A huge convoy consisting of city offi-cials and law enforcers snakedthrough Edgemead early Saturdaymorning to identify, among other is-sues, vagrant “hotspots”.
The heads of law enforcement, metropolice and the Displaced People’s Unit(DPU) joined Bothasig police, trafficservices, Subcouncil 3 chairpersonJames Vos, the local neighbourhoodwatch and two private security compa-nies (District Watch and Swart Securi-ty) during the pro-active drive.
It was clear from the very beginningthat everyone present was on a missionto make a difference.
Traffic circle problems and crime ingeneral were discussed, but vagrancy inparticular was scrutinised.
The positive intervention all startedwith the Edgemead NeighbourhoodWatch initiative.
They invited Vos and he, in turn, in-vited the other roleplayers.
“It is most pleasing to see all the verysenior officials from the various law en-forcement agencies in attendance. Thisshows that we are all working togetherto make Edgemead a safer place for allour residents. It also shows the commit-ment from the City of Cape Town to joinforces with neighbourhood watches,”says Vos.TygerBurger joined the group of com-
mitted men and women at 07:00 – thecold weather and the light rain weren’tenough to dampen spirits.
Wayne Aldridge, principal inspectorfor law enforcement’s DPU, elaborates:“We identify the hotspots where thestreet people overnight. Then we workthrough the department of social devel-
opment and they will do the social inter-vention. If they refuse to be helped andthere is a by-law offence, then we canintervene.”
According to Aldridge he inspectsvarious areas “almost on a daily basis”.
He recently went on a similar projectin Bothasig, and Richwood and Good-wood are on the horizon as well.
“Policing street people or movingthem around doesn’t work. So now weare focusing on long-term solutions,” headds, before saying that there are far toofew ‘integrated approach’ venturessuch as this one.
Johan van Schalkwyk, law enforce-ment services area manager for thenorth, and Regan Adams, station com-mander at Big Bay law enforcement,both reckon it’s a wonderful initiativeand that it should be done more often.
Adams says: “This will show the pub-lic that the city envisages to serve thepublic effectively. The different role-players will go back from here and planhow to address the issues we identi-fied.”
The drive through the area com-menced at 07:30 and soon about 20 vehi-cles parked near Eskom’s property inBains Way.
Some were surprised by what they en-countered in the far corner, but mostwere fully aware of what to expect.
A small informal community of 10 ormore displaced people were living in ab-ject filth.
They were all still sleeping when thedelegation arrived, but were abruptlyawoken by the call: “Wake up, wake up!You have visitors!”
Dreary heads popped out from under-neath the tents and an adorable puppystarted barking in the crisp air.

Vos sent the company a written complaintthis week which read: “It is imperative thatyou take urgent steps to remove these squat-ters, clear the rubble and bushes, and closethe wall from the N7. All of the above are caus-ing dangers and threats to the communityand home-owners in the vicinity.”
Much is left to do over the vagrancy prob-lem, but innovations such as the one held onSaturday is a step in the right direction.
Cormack concludes: “We are privileged tolive in a suburb and indeed a city where suchdedication is demonstrated.”
Eskom ‘must move vagrants from their land’
The rainy weather wasn’t enough to keep the dedicated officials and officers from doing theirjob.
Twoarmedrobberswerearrest-ed near the N1 City Mall lastweek Friday after they alleged-ly stole R45 000 from a womanin Edgemead.
“The suspects were fleeing fromthe scene of the crime in a ToyotaConquest,” elaborates Capt Fred-erick van Wyk, spokesperson forthe provincial police.
He continues: “At about 10:40,members of the flying squad andcommand centre started chasing asuspicious vehicle.
“The chase ended at the malland then the suspects jumped outof the vehicle and tried to flee thescene on foot.”
One was apparently apprehend-ed right next to the Toyota and theother only managed to get 100 me-tres from the car before he wascaught as well. It was quickly as-certained that the Toyota was re-ported stolen and during thesearch the authorities seized an il-legal firearm – a 9mm pistol.
According to Van Wyk the sus-pects were detained at GoodwoodPolice and appeared in the localmagistrate’s court on Monday thisweek.

Inwoners kla al jare lank oor die stor-tingsterrein en die Stad het onlangs studieslaat doen om te kyk hoe die verkeer, die ge-raas en die stof die gebied beïnvloed. Dieresultate van hierdie studies, asook die im-pak wat die terrein op openbare vervoerhet, het die Stad op ’n ander meer geskikte
terrein laat besluit.Pretorius se moeite in dié saak kan ook
nie onderskat word nie. Ná vele vergade-rings met die gemeenskap en voorstelle aandie subraad, lyk dit asof die Stad uiteinde-lik aandag daaraan gee.
Intussen sal stappe gedoen word om dielasfaktore te verlig. Dit sluit in om die“chipper” (wat gebruik word om die takkete versnipper) slegs gedurende die werks-week binne spesifieke ure te gebruik.
Die stof sal verminder word deur die tak-ke nat te hou. Die grensmuur sal ook ver-hoog word.
’n Openbare vergadering sal ná die skool-vakansie gehou word, waar Pretorius, dieStad se burgemeesterskomiteelid van nuts-dienste, Shehaam Sims, en ander senioramptenare die saak sal bespreek.

A Goodwood Community Policing Forum(CPF) initiative at the New Faith Churchin Goodwood drew various dignitaries tothe event on Sunday, which was organ-ised to show appreciation to “the men andwomen in uniform”.
Among those present were the WesternCape minister of community safety, Dan Pla-to; Goodwood CPF chairperson, Ian Gray;Goodwood police station commander, ColHansia Ashiam; and ward councillors CecileJanse van Rensburg and Richard O’Connell.
“This is a church service to bring specialattention to our men and women in uniform,
to thank them and to pray for them in the allimportant tasks that they so unselfishly dofor the community at large,” says Albert Kro-ne, public relations officer of the local CPF.
Gray elaborates: “United we shall stand!Today, we see a community united behind theSouth African Police Service in the fightagainst crime. We have representatives hereof SAPS, Correctional Services, Metro Traf-fic, Fire and Rescue, even the Navy.
“All these services form part of the commu-nity. They keep us safe and secure – thankyou!”
The local neighbourhood watch also re-ceived glowing praise from Gray and Plato.
Gray continues to explain why this annualCPF event is held in a church when he says:
“In communities, the church in whateverform, plays an integral part. No communitycan ever survive without the church. Wethank New Faith Ministries for making thispossible.”
The CPF secretary sums up the day of ap-
preciation and rejoicing when she concludes:“It reminded us all to give our best in every-thing we do even if we feel that we may notbe repaid or recognised for our effort.
“In the end, it is genuine service in our pro-fession that each one must remember.”

“Think twice before throwing it away.” Thatis the message from James Vos, chairpersonof the subcouncil.
“By recycling and composting, residentscan prevent nearly two kilogrammes of rub-bish per person going to the City of CapeTown’s landfills every day.”
Vos is actively involved organising severalrecycling events in partnership with the city’ssolid waste management department to en-courage home recycling.
According to Vos the municipal drop-offsites throughout the area, namely AkademieStreet in Welgelegen, Orange Street in Tygerd-al and 5th Avenue in Parow have proved to behighly useful.
“We need to do all that we can to reduce theamount of waste we place in our wheelie bins– this will also make our bins less attractive
to the rubbish sifters who descend on us comebin day,” says Vos.
Recycling is not difficult.“All it takes is another domestic swing-top
bin. Place dry waste, such as paper, cardboardand plastic bags, rinsed and dry plastic con-tainers and bottles, glass, and cans, in this re-cycling bin.”
The types of recyclables which can bedropped off at the centres include paper, card-board, most plastics except for PVC, scrapmetal, cans, glass bottles and jars.
He also urges the community to report litte-ring and illegal dumping.
“Provide the registration number of the ve-hicle offloading the waste, and the locationwhere the waste is being dumped,” says Vos.

Nou kan sy oral rondkerjakker.Cecily reken dit was ’n baie be-

For 17-year-old Sasha-Lee Pearce, fashionhas always been “in” – even when she want-ed to be a veterinarian or animator.
The fashion bug bit her 10 years ago, butshe has only recently been bitten by the“stage a fashion show and launch your ownfashion label” bug.
The matric learner from JG Meiring HighSchool launched her own label – Slacs – ata fashion show on Friday 22 June.
According to her mother, Daisy Pearce,about 150 people experienced the memorableevening.
“I could not have been prouder! I couldn’tbelieve it when I saw her designs come tolife ... I was in awe when I saw the dream be-come a reality. It was a wow moment and Iwill never ever forget that day!” she ex-claims.
Slacs is an acronym for “Sexy Like a Choc-olate Strawberry”, so Sasha-Lee always con-sidered this while designing.
The range adhered to the label and the la-bel adhered to a few keywords – colourful,sexy, short, breezy, bold and empowering.
Aneesah Benjamin (18), a model andfriend, says none of Sasha-Lee’s friends hadany idea what to expect.
“I knew she has this weird side to her andknew it wouldn’t be what I expected, butwhen I saw the designs I was dumbstruck!
I didn’t know she had that in her!” she raves.Sasha-Lee always re-designed clothes for
herdollswhenshewasyoung, but itwasonlywhen her aunt, Lynette Bradshaw, assuredher that she had potential that she started tobelieve in herself.
“Now my dream is to be as famous as LouisVuitton, Christian Louboutin and Gucci,”says the assured Goodwood resident.
“So what will be trendy this summer?”asks the journalist as if he knows what he’stalking about. “High-waisted shorts, skirts,and maybe lace,” answers Sasha-Lee.

at people and I felt sorry for them,it’s not to say people are not con-cerned or compassionate, but theydon’t really understand.”
Faranaaz’s reality changed on 23January 2008, a date now engravedon her memory. A heart procedureon her son Ziyaad went horriblywrong and left the then five-year-old with severe cerebral palsy.
Faranaaz recalls, “It was worsethan death for me, that was how Ifelt, because they gave me someoneelse back.” She resigned from herjob and over the past four yearsmost of her life has revolved aroundtaking care of Ziyaad.
About a year ago things started toregress out of nowhere. Ziyaad’smobility slowed down, he couldn’tswallow properly and he developedapnea, where there is an impulsefrom the brain to stop breathing.
Increasing episodes of apnea ledto his readmission to Red Cross. Af-ter two months in hospital, with hisdad at his side 24/7, Ziyaad is nowback at home. His parents want togive him comfort care.
Faranaaz explains, “The doctorsasked me what I think, whether heis regressing towards death, and Isaid, well he’s definitely goingsomewhere and it’s not the positiveway.
“They said whenever we treathim, we’re not healing him, we’rejust intervening with the processthat he will eventually not be hereany more. We’re putting his bodythrough more work, because he has
pushed further than what they ex-pected for his condition.
“He will have no further surgeryas any anaesthetic will be deadly.We decided to give him comfortcare for these last months. ”
The Rinquests are just one of 28families that Iris House Children’sHospice is currently involved with.Iris House is one of this year’s Wantons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert’sbeneficiaries, of which TygerBurg-er is the media sponsor.
Not only do they offer emotionalsupport, but also assist with day today necessities and in Ziyaad’s casea suction machine was donated tohelp keep his airways clear. “WhenI initially spoke to Sue I didn’t knowwhat support there was,” saidFaranaaz.
Founder Sue van der Linde want-ed to raise money to build a conven-tional children’s hospice. However,in order to meet the needs of thechildren and families more effec-tively, the charity has concentratedits efforts firstly on providing carein the families’ own homes.

However, it’s only when we hear of chil-dren “just down the road” who are miss-ing, most probably as a result of social me-dia encounters which lead to face to faceintroductions that we sit up and take stockof our own efforts to avoid this.
Imagine the terror of realising yourchild is missing. After some frantic callsto her friends, you realise that she mightbe trapped in the horrible claws of someshady character on Facebook. The policetell you that she may soon be the victimof human trafficking or prostitution.
The only way parents can try and pro-tect their children is to teach them valuesand set a good example. Then trust that itwas enough for them to make the rightchoices under difficult circumstances.
And when they give in under the pres-sures of peers and bad adults, they shouldknow they can come to their parentswhere they will be loved.

Metal bands will be invadingBuckleys in Edward Street thisweekend for To the Stage Two.
To the Stage is set to become aregular series of events on thenorthern suburbs calendar thanksto Numero Productions.
Alex Toua, from Numero, ex-plains that the concept was startedby Charl Strutt and Neil Schoe-man, who had been hosting rockshows in the area.
Alex, who is friends with Charl,was asked to help them break intoa heavier genre.
Buckleys recently acquired atheir entertainment licence andhosting the event there would helpNumero promote To the Stage andBuckleys as a live entertainmentvenue.
The first To the Stage was hostedin June as a rock event.
The plan is to alternate monthlybetween rock and metal events,giving local bands the opportunityto perform.
TheTo theStage eventnamewaschosen by means of a competition,while their logo was designed bya local art group, City Lights Col-
lective.Paul Bothners has come on
board as a sponsor for the eventsand Mirage Custom Tattoos willbe doing tattoo demonstrations atall the metal events.
Two of the bands performing atTo the Stage Two will be MarchingDead and Suiderbees.
Marching Dead, the brainchildof Igor Crouse, has been goingsince 2007. Their current line-upconsists of Pierre van Niekerk onguitar, Christiaan Blom on bass,Werner von Waltsleben on drumsand Igor on guitar and vocals.
After a short sabbatical when Ig-or was overseas, the band startedhitting stages again at the begin-ning of the year, after performingat Rock the River.
Marching Dead, who have neverreleased any of their music, arehoping to have their debut EP,with the tongue-in-cheek title, TheGreatest Hits, ready for the showon Saturday.
“I think it’s ridiculous thatwe’ve never released anything,”Igor says, pointing out that mostof their fans know their songswell.
Alex points out that MarchingDead have opened a lot of doors in
the metal community since theirconception.
“They kind of set the level atwhich bands are recognised froma professional side,” he says.
Suiderbees is an equally bigname in the metal community,having opened for internationalband, Fleshgod Apocalypse, whenthey toured SA.
The band, who has been togeth-er for about two and a half years,is also busy with its debut album,The Segregation, which they hopeto release in early 2013.
The band is made up of ColeGrainger on drums, Karin Preto-rius on keyboards, Marc Olwageon bass and lead vocals, Divan deKock on lead guitars and backupvocals and Dawie Pretorius onrhythm guitar.
Cole describes their music as “abit of everything”, while Marccalls it: “Epic music with a brutaltwist and a splash of melody”.

The Western Cape Sports School in KuilsRiver will host the championship from to-morrow to 7 July.
“The glory days I refer to were when thelikes of Cape boxing champions such asSkeleton Mboma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Si-baca, Sipho Mange, Chris and BramleyWhiteboy dominated the South African box-ing scene,” said Dr Ivan Meyer, provincialminister of cultural affairs and sport at ame-dia launch last week.
All nine provinces will be represented inthis prestigious event.
“I am particularly pleased that female
boxers will also be participating in thisevent as we have to ensure that greater ac-cess happens so that all boxers, irrespectiveof gender, are given the opportunity to par-ticipate and develop to their full potential.”
This championship is seen as the perfectplatform for the revival of Western Cape andCape Town boxing.
