New Life Community Projects in Uitsig ison a mission of making children a positivepart of their community.

This initiative in the area is part ofgroundbreaking work of psychologist Pro-fessor Gerrie Smit, currently the executivedirector of the organisation.

He has worked with communities in needfor many years and his particular focus ison children at risk, drug abuse, out-of-school youth and street children.

Smit is also currently a member of an in-ternational research group investigatingfamily violence in impoverished communi-ties and also heads a project aimed at allevi-ating poverty in those considered to behigh-risk communities.

While he visited the site last week hepointed out that New Life CommunityProjects has been active since 1996.

“Our other project is in Beaufort Westand the focus of this programme is on vul-nerable families and children at risk for notgoing to school, those that dropped out ofschool or living on the streets,” he says.

“The project operates from communitybased container facilities and communitybased “home schools” for children that areout of school, identified through street out-reach work on the streets of these communi-ties.

“These home schools are run by trainedwomen from the community in their homesto provide educational and therapeutic sup-port for children and their families, to en-sure sustained school attendance and posi-tive family life.”

FamilySmit also explained that another focus

was on strengthening mother-child attach-ment via therapeutic interactive videoguidance, interactive involvement of fa-thers and other family members to preventchildren from leaving the family and drop-ping out of school.V For more information www.newlifeprojects.co.za.

The City of Cape Town’s Social Develop-ment and Early ChildhoodDevelopment Di-rectorate launched its Strengthening Fami-lies programme in Elsies River on Tuesday5 November 2013.‘The programme, which focuses on chil-

dren aged 10 to 13 and their parents, wasfirst implemented in Lavender Hill andBonteheuwel in May this year, with verygood results. It forms part of our commit-ment to creating a caring city geared to-wards building strong individuals andstrong communities,” said the city’smayor-al committee member for social develop-ment and early childhood development,Councillor Suzette Little. The programme aims to help parents

raise good, responsible adults by ensuringthat children are loved, while also under-standing that there are limits and conse-quences, and then helping parents to imple-ment these boundaries and limits. It also al-lows parents to understand that limits andboundaries are not a negative thing by dis-cussing topics such as: Love and Limits, making those house rules, encouraginggood behaviour, and using consequences.“Many of the social ills that we deal with

in Cape Town and the rest of the country, including crime, gangsterism, substance

abuse and people ending up on the streets, emanate from problems in the home; hencethe decision to start the StrengtheningFam-ilies initiative, because it deals with thecauses and not just the symptoms,” saidCouncillor Little.Using very practical and interactive

methods, children are taught to have goalsand dreams, how to appreciate their par-ents, how to deal with stress, how to resistpeer pressure, and to associate themselveswith good friends. The family sessions teach both child and

parent how to appreciate family members, understand family values, build familycommunication and use family meetings. All of these elements contribute to build-

ing a strong, unified family that knows howto deal with conflict and differences in ahealthy, productive manner. It also assistsin raising strong, independent, responsibleadults who will contribute positively totheir communities. The programme launch inElsies River at-

tracted 24 families, including 30 young peo-ple. Following the eight-week programme, familieswill attend a graduation ceremony, after which they will attend sessions oncea month for two years, for ongoing assess-ments and feedback.

place during the most difficult epoch inour country,” he explained. “However,at that time their individual contribu-tions to the various sporting codes werenot duly recognised.

“This was due to historical divisionsand rivalries that existed between un-ions and federations.”During apartheid, sportsmen and

women experienced abnormal trials andtribulations; from poor infrastructure tounavailability of adequate funding, to at-tend or organise events.“Yet, despite this, they registered glo-

rious accomplishments that defied theoppressive conditions,” continuedMadiehe. The Tygerberg Sports Trustrecognises the challenges faced by thesesports persons, and lauds their achieve-ments. This recognition will hopefullyspark them to help rebuild and developour communities, now that their effortsof using sports to unify our country arerecognised.”Georgina Benting and Danlee Math-

algemeen gebruik.

Wanneer die psigopaat hom vasloop of

Kontak homby 021 949 5007 of [email protected] of ‘ST sePitkos’ op Facebook.

Companies continue to importproducts that could be madelocally. South Africa hasbecome an import economywhile raw materials remain akey export.

Even food production thatwas once an economic pillar isbeing imported. This mustchange if we hope to creatework.

Since commerce is driven byprofit, it operates where profitsexist, thus job creation is aresult of business and notnecessarily its agenda. It istherefore important that localssupport commerce that has along-term benefit for oursociety. Imported productssupport job creation outside ofSouth Africa and contribute tolocal job loss.

That local political andbusiness leaders are obsessedwith foreign status symbolsreflects a lack of commitmentto the “Proudly South African”campaign. While locals buyaffordable products, manysocial leaders eagerly showcasetheir imported lifestyle.

Furthermore, building adurable economy with millionsof economic migrants withinour borders is a challenge. Thevalue of local labour is under-mined because desperateforeigners are cheaper toemploy.

So, when unskilled, cheapmigrant labour remains withinour borders, they also burdenthe limited supply of water, electricity, municipal andhospital services available tolocals. The burden on theratepayer increases as theeconomic refugee makes animpact on the progress ofinfrastructure.

Those who live in comfortmust assist the less fortunatetrapped in poverty by creatinglocal jobs.

I suggest locals continue tosupport businesses which haveour shared long-term interestsat heart. Paying more for a

In response to “Cross railwaylines where it’s safe”, Tyger-Burger Kraaifontein, 6 Novem-ber: Reading this article Inoticed that no one posed thequestion “Why?” Why are holesbeen cut in fences and why isthe line being crossed at thesespecific points?

I stay near Eikenfonteinstation. From my house I haveto take a close to one hourjourney, on foot, throughScottsville, one of the morenotorious suburbs in Kraaifon-tein. Yet my house is in a fiveminute, direct line from Eiken-fontein station. The bridge atEikenfontein station is com-pletely blocked off by fencing, which does not allow travellersaccess from one side of therailway line to the other, exceptvia Scottsville. A danger mosttry and avoid. Yes and the sadpart is that it’s the sickly, aged, infirm and children who utilisethe holes in the fences.

Simple solution, build bridgesand subways or redesignexisting bridges to make itsafer to cross lines.

RICHARD PICKKraaifontein

Your front page story (“PureHarley-vreugde”, TygerBurgerDurbanville, 6 November) was agood read, however I wouldgreatly appreciate it if thegeneral motorbike crowd wouldbe more community spirited asregards the noise emissionsfrom their machines and theadherence to speed limits.

I would just like to comment onthe “Slice of Life”, TygerBurger,6 November. I was involved inthat accident where the trucktransporting the newspapers hitmy car first, overturned andthen hit a few more vehicles infront of me. Thank heavensthere were no critical injuriesin the accident, but I wouldlike to commend the emergencyteams that helped all involved.

They did outstanding workon that morning and I wouldlike to say thank you so muchto all of you. I would also liketo thank the gentleman Phillipfrom Odendaal break-downservices who was absolutelyamazing in helping me retrievemy belongings, contacting myinsurance and assisting myhusband in getting to me at theaccident. Thank you.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Hoekom vierSA steedsGuy Fawkes?

their air brakes, the motorcy-clists are by far the noisiestvehicles flying past my houseon a daily basis.

Over weekends the volume(both in terms of numbers andsound) increases tremendously.

Despite the law limiting thesound emissions, some of thesemachines can still be heard 700metres and more passed myhouse. Some of the smallerengines have this high pitchscream while some of thebigger bikes growl deep enoughthat you cannot hear the bassfrom Zeppelin’s “Stairway ToHeaven” (something not evenmy mother could get right).

I shudder to think what willhappen when these guys (orladies) misjudge the change inthe traffic lights and smashinto a car...

There have been a number ofaccidents at the Stodels bendbut now a speed camera hasbeen installed... Maybe weshould install a few more trafficcameras.

Uitenhage boxerscan’t take heat

It was a horrid outing for Uitenhage boxerswhen they came down to participate in the“Battle of the North” in scorching weatherin a tournament outside Van Riebeck HofMall in Durbanville recently. The fight was staged by Xtreme Boxing

Promotions and sponsored by DALS MotorGroup, Studio Pascal and Cape Road Assist.First to taste defeat was Mzuvukile Dan-

ielswho faced a stocky but “boxable” Zimba-bwean flyweight Alexander Gambinda.Daniels gave signs of hope but was soon

bombarded by assortments of heavy blowsby Gambinda forcing referee CliffordMbeluto stop the fight in the third round.Asanda Jacobs facedKnysna’s left handed

Daniel Julies –with both intent on knockingthe lights out of each other it was the lankyKhayelitsha fighter who came out tops.

Daniels kissed the canvas in round twoand was counted out by Deon Dwarte. In the main bout Bulelani Kwanini faced

a tough and clinical Johaness “The Pearl ofPaarl” Salie.Kwanini showed he could box as he had

Salie huffing and puffing in the first tworounds. From round three the fitter Salieruled with an iron fist and dropped Kwaniniwith a vicious punch that connected the rib-cage.He dropped like a pole and ringside doc-

tors had to resuscitate him.Xtreme Boxing PromotionsmanagerWes-

ley Levendal thanked all those who bravedthe scorching sun: “Couldnot bemore proudof my boxer Johannes Salie; I asked him fora third round knock-out and that’s exactlywhat he did,” said Levendal.
