Affordable homes awinner says researchGARY VAN DYK

Affordable housing in middle incomegroups is making positive changes in com-munities.The findings of an independent study

have just been released to show hownew af-fordable housing developments in SA (andespecially in the Cape) are changing the so-cial fabric of the country. The research, commissioned by Interna-

tionalHousingSolutions (IHS), a private eq-uity funder of affordable housing in SAwhich has already invested in more thanR8,4 billionworth of developments through-out SA, was conducted by Francois Viruly, property economist and University of CapeTown (UCT) professor.Speaking at one of the company’s projects

in Belhar last week he pointed out that thiswas the second year in a row that the studyhad been undertaken.“It shows interesting year on year trends

on the impact of affordable housing on com-munities and includes factorssuch as job creation, employmentand access to transport.“In-depth interviews were con-

ducted in households in morethan 20 developments that weredone by the company and conclu-sions suggest that tenants andowners continue to experiencesignificant benefits from thistype of housing compared toavailable alternatives in thehousing market.“The affordable housing sector

is still a relatively unknown enti-ty amongSouthAfricans, with fo-cus having fallen almost exclu-sively on RDP housing in thepast.“In most provinces there is a

severe shortage of housing foryounger professionals or peoplestarting to work, and this type ofproject is an example from a sec-torwhich is changing theway thecountry approaches the housingquestion.”The study also showed that the

popularity of this type of housingwas growing because it offeredtenants a pleasant area in whichto live with safety and securitybeing a priority.Other factors that played a big

part included proximity to publictransport andworkplaces aswellas hospitals, police and of courseschools.

Viruly’s research also showed that therewere also lots of positive effects when itcame to the welfare of the respondents inhis research.“Many felt that living in such an environ-

ment motivated them to help improve theirneighbourhoods,” he said.“In this respect they feel safe and have a

sense of belonging while getting value fortheir money.“This then also improved their leisure

time and social life with access to recrea-tional facilities and a better quality of lifefor their children.“The building of these projects also

played a part in job-creation for surround-ing communities during building and withmaintenance.”The presentation of the results was held

in Belhar at Aurora Village, an example ofan IHS funded affordable housing projectand proof of the changing face of lowermid-dle income SA suburbs and a possible blue-print for future affordable housing.

Community empowerment is developingin Bishop Lavis.

The Bishop Lavis Development Forum(BDF) was formed last year and they’re in-viting interested individuals and organi-sations from Bishop Lavis, Sydneyvale,Valhalla, Clarks Estate, Malawi Camp,Freedom Farm and Kalksteenfontein toattend a discussion on the role of commu-nities in creating possibilities to addressthe challenges within these communities.

Chairperson Quentin Newman saidthat the idea is to concentrate on the shar-ing of capacities and resources in commu-nities.

“We must discuss what we have in com-

mon to make a positive change in ourneighbourhoods,” he said.

“There must be an understanding thatpeople’s positive attributes are more valu-able than their deficiencies or needs, andthat we are worth something, because wecan contribute.

“What we contribute, makes the com-munity grow.”

This meeting will take place on Satur-day 27 April, in the school hall of the Bish-op Lavis High School, from 09:00 to 12:00.

At this meeting there will also be dis-cussion among the various brancheswithin the forum that will include YouthDevelopment; Sports and Recreation;Arts and Culture; Education; DifferentlyAbled; Religious Fraternity; Health; So-

cial Services; Media; Small Business; For-mal Business; Transport and Justice(Lawyers), to discuss the resources gifts, within every sector, and how it can be de-veloped and enhanced.

Later this year they will be hosting abigger event to show the community whatthey have been achieving in communi-ties.

Members of the broader Bishop Laviscommunity are kindly requested to attendthis very important meeting, so that an in-ventory of resources can be drawn up anddistributed amongst the community.

V If you wish to attend the meeting contact LionelPeters (secretary) on 073 975 7585 or QuentinNewman on 084 363 4216.

Combining resources for all

GARY VAN DYK

The safety of children received anotherboost last week with the launch of an organi-sation to help when children go missing.

Rosendal Primary school in Delft was thescene for the launch of Identi Masses, an or-ganisation that aims to have a data bank ofdetails of all school-going children in SouthAfrica.

Last week, the learners at the school madehistory by having their personal informa-tion and DNA taken for safe and secure stor-age on a national electronic database andDNA bank.

The purpose of this exercise is to assistthe South African Police Services and otherNGOs involved with missing children byhaving all data readily available at all andany times.

This initiative is the brainchild of WilmaWilson who was motivated to have such adatabase when her own child went missinga few years ago.

“Thankfully he was found very quickly, but you can’t explain that initial feeling ofhelplessness when you first realise yourchild is missing,” she said.

“You may think it may never happen toyou but when it does you can’t stop the panicthat sets in and you don’t know where tostart with the information that you need togive the police.

“With this system in place, hopefully, there is an immediate resource to start thatsearch for your child.”

She further explained that because timeis valuable in the event of a child going miss-ing, vital information is crucial in thesearch and positive identification of a miss-ing child.

“The increasing number of children go-ing missing annually is a growing concernin our country.

“We want to play an active and leadingrole in the protection and future of our chil-dren by making this service available to allchildren nationwide, even in the most rural

areas.“Participation in the project is voluntary

and parents are under no obligation to sub-mit their child’s information against theirwill.”

The project aims to reach as many chil-dren between the ages of five to 18 years, starting in the Western Cape, and it willthen be rolled out to all provinces.

The computer systems and DNA databasehas been designed by Worldwide Applica-tions (Pty) Ltd.

Various layers of security are deployed toprotect the identity of the children and theintegrity of the data.

Worldwide Applications has many yearsof experience in the development of fraudprevention systems within the credit in-dustry and various computer systems usedwithin the banking and insurance indus-tries.V Anyone interested in more information about theproject or wishing to participate can contact WilmaWilson on [email protected].

Taking athletics furtherGARY VAN DYK

If you’re into athletics there’s a new clubthat wants you to get in shape.Speed/Elite Athletics Club, based at Vy-

gieskraal in Athlone, is on the lookout forpotential world-record holders to join themin their activities.Jonathan Blankenberg, one of the coaches

at the club, said that they were already pro-ducing some top athletes but that there is alot more talent out there that is not discov-ered.“The problem is that formost of these chil-

dren there is only their school athletics, andwhen it is over there is nowhere to go,” hesaid.“For our athletics talent to be nurtured

there needs to be training throughout the

year for them to achieve their potential.“I have seen toomanyof these talents from

schools just go to waste because there isno programme in place for them to improveand get stronger to take their athletics fur-ther.”Blankenberg pointed out that one of the

advantages in this club was that they hadformed a partnershipwith a club in Jamaicato assist them with training methods.“We all know that in recent years Jamaica

has produced some fantastic athletes and sowe are excited to be a part of their pro-gramme.“With their help we are sure that we will

be producing our country’s batch of Olympi-ans in the future,” he said.V For more information about the club, Blankenbergcan be contacted on 071 209 9596.

E-tolling and Sanral are in theheadlines again. I see threatsand ultimatums flying backand forth between provincialgovernments and Sanral.I did some research and

found that the e-toll bill hasbeen approved by the NationalAssembly about two years ago.How did that happen in theface of overwhelming publicopposition ?The bill was passed with the

usual ratio of ANC versus therest of the parties. I know theANC is still enjoying the rushthey get when they can thumbtheir noses at oppositionparties in Parliament. They must however not

forget to ask the opinion oftheir own constituents everyonce in a while. The mostvehement opposition to e-toll-ing has come from members ofthe public who are ANCmembers. So, are they ignoring the

public ? Maybe it’s a naivequestion. Some MPs haverequested a referendum on thematter, but nothing hashappened in that regard.I would like an article that

can explain to members of thepublic how to get activelyinvolved in opposing e-tolling.

PIERRE POTGIETERBellville

We must have asay on e-tolling

The wisest man in the world,King Solomon said: “When thesentence for a crime is notquickly carried out, the heartsof the people are filled withschemes to do wrong.” TheHebrews, using God’s laws, including the 10 Command-ments as a basis, had noprisons and very little crime.Petty crimes were dealt with

by the offender paying suitablerestitution to the victim (notthe government!) to compensatefor their loss plus inconvenien-ce, and convicted seriouscriminals like rapists andmurders received the deathpenalty, thus permanentlyremoving them from society. Sobring back the death penaltyfor murder and rape!Of course, this godly and

common sense approach wasbefore the modern psychobab-bel of the humanists andatheists, as propagated byliberal professors at our

Godless thinking is aGodless society

universities. Darwin proposedthat we are all just evolvedpond scum, that we come fromnothing and we are goingnowhere. Well if you tell youngpeople often enough that life ismeaningless, and that they arejust animals, don’t be surprisedif some act like that. Marx saidwe are all victims of economiccircumstances. Freud said weare victims of sexual desires.Based on all this rubbish,

hardened criminals are nowseen as victims of forces beyondtheir control, to be “treated” fortheir mental illnesses, insteadof punished for their crimes. Sowe have murderers and rapistswalking the streets without fearof punishment, or nicelycatered for in prisons with theirvictims’ and others’ tax money. In the real world, we all have

the ability to chose right fromwrong, we are free moralagents. Criminals should beheld responsible for theiractions, and punished accordin-gly.Having said that, why should

people be actually encouragedto sin? Mass murderer TedBundy admitted that pornogra-phy had fuelled his murderousspree, and research has shownpornography to be a factor inmany rapes and murders. Sowhy is the Sexpo allowed in acountry with our horrific rapestatistics? Why pour petrol on araging fire?Schools already have a

religion – it is the religion ofthe secular humanists. Whyshould the Christians that makeup 70 % of this country, not beallowed Christian instruction inthe schools and universities? Why are only atheist/socialist/humanist ideas allowed? Ideashave consequences, and theresult of godless thinking is agodless society.

deel, waaronder Bernadino Heights in Kraai-fontein, Sekondêre Skool Cravenby in Pa-row, Hoërskool Malibu in Blue Downs, Hoër-skool Ravensmead en Tuscany Glen in Eer-strivier.

FienieNimb, polisiewoordvoerder.

’n Tradisionele geneesheer, wat by dieBellville-taxistaanplek handel dryf, beaamdié stelling.

By Dr. Fire betaal jy R20 vir dié stukkiebas.

Dr. Fire (Rasta), ’n tradisionelegeneesheer in Bellville, houvas ’nsakkie boombas, soos hy dit verkoop.

Durbell oor eerste MatierugbyhekkieSAREL BURGER

Die komende naweek se program (tuis-span eerste) is: Durbanville-Bellville t Bell-ville, Belhar t Victoriane, SK Walmer t Ty-gerberg-klub, Valsbaai t Kuilsrivier, NNK tHamlets, Goodwood t UWK, Hands & Heartt Brackenfell.

SKOLERUGBY: HS BELLVILLE IS BRAKKE SE TIER EN...

SAREL BURGER
