As school closures in the commu-nity continue to anger the publicmore mystery is emerging relat-ing to the reasons behind thesemoves by the education depart-ment.
With 20 schools closing in theWestern Cape four schools in theimmediate area are being affected.
The community has reacted withanger to the news that Lavis Drive
Park Primary on Saturday, Frankvan der Horst, one of the speakerspointed out that this decision by theeducation department should be re-jected.
“When the announcement of theclosures was made last week, par-ents and teachers were astoundedbecause they realised that the sub-missions that they made at the so-called hearings had been ignored,”he said.
“We have subsequently found outthat these hearings were a farce be-
cause decisions had been made longbefore the hearings at individualschools.
“At one of these hearings an offi-cial could already tell people thatPeakview Secondary was stayingopen, while Protea Primary wouldbe closing.
“What also angers the communi-ty is that they were told, not con-sulted, about the closure of theseschools citing recommendationsfrom officials. These recommenda-tions although requested, have nev-
er been made public.“Instead they gave us symptoms
as reasons for closure, dwindlingnumbers, poor results, bad infra-structure, but these are common tothousands of schools in the educati-on system.”
During this meeting it also emer-ged that plans for these closureshad been in the pipeline for some ti-me. While a new principal had beenappointed to “pull” a school right inApril this year.

. From page 1There was no money available for much-
needed maintenance work for them.Another concerned resident pointed out
that at one of the meetings in Bonteheuwelan official pointed out more adult learningcentres were needed because “all you saw inBonteheuwel was young girls with babies onevery corner.”
“How can they make a statement likethat?” she said.
“Have they done a survey to back up astatement like this?”
Irma Titus, another young education ac-tivist in the area said that it was also impor-tant to see how the learners themselvesweretaking these closures.
“It has seriously affected them becausethey think that it is something that theyhavedone wrong that led to these closures,” shesaid.
“Here in Bonteheuwel they even took tothe streets to protest the action and I thinkthat in some cases there will have to be someserious counselling with them tomake thembelieve in their education again.
“It is evenmore despicable when you real-ise that these decisions were made whenlearners were engaged in assessment examsat most schools.”
Various organisationswill bemeeting thisweek to decide on legal action against theWestern Cape Education Department tofight the closures.
Community will fight closures

With matriculants nervously startingtheir exams this week a young learner inBelhar wants to share her confidence toinspire learners.
Carly Smit, was all smiles and bubblingwith confidence as she spoke about a person-al journey of striving to achieve her full po-tential in life.
Attending Belhar High School she pointedout that too many youth are not prepared totake on the hardwork to be the best that theycan be.
“Too many of our youth don’t want to seebeyond the circumstances that they are in,to accept the challenge of reaching for posi-tive dreams,” she said.
“I cannot say that I come from ‘disadvan-taged’ circumstances because I am privi-leged to have a family that supports me, butthere were also many challenges, trials andtribulations that I had to overcome.
Carly added that her education started atAccordian Primary in the area and she isvery grateful for the strong foundation forlearning that this school provided.
“She laughs when she recalls thatwhen she got to high schoolmanypeo-ple regarded her as a ‘blondie’.
“I used to be sad about it becausethat is not the way that I wanted to beseen,” she recalls.
“Luckily I did not let it get me downbut it only inspired me to not onlyprove them wrong, but I was going toachieve my full potential.
“Before this year, getting an A wasjust a dream, but this year I made ita reality with six certificates andthree medals at our prizegiving,” shesaid.
Her haul of accolades included be-ing the top achiever for economicsand visual art, merit awards in busi-ness studies and life orientation aswell as for her participation in libraryactivities.
“While these awards made me veryhappy, my proudest achievement is
landing up in the Top Five by comingfourth,” she said.
All this hard work is paying off in a biggerway for Carly because she was awarded ascholarship to study Business Administra-tion at a business school in Pinelands fromnext year.
“Earlier this year I was called to the officeand told about this scholarship,” she said.
“All the top business studies learnerswereinvited to apply and we had to write a moti-vation for the scholarship. I cannot describehow I felt when I got it.”
Carly is passionate about inspiring otheryouth to reach for their dreams by believingin themselves and not what others say aboutthem.
“Listen to your heart and go confidentlyin the direction of your dreams,” she said.
“Remember that youattract success by theperson you become. God gave you a uniquetalent, use it and embrace your destiny.
“There will be people who want you to failbut youmust surroundyourselfwithpositiv-ity. I am proof that hard work pays off, noth-ing will give you more satisfaction thanreaching your positive goals.”
A confident future

A social work student is making sure thatlearners with special needs know abouthealth issues and abuse.Mxolisi Mangxola is a third year student
from UWC doing his practicals at the OasisSchool for Learners with Special Education-al Needs and he hosted a special awarenessprogramme at the school last week.“I felt that it was important to host this
presentation for the learners because evenwith their special needs they are not im-mune to the dangers involving HIV/Aids,physical abuse and even teenage pregnan-cies that exist in the communities wherethey live,” he said.“Part of this project was also to create an
environment that will enable learners, par-ents, staff and community members to worktogether without excluding each other.“Since many of the learners from this fa-
cility are often excluded from mainstreamsociety, the focus of the project is to createawareness about social inclusion.“We also hosted speakerswho spoke to the
children about reducing the stigma and dis-crimination around HIV/Aids and reducefactors that make people vulnerable to HIV/Aids.“Abusewas also part of the discussion and
we wanted to let the children know theirrights and that there are resources availableto them if they feel threatened in any way.”Mangxola also pointed out that after the
successful presentation at the school hewould like to thank the school for their sup-port to host the event.“Oasis Special School is in need of support
and it is doing its best to meet the needs ofthe learners but there are challenges.”For further information about the needs
at the school contact 021 952 2100 or email [email protected] or contact Man-gxola at [email protected].

Four students from UWC are mak-ing a difference at a primary schoolin Belhar. As part of a project to complete
their degrees in Business Com-merce Aminah de Kock, NasreenJulius, Achmad Domingo andNicole Frechtas combined their tal-ents to start the Adopt-a-Gradeproject.De Kock explained that the
Adopt-a-Grade team was estab-lished in July this year to completean assignment on Project Manage-ment.“The project instructions re-
quired us to identify a problem inthe community and implement a so-lution, which sounds pretty sim-ple,” she said.“However, we were expected to
use the tools taught in the moduleand initiate, plan, execute and closeoff the project physically and notjust as a proposal on paper.“As students we strongly believe
in the saying that: ‘knowledge ispower’ and identified our commu-nity problem as under-education.“Our solution to under-education
stemmed from its cause being thelack of learning materials and wetherefore planned to ‘adopt a grade’of scholars from a school thatlacked the basic stationery needed
to enable its learning facilitators toeducate learners and provide theadopted grade with stationery.”In order to fund the project the
Adopt-a-Grade team approachedseveral companies for donationsand purchased stationery includ-ing, writing books, pencils, mathe-matical sets and calculators to sup-ply the entire Grade 3 class at theDr Van de Ross Primary School inBelhar.“While the projectmayhave been
started to pass a module it has defi-nitely impacted the lives of theAdopt-a-Grade team and all partiesaffected by the outcome of theproject as well as boost the aptitudeof the kids,” continued De Kock.“Therefore we would like to ex-
press ourgratitude to the staff at theschool for welcoming us and wewould like to showourappreciationto Extreme Fast foods, Steelworld,Victoria Park Butchery, DesmondFrecthas, Mickey, Najwah De kock,Faldielah Gassiep, Baderiya Fakir,Abdullah Fakier, Nadia Harounand the Davis, Domingo and ShiraFamilies for all their generous con-tributions.“They played a huge role in help-
ing the project achieve its goal, through enabling us to donate sixboxes filled with stationery.“After the successful execution of
the project, the team has come tothe realisation that a pencil is notonly an instrument for writing, it
also symbolises a tool of empower-ment, it equips scholars with the
ability to build a strong foundationto a bright future.”
Kids grateful for new stationery

The sun’s rays are playing a big part in anenvironmental project at Sunray Primaryin Delft.
It’s all part of the school’s Sunrays inFlowers project that is happening at theschool and it’s become unique in their focuson endangered species of fynbos.
Jason Hanslo from the school explainedthat the project is managed by a group oftree-hugging environmentalist teachers andone parent, as well as the learners who arebecoming very proud of their achievements.
“Our first real start came with an invitein 2010 to be part of the South African Na-tional Botanical Institute’s Green Pro-gramme,” he says.
“We started off with an indigenous gardenranging from aloes to zantedescias (varkle-lies).
“Now, in our second year we have just re-cently extended our garden to specifically bea haven for red-data and endangered speciesof fynbos; also known as sand-dune fynbos. We are also proud of our rare and licensedcycad.”
Hanson also added that they have activelybeen participating in workshops and small-er info-sessions that encouraged them tomake contact with other like-minded organ-isations; WESSA, Unicef, GreenPop, Trees4
schools, and Seed.He also expanded his knowledge by at-
tending Nedbank’s Greening Your Businessproject and passed with flying colours.
The school was recently visited by Green-Pop who planted over 50 indigenous trees in-cluding this year’s SA tree of the year (Syzi-gium cordatum) and some fruit trees.
“Our learners are excited about the pros-pects of sitting under a tree during intervalsand they are also taking more of an interestin the progress of the garden.
“Some of our teachers are also pointingout that they are starting to water the gar-den on their own as they take ownership ofit.
“This is encouraging us to host work-shops during next year that will help learn-ers, parents and the community to be ableto grow their own food.”
While the school is getting help with theirinitiative from various organisations theywould like to appeal to the general public todonate their empty two-litre plastic bever-age bottles to the school.
“We use these bottles as erosion banks inour garden, but also in a bid to encourageour learners to become responsible for theirown trash,” concluded Hanslo.
For further information about the projectHanslo can be contacted on email [email protected].

Wiekan ’n snytjie louwarm, varsgebaktebrood weerstaan?
Eerstens, wanneer jy gis
7 koppies (1 kg) meel2 teelepels (10 ml) sout1 pakkie (10 g) suurdeeg
(gis)4 koppies sterk louwarm
waterVerhit oond tot 180 ˚C.
Meng droë bestanddele, voegsterk louwarm water by enmeng goed deur.
Kontak Louise by 021 591 8391 met navrae.

ANDRÉ BAKKES
Somewhere out there, squeezed intosome garage in the middle of Both-asig, lies an impeccable world oftrains, automobiles, buildings andfigurines.Eric Tucker’s love for his hobby
translates into hundreds of plasticmen and women who go about theirbusiness in a handmade railwaytown. His scaled-down world is designed
to take one’s breath away, so it’s vir-tually a crime to keep it hidden fromthe public, since this 40-plus yearproject should be celebrated for it’sintricacy and perfection.Mind-blowing detail overwhelms
thewide-eyed giantswho sporadical-ly enter the garage.Upon first viewing one will see
trains churning along a mountain-ous plane. Then one notices the lights burn-
ing brightly inside the myriad ofbuildings, the cars resting on bridg-es, the trees lining the streets, therailway tracks criss-crossingthrough, around, underneath andover the amazing landscape andthen...Some will sit down for a while to
take it all in – then they will see thelittle men and women walking alongthe road, working on a constructionsite, riding on bicycles, attending awedding, farming land, drinking at
their local pub and working on therailway lines.Deep breaths are compulsory for
giants when they enter the garage! If they happen to pass out from
sheer exhilaration then their top-pling masses will surely cause cata-strophic earthquakes and Eric-quakes. The 68-year-old Eric hasbeen building his world for yearsand he admits that it would never becomplete. “It has probably takenme
40-odd years,” hesays nonchalant-ly.He cuts the fig-
ure of an unim-posingman. Eve-ry single itemwas handcraftedby him and thenfound a placewhere it alwaysbelonged.Looming over
his immense mi-nuscule worldare some superbpencil sketchesof locomotives, which unsur-prisingly, he hasdrawn.
Askhimabout trains or his young-er days and a wealth of informationwill inevitably steamroll out.“When I was a kid my parents
bought me a large o-gauge Hornbytrain, somy interest in trains startedthen. “I remember getting on a trainto Rhodesia at Johannesburg Sta-tion. We were heading out into dark-est Africa, it was like going to themoon! That station had an atmos-phere about it in those days... It wasquite incredible. Sometimes youwould arrive in a small town andthere would be a whole brass bandwaiting for you at the station!“My whole life revolved around
that sort of thing, because my dadworked for the railway line.“Trains were like five-star hotels
back then!” he exclaims. While he names all the trains in
his stories, which are almost alwaysset in Southern African railwaytowns, one’s eyes just keep driftingtowards his amazing miniatureworld. The boundary between amanand his hobby has faded over time, and now it is unclear where the realEric ends and his fantasy world offacts and anecdotes begins.Go toTygerBurger’s website to see
more images of Eric’s World.

While children all over the coun-try wished to get a bandana intheir favourite colour to wear toschool last week to raise moneyfor the Sunflower Fund, all a lit-tle girl of Oakdale wished for isnot to be sick so that she can justgo to school.
The parents of Emma Fourie (9)are still trying to absorb the devas-tatingnews that her aggressive can-cer has returned after almost fouryears of ongoing surgery, chemo-therapy and radiation.
Emma was first diagnosed withcancer in 2008 – only six months af-ter her sister, Alex (5), was born
with an abnormal heart condition.“We were still frail from the first
bad news, when I discovered oneday, whilst bathing Emma, that shehad a hard lump in her left but-tock,” Emma’s mother, Natalie, said.
“After an MRI scan and biopsy, the lump turned out to be cancerous– a sort of cancer of the soft tissue.”
Twenty weeks of chemotherapyfollowed, of which Emma spent 14weeks in hospital. That was fol-lowed with six weeks of radiationtherapy.
“By week three the top layer ofher skin looked like third degreeburns. The skin was so raw, we had
to give her strong pain medicationjust to let her go to toilet,” she said.
After radiation, more chemother-apy followed, totalling 16 months oftreatment.
Thereafter, Emma had to go for athree-monthly MRI scan, X-raysand blood tests. “Everything wasgoing well. Emma started Grade 1at Gene Louw Primary and enjoyedher dance lessons. We were plan-ning to go on a trip with somefriends,” she said.
WhenEmmawent for her normalMRI scan and check-ups in January2011, they suspected nothing. How-ever, another tumour was discov-ered and Emma had to be operatedon for the tumour to be removed.
“Due to financial reasons, as wewere still trying to recover fromlast time, we had to change medicalaids.Ournewmedical aidhas givenus a 12 month exclusion on cancerfor Emma. So, we then had to fundeverything ourselves.
“The expenses were big. In onlyfive months our hospital accountran up to almost R100 000. I’m so ter-rified that they will stop Emma’streatment as we cannot afford topay,” she said.
She had six sessions of intensechemotherapy. However, it was de-cided radiationposesmajor risks asthe tumour extended into the pelvicwall.
In October that year another tu-mour was discovered. She went forsurgery in November to try and re-move the tumour in five and a halfhours of surgery.
Emmahad thenundergone 23 ses-sions of radiation. This was once
again followed by chemotherapy.“Shewas able to go to the first day
of Grade 2 this year – she really en-joyed it. Due to her treatmentschedules, she was only able to goto schooluntil the endofFebruary.”
In the last week of February shecommenced with chemotherapy.
She suffered very bad side effects. The final chemotherapy sessionwas completed in July this year andthe radiologist confirmed that allthe scans are clear.
However, in September, Emmastarted complaining that her backwas sore.
Another tumourwas found in thebone ofEmma’s spine. “We immedi-ately had to start her on steroids totry and reduce the swelling. Shortlyafter, they discovered another tu-
mour in the bone of a vertebra, thatis busy encroaching on the nerve ofher spine, causing the pain in herback.
They also found a recurrence ofthe old tumour in the pelvic region. There are also three visible lesionsin the liver – one the size of a golfball.
“The oncologists and radiologistsdo not see any cure this timearound. They gave her 10 sessionsof radiation.
“We are exploring some alterna-tive non-invasive treatments. Alsoto keep her on a good diet and pray, pray, pray for a miracle,” she said.
Financially this puts strain onthe family. Anyone who wishes toassist, can send an email to Natalieat [email protected].
Brave face as cancer reappears
Emma is bravely trying to keep up with her schoolwork.
All 64 children of the Kids Can PrePrimary School bought a bandana forBandana Day and raised R1 300 for the Sunflower Fund. One of the childrenin the school is Emma’s cousin – Emma suffers from cancer.
Bellvilliete aangeteken.Edgemead (153) is baie goed geplaas

VascoDaGamaopened their seasonon a high note when they beat Wit-bank Spurs 3-0 in a National FirstDivision league match at ParowPark on Sunday afternoon. The home team dominated right
from the start, but had to wait untilthe fifth minute to open the scoringwhen midfielder Zeka Karkee cras-hed home a brilliant close rangeshot.Geofrey Serunkuma made it 2-0
before the break, and from there theParow side should have buriedWit-bank Spurs in an avalanche of go-als, with the chances they created, but poor finishing meant there wasno further improvement on the sco-re before halftime. However, they improved after the
break and dominated the secondhalf, even though they were onlyable to increase their lead by one
more goal through John Karkee inthe 84th minute with a well takenheader. The former Hanover Park player
benefited from great set-up play bythe likes of Gareth Ncaca and Ro-berto Do Santo, while goalkeeperKyle Peters was another star forVasco Da Gama, keeping a cleansheet with some excellent saves toensure Witbank Spurs never hadthe slightest chance of a comeback.Sibusiso Mbonani the Witbank
Spurs defender was given the redcard for kicking Sici Shelembe inthe 70th minute.“It will always be difficult to play
the first game of the season, especi-ally with a number of new playersthat we have in the squad but wemanaged to get three points andthat’s important,” says the VascoDa Gama coach Antonio De Nobre-ga.Engen Santos played to a goalless
draw away to FC Cape at the NNKRugby Stadium inKimberley on Sa-turday afternoon. Both teams started at a fast pace
and there were scoring chancesfrom the opening minutes.Though the “People’s Team’’ do-
minated most of the match and hitthe crossbar through SalmaanKingin the secondhalf, theywere unableto capitalise on the chances theycreated. Both teams had strong penalty
appeals turned down. One minutebefore the end Mzuvele Skhosanawas given the red card for elbowingNasief Morris.Nooij Martinus the Santos coach
would have preferred to start witha win away from home, but was ple-ased they managed to get a point af-ter all. “FC Cape are a good teamand others who come here willstruggle to get a good resultsagainst them,” he said.

A blistering south-easter made things verytough on cyclists who took part in Sunday’sTiletoria West Coast Express cycle event inSunningdale.Although it was no pleasure on the ride
back from Atlantis it proved helpful for thisyear’s winner of the 85 kmmen’s Elite groupDave Garrett. Riding for Team Focus, Gar-rett was part of the early break-away groupof five riders. “We attacked after about 15 kminto the race, just after the Koeberg PowerStation on the R27,” Garrett said.“Then we dropped one rider. After about
