Rowers, glo van Elsiesrivier, voer ’nskrikbewind in dié duikweg, wat inwonersvan Ruyterwacht gebruik om by winkels inVoortrekkerweg uit te kom. Veral vroue enbejaardes word geteiken.

Henrico van Wyk, ’n Rastafariër watgroente verkoop aan die Voortrekkerweg-kant van die duikweg, sê hy is keelvol virdie rowers. “Hul hande moet afgekap word,want dit is vir niks goed nie,” sê ’n hewigontstelde Van Wyk.

Hy het al by geleentheid die wind van ’nrower, wat ’n skoolkind se Blackberry-sel-foon wou steel, met ’n sak aartappels uitge-slaan en die foon teruggekry.

Die afgelope week was dit wéér sulke tyd.“Drie van die jongens het by my kom staan

en wou twee pere met ’n R2 koop. Een peerkos klaar R1,50 – so, ek kan toe sien hullekom moeilikheid soek. Ek hou toe die geldin my hand, want ek wou nie hê hulle moetsien waar ek dit insit nie,” vertel Van Wykmet handgebare en dreadlocks wat waai.

Terwyl hy nog so met die geld in die handstaan, het ’n meisie met ’n Samsung Galaxy-

The Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs andDevelopment Planning (DEA&DP) has issued a wastemanagement license for the decommissioning of the Tygerdalwaste drop off facility on Erf No. 20496, Goodwood.

The Waste Management License provides detail on theoutcome of the application process, reasons for the DEA&DP’sdecision, as well as details on the process to follow should youwish to lodge an Appeal against the issuing of the WasteManagement License for site closure. Dit was ter wille van die liefde dat hullesaam onder ’n brug beland het; en tweejaar lank al daar woon.

Mario Lottering (39) en sy lewensmaat seblyplek onder die brug oor die Elsieskraal-kanaal, is verlede week deur ’n brand ver-woes. Hulle het alles, behalwe hul liefde virmekaar, verloor.

“Haar ouers het nie van my gehou nie enmy mense het ook nie van haar gehou nie,”sê Mario terwyl hy aan sy enigste oorbly-wende winterbaadjie trek. Sy “meisie” stapna die oorkant van die brug, weg van die ka-mera. “Ons was so lief vir mekaar dat onsbesluit het ons worry nie wat die ander sênie, ons wil bymekaar wees.”

Bymekaar beteken op die straat wees, on-der die brug wees. “Ek droom ook drome virons, maar meer vir haar. Sy verdien nie omso te lewe nie. Ons skarrel maar saam in diedromme van die mense van Ruyterwacht.”

’n Vrou in ’n silwer minibus – met dienaam van ’n ouetehuis – ry oor die brug.“Het hulle blyplek afgebrand?” skree sy inons rigting. “Hulle het gisteraand vreeslikbaklei daar,” sê sy beskuldigend.

Mario slaan nie ag op die vrou nie, hypraat net voort. Sy ore het al baie dinge ge-hoor; sy oë het baie dinge gesien. “Ek hetmaar meer by my antie grootgeword. My mais dood toe ek agt jaar oud was. My pa wasmaar ’n ander ou. Hy het baie gedrink.”

Wanneer hy oor sy pa praat, kyk hy ver-langend in die verte. “My meisie het vierkinders wat by haar ma woon. Ek het tweelaaities. Hulle bly by hul ma in die Delft –sy’t ’n ander ou. Elke keer as ek ’n orige sen-tjie het, gaan gee ek dit maar vir hulle.”

Hoewel Mario in 2001 laas ’n werk gehadhet, gee hy nie moed op nie. Hy het immers

vaardighede. “Ek was vir sestien jaar ’n tech-nician, het TV’s reggemaak. Sal nogal laaikom weer ’n job te kry, sodat ek vir my meisiekan sorg. Sy verdien beter.”

Gebeure in die land gaan ook nie verbyMario nie. “Elke ou moet stem. My stem isook belangrik. Maar ek het nie ’n ID-boekienie. Hulle sê dis nou so duur om ’n ID te laatmaak. Ai, as ek maar net geld gehad het vir’n ID.” Gaan hulle nou na ’n ander brug trek?“Ek weet nie, miskien maak ons maar netskoon. Waarheen kan ons dan gaan?”

Teen die einde van die onderhoud herin-ner Mario my: “Onthou om te sê van die jop-pie wat ek soek. Of ’n paar ou goedjies. Virek en my meisie...”

In ’n poging om die diefstal en herverkoop van Raadsvullissakke hok te slaan, druk dieStad se departement vasteafvalbestuur sedert Junie 2013 die letters “CCT SWM” gevolgdeur ’n reeksnommer in swart teks op al die Raad se blou sakke. Dit sal verseker datalle gesteelde sakke herken en die oorsprong daarvan opgespoor kan word. Ondankshierdie maatreëls wat getref is, ervaar die Stad steeds diefstal van die blou sakke watdan onwettig op straat asook in sommige winkels verkoop word. Die Stad versoekinwoners weereens om glad nie blou vullissakke op straathoeke te koop nie, aangesiendit gesteelde goedere is. Die vullissakke word gewoonlik saammet ander sakke verpaken gevou om die drukwerk weg te steek. Daar kan aangeneem word dat alle blou sakkegesteelde sakke is. Blou sakke word slegs vir al die aktiwiteite en programme van diedepartement vasteafvalbestuur se skoonmaaktak gebruik.

Entries from junior level music students tothe Hubert van der Spuy National MusicCompetition are invited by the Southern Af-rican Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO).

Now in its fourth year, the project buildson the strong foundation laid by the SA So-ciety of Music Teachers (SASMT) 26 yearsago when fledgling musicians competed ona national basis for the first time.

The closing date for this year’s competiti-on is Friday 18 April. Auditions will com-mence at the beginning of June.

About 60 candidates will eventually be se-lected to compete over four rounds at the Hu-go Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow, CapeTown, from 29 September to 3 October.

Candidates will compete in four catego-ries: piano, strings, woodwind & brass in-struments, and other instruments (percussi-on, recorder, classical guitar andharp),witha sub-category for developmental groups.Candidates must still be 13 (14 for develop-mental groups) at the time of the competiti-on.

This year South African works are com-pulsory.

The competition includes an incentive fordevelopmental groups to compete on equalterms.

Medals, prize-money totalling more thanR80 000, and other attractive prizes are onoffer.

According to Hilda Boonzaaier, whochairs the SASMT Tygerberg, the competiti-on has a broad appeal amongst instrumenta-lists across the music spectrum at junior le-vel.

“It offers participants the chance to distin-guish themselves within the ambit of theirownsections, andalso facilitates interactionand contact between students, teachers andparents from diverse communities in SouthAfrica. Theentrance toMonteVista received a facelift after members of the First Monte VistaScouts embarked on a week long cleaningoperation.The public garden opposite the Engen ga-

rage in Monte Vista Boulevard had becomean eyesore due to years of neglect.Last week the scouts, with sponsorship

from the community and the local munici-pality, cleaned up the garden and plantednew plants.Henri Theron,member of the scouts, says

they decided to clean the garden becausethey want the entrance to their town to be

beautiful.“It looked like nobody came close to the

garden for ten years. It was overgrownwithweeds,” says Henri.The group of scoutsworked for eight days

to restore the garden to its former glory.“We removedmore than ten trailer loads ofrubbish and overgrowth from the garden.That is not even counting the bags full ofrubbish we had to drive away.”Henri says the scouts will in future take

care of thepark toprevent it fromdeteriora-ting again. “I just want to thank everyonewho cares about the image of Monte Vistaand helped us to make this project possi-ble,” said Henri.

city responded to a petrolodour complaint at 9 PiketbergStreet. No petroleum smell wasdetected and officials asked thecomplainant to contact thesupervising officer directlyshould he experience furtherproblems. No phone call wasreceived.Ms Lawrence did not speak

to the complainant regarding abudget for reticulation – anddoes not even work for thereticulation section. The claimabout the budget is thereforeunsubstantiated and incorrect.

During the visit it wasestablished that there had beena sewer discharge at 11 Piket-berg Road. The clean-up crewacted swiftly to minimise anyimpact on residents and con-ducted an investigation. There was no evidence of asewage spill from the peripherybut the inspector requested MrJohansen contact her if adischarge occurred again. Todate, no further problem hasbeen reported.No link has been made

The innocent pleading eyes of previouslyabused or neglected animals look up atyou, willing to give their hearts as

you step into the Uitsig Animal RescueCentre.

It is unthinkable that the some 500 rescuedanimals on these premisesmight be withouta home in three months time.

The organisation last week received no-tice to vacate the smallholding nearFisantekraal to make space for the Green-ville Garden City housing development.

It is a very real probability that these ani-mals could lose their lives if the organisa-tion loses its facilities. However, for the fer-vent, tough-as-nails animal lovers and pas-sionate founders and members of thisexceptional organisation, it’s not an option.

Massive mandate“Failure is not an option. It is a big worry

for us, but for the sake of the animalswe can-not afford to not succeed,” said foundingmember Denay Saunders, about the organi-sation’s quest to now find new land to homethe animals.

Her love and genuine concern for the wel-fare of animals is visible in the unselfishwork she, her 15 staff members and othervolunteers have put into the organisationsince its inception in 2009.

A former veterinarian assistant, it washer intention to provide abandoned and sur-rendered animals with a short-term alterna-tive to euthanasia.

Their mandate is gigantic: to rescue ne-glected, abandoned and abused animals inthe northern suburbs of Cape Town and tonurse them back to health, provide themwith a safe and loveable haven, to rehabili-tate them and to find them permanenthomes.

In fact, the centre is the only pro-life, pro-quality-of-life animal rescue haven withpremises in the northern suburbs. Thismeans they also house animals fromvariousother shelters and animal welfare organisa-tions such as the Lucky Lucy Foundation,Adopt-a-Pet and the Animal Rescue Team.

“We believe that all animals have a secondchance no matter how neglected or abusedthey were when we found them. We do notbelieve in euthanising animals andwill onlydo so in exceptional circumstanceswhere ananimal is either suffering or could not be re-habilitated. We believe in providing all ouranimals with quality of life, sufficient food,shelter and attention, until such timewe canre-home them with a suitable family,” saysDenay.

An unrealistic feat?“No. There is much hope. We have had

great success with our adoptions, while atthe same time we undertake sterilisationand animal care education programmes inunderprivileged areas and townships, to ad-

dress the problem at the core. Additionally,all the animals we rescue stay on at the cen-tre for an unlimited period of time,” shesays.

No hard feelingsAccording to Denay, they have no gripe

with the land owners, as they were awarefrom the start that the land was earmarkedfor development and their stay would onlybe temporary.

“Our landlords were very good and gener-ous to us over the years and we realise theimportance of housing. It’s just that it camedown on us rather suddenly and we nowhave to move very fast to raise the funds weneed to re-establish the centre,” she said.

The centre envisions purchasing theirown land, registering it in a trust and re-building their shelters on it for the exclusiveuse of the rescue centre.

“We have been working, for some timenow, on a future vision for a new largerworld class animal rescue centre from

which we can accomplish much more thaneven what we do now. We just had no ideathat we would have to do it so soon!”

“Weare solely dependent onpublic donorsand our own fundraising, but believe thatwith thehelp of the communitywe can reachor target in time,” she said, and adds:“Please everyone, we have only 90 days toraise what we need. The alternative is un-thinkable and will crush so many of us.”

Planning phaseCEO of Garden Cities JohnMatthews con-

firmed that theywere in theplanningphasesof phase 2 of the project, but they had giventhe farm manager of the Uitsig Farm appro-priate legal notice that they would only re-quire the land by the end of next year.

He said that the lease between the farmmanager and the centre stipulated threemonths but this notice period was not to hisknowledge envoked as yet.

“I am however happy to engage with thecentre in order to find a solution,” he said.

“We are already negotiating with theLucky Lucy Foundation who is also on theland as we acknowledge the existence of andthe need for the animal shelters.”

The organisation would need about R5million, of which they have raised R50 000to date.

South Africa’s original street style footwear brand, BronxMen’s Shoes, has recently launched a campaign, whichfocuses on recognising great South African men and theirextraordinary commitment to making a difference in theircommunities. Michael van Roodt is one of these men.

Michael van Roodt grew up in gang-ridden Hanover Park onthe Cape Flats, and life has not changed for the youth sincehe was young. Gangsterism is a huge threat in the lives ofthe Manenberg community and he wanted to make achange and keep the kids off the streets and out of gangs.

Michael was recently appointed director of Self-HelpManenberg, an independent non-profit organisation thatfocuses on developing fully functional families within thecommunity. It offers an after school programme, where thechildren are given meals every day and are involved inactivities and sports.

This Bronx campaign was launched to show that there areordinary men in our country that are interested in upliftingtheir communities and making a difference. An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race to be held at the V&AWaterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27 April.

The Cape Town race will serve as the se-cond stop on an eight-city tour starting inAuckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town, alongwith Chicago, is one oftwo cities to debut onthe WTS calendar in2014.

The world’s top tri-athletes have confirmedtheir participation inthe Cape Town leg of theseries. With eight of thetop ten elite men on thestart list, spectators canexpect a tight, actionpacked race. Local heroRichard Murray (ran-ked 5th) will take on Ma-rioMola (ESP),whonar-rowly beat him by 18 se-conds in the World Cupseason opener in Mooloolaba last month, aswell as fellow Spaniard Javier Gomez whois number one on the WTS rankings. With15 and seven World Series wins under theirrespective belts, Brownlee brothers Alistairand Jonathan are the most successful eliteathletes in the history of the series and willbe looking to retain their position.

With the top three ladies on the WTS ran-kings, Jodie Stimpson (GBR), Non Stanford(GBR) and Anne Haug (GER) confirmed, theladies competition will rival the elite men’s

for action. Olympic silver medallist LisaNorden (SWE) will also be making her ITUWorld Series comeback in Cape Town afterthe 2012 Olympics. Along with Helen Jenk-ins (GBR), she’ll be looking to regain her for-mer ITU World Triathlon Series glory.
