro-switch. Check the operation of theswitch as described in step 6 aftertightening the screws.

8. Slide the control section back and replacethe screws and lock washer described instep 2.
9. Reconnect to power supply.
10. To test the operation of the door switch:turn the power switch on, set the control toa setting high enough to keep the controlfrom cycling, open and close the door; thecycle light should turn off when the door isopened approximately 3" and turn back on1” to 2” before the door is closed.
To Replace the Automatic orProgrammable Controller:
The controller plugs into a panel mounting sleevewhich should be left permanently installed in thefurnace housing. To remove the controller, graspthe top and bottom of the controller front, squeezetogether and pull out. Do not attempt to dismantlethis unit further, but replace it either with aThermolyne loaner or a new unit.
NoteTo gain access to controlsection components, simplyremove the two top screwson the front dial and the twobottom screws (with one lockwasher) on the back cover.Slide control section forward.Do not pull excessively onthe internal wires.

All parts listed herein may be ordered from the Barnstead|Thermolyne dealer from whomyou purchased this unit or can be obtained promptly from the factory. When service orreplacement parts are needed we ask that you check first with your dealer. Prior to returning any materials to Barnstead|Thermolyne Corp., please contact ourCustomer Service Department for a “Return Goods Authorization” number (RGA). Materialreturned without a RGA number will be refused.

Barnstead|Thermolyne Corporation warrants that if a product manufactured by Barnstead|Thermolyne andsold by it within the continental United States or Canada proves to be defective in material or construction, itwill provide you, without charge, for a period of ninety (90) days, the labor, and a period of one (1) year, theparts, necessary to remedy any such defect. Outside the continental United States and Canada, the warrantyprovides, for one (1) year, the parts necessary to remedy any such defect. The warranty period shallcommence either six (6) months following the date the product is sold by Barnstead|Thermolyne or on thedate it is purchased by the original retail consumer, whichever date occurs first.
All warranty inspections and repairs must be performed by and parts obtained from an authorizedBarnstead|Thermolyne dealer or Barnstead|Thermolyne (at its own discretion). Heating elements, however,because of their susceptibility to overheating and contamination, must be returned to our factory, and if, uponinspection, it is concluded that failure is not due to excessive high temperature or contamination, warrantyreplacement will be provided by Barnstead|Thermolyne.
