visiting a friend’s house and while waitingoutside the gate, their dog bit her hand fromthe inside of the palisade fence.Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waiting

in his car, jumped out and he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately,where she received 27 stitches.This happened almost three months ago,

but Joline is still in shock. Not only couldshenotwrite herGr 11 final exam, the injuryhas also left herwith anugly scar. Joline lostfeeling in part of her right hand ... as wellas all her friends.Joline has become a victim in a Facebook

campaign to releaseMilo. In very little time,Milo has gained the support of close to 4 400animal activists worldwide on www.caus-es.com website, after the owner made a pleato release him.Unbridled insults against the Janse van

Rensburg family were rife and on anotherpublic Facebook page of Kruvet AnimalHealth, owner of Milo, Sharné Jordaan, said“Ek sal daai etters sue wat my ‘kind’ weg-neem”.She also posted the cellphone number of

the law enforcement officer in charge of theimpoundment unit, email addresses ofHelen Zille and promised to get the cell-

phone number of Joline’s father so that peo-ple can direct their anger to them in personin order to release Milo.

TraumaOn17December, someoneposted this com-

ment: “This 16-year-old girl must be pun-ished for causing poor Milo all the trauma& suffering!“If it wasn’t for her irresponsible actions

this would never have happened!”The Janse vanRensburg family did not re-

spond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on social me-dia and made copies of everything.In the process they came across two other

people who have been bitten by Milo in thepast and commentsmade by Jordaan on sev-eral occasions prior to this incident, askingadvice about her dog’s aggressive behav-iour.Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’ moth-

er, says they do not want to make a decisionabout the life of the dog.“The lawmust take its course, but the fact

is our child is innocent. She is the one whogot bitten here.“We did not want to do it the media way,

we rely on what’s right. If I take part in thisdebate on social media, people will attackme.”The campaign has also taken a political

turn: “Weare starting a twitter storm tohelpsave Milo. If you are on twitter please tweet@helenzille to send Milo home and get yourfollowers to retweet,” one of the organisersof the campaign posted on the “Causes”web-site.Several people threatened not to vote DA

if Milo was not released.On 13 January, Milo was released and re-

turned to his owner.“Thematter was first brought tomy atten-

tion during middle December. By the timeit was submitted to me there had alreadybeen a lot of water under the bridge and afair amount of tension had arisen as certaincomments had been made on social mediaabout the injured girl,” says Richard Bos-man, head of safety and security for the Cityof Cape Town, who ordered Milo’s release.He says he opened communication with

“Despite all the raised emotions and thepossibility of civil as well as criminal liti-gation, my sole focus was to consider therequest by the owner of the dog to not haveit destroyed. Representations in this re-gard were made to me by Ms Jordaan’s at-torneys, which I provided to the complai-nant’s father to get his view. He indicatedin an email that this was not his businessand that the decision was mine to make,”Bosman says.

He added that Jordaan had compliedwith the request to fence in the propertyproperly and to have the bell, which wason the inside of the fence, moved. He sayshis decision was also influenced by the factthat the incident had not happened on a pu-blic road and that Joline did not raise anobjection to having the dog released.

“In addition the complainant had alrea-dy laid criminal charges at the policewhich is currently under investigation.My decision did not and cannot impact uponand criminal or civil litigation the partywishes to institute. In terms of the by-lawthe magistrate still has the authority to or-der the destruction of the dog.

“In terms of the other complaints, this hadhappened some time before and none of thecomplainants had made personal contact

with me on the matter,” Bosman said in astatement.

Shortly after Milo’s release, Sharne Jor-daan posted on the Facebook page of K9 Obe-dience training centre and kennels: “I wasthinking for a while now to take my dog forthe on-board training classes (four-weekcourse) he has never been trained before

and is three years four months old on 5 Ja-nuary. He’s a Dalmation cross labradorbreed and very clever, loves food, treats,toys, and especially the water (swimming),he can be a bit aggressive only sometimes,but I feel the obedience training will do Milogood.

The City of Cape Town’s ElectricityServices Department has commencedan end-of-life replacement project forelectricity meters.

This project will initially focus onend-of-life prepayment meters but willbe expanded later to replace some ofthe older credit meters in the GreaterCape Town area. Eskom supply areasare not included in this project.

The design life of prepayment me-ters is approximately 20 years and thefield failures of these older metershave reached the stage where plannedreplacement is required. Approxi-mately 10 % of prepayment meterscurrently qualify for replacement andthe areas initially targeted will bethose where the density of older me-ters is the highest.

The city has appointed Elex Khanyi-sa to do these replacements over thenext three years.

If a meter needs to be replaced, a no-tice will be delivered to the premisesto request an appointment for meterreplacement. Afresh year means new technology tolook forward to in 2014. The annual In-ternational Consumer Electronics

Show (CES) was held in Las Vegas earlierthis month and provided great insight intowhat to expect, technology-wise, this year.Some products might, however, not beavailable in South Africa for a while.

Some predictions for this year on thetechnology front, were explained in a mediarelease from Dial a Nerd, a local IT manage-ment service provider.

Micropayment applications, they say,which will allow a variety of payment solu-tions to talk to each other so that physicalmoney doesn’t need to change hands is saidto expand in South Africa this year.

Developments in television, physicalones as well as in telecommunications, arebeing spoken about. It looks like Vodacomwill formally bid to buy Neotel and a dealbetween Telkom and MTN should be final-ised this year. Although, a Telkom Mobile,MTN arrangement could be more compli-cated than a Vodacom and Neotel one.

3D printingOther trends include 3D printing, which

will eventually allow users to print out 3Dobjects such as shoes, accessories and toysfrom home. It sounds a bit sci-fi, as NASAhas sent these printers to space in order toreplace minor parts (which is far easierthan having the parts shipped there), butapparently 3D printers have been aroundfor 25 years, and now due to technological

improvements and reduced costs they arebecoming more popular.

“3D printers will be in your house like re-frigerators, TVs and microwaves,” musicstar will.i.am said at the event. AndrewBoggeri, owner of a Las Vegas companycalled Full Spectrum Laser, mentioned astudy indicating that the average US homecould save up to $2 000 (about R21 700) annu-ally, by printing, instead of replacing anumber of the 27 commonly broken house-hold items.

According to Dial a Nerd, the biggest buzzat the consumer electronics show seemed tobe around wearable technology.

three categories: glasses, notifiers andtrackers. Most of us know about GoogleGlass by now: a wearable computer in theform of a pair of glasses. The glasses are ex-pected to go on sale some time this year forabout $500 (about R5 400) and experts arepredicting that four million “smartglasses”will be sold.

These amazing glasses are even said totransform the way surgery is performed asdoctors are now using them in the operat-ing room. The rough and tumble of life is all part ofa days work for Muhidinsalum “Muhidin”Adla.During the week and weekends he per-

forms as an acrobat. His dream however isto someday start his veryowncircus school.Despite not having a fixed income Adla

(27), a professional acrobat who is original-ly from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania says hewill continue to perform as a street artistand teach children in the impoverishedWesbank to realise this life-long dream.Apart from owning a school he also

dreams about one day performing for theworld famous Cirque du Soleil. “In myheart I dream about Cirque du Soleil,” hesaid.Muhidin is currently part of the group

called Mambo Jambo. He often trains withhis four friends at theMulti Purpose Centrein Wesbank and performs during the weekand over the weekends in Sea Point, CampsBay and the V&A Waterfront.Muhidin trained as an acrobat since the

age of seven.He immigrated to South Africa five years

ago.“I came to South Africa to work. I only

work as an acrobat and have been doing so

for many years now,” he said.Muhidin has over the years also worked

for an international German circus produc-tion called Africa! Africa! and receivedtraining inChinawherehe stayed for an en-tire year.“I started working for Africa! Africa! at

age 16 years. They saw me perform in thestreets,” he said.Muhidin started performing in the

streets of Tanzania to earn money for hisparents.“My mother was unemployed and my fa-

ther used to sell clothes.”Muhidin started Mambo Jambo in 2013

with four friends. The group practises onMondays and Tuesdays at the Multi Pur-pose Centre in Wesbank. Muhudin alsotrains little children in the area without re-ceiving payment.“The training is a lot of hard work. We

practise a lot.“We look on the internet for new ideas,

but often also come up with our own,” hesaid.The most difficult trick to perform, hesays, is standing on someone’s head balanc-ing his body with only one hand.“It took me two years before I was able

to do that.Often when I train I always say‘no pain no gain’,” he said.Muhidin and his group can earn between

R1 000 and R5 000 a day.

Aprobewas recently launched into small butirregular deductions made from pensionerswho drew their old age grants at Pick n Paypay points in December.This paypoint service was made available

to all social grant beneficiaries in April lastyear, by means of their Sassa cards, whichmeans they avoid standing in long queuesfor hours at Sassa paypoints each month.During December several pensioners in

the Brackenfell/Kraaifontein area werecharged additional fees ranging in amountbetween R2 and R10, when withdrawingtheir pensions at Pick n Pay in Cape Gate.“This is the first time a fee was charged,

before it was free.

“And why was the fee not the same acrossthe board? Pick n Pay had a notice up thatall Sassa transactions were free and nowthey are charging!” said one of the pension-ers* TygerBurger spoke to.When this particular pensioner contacted

the Sassa call centre, she was advised by aconsultant that the matter was under inves-tigation.On enquiry, Jonathan Ackerman, direc-

tor of customer services at Pick n Pay, con-firmed that the store does not charge any feefor the withdrawal of Sassa grant payments.“We have consulted with Sassa and it ap-

pears that some Sassa transactions mayhave incurred transaction fees... Pick n Payconsiders the payment of social grants as aservice to our communities and does notprofit from it at all,” he told TygerBurger.

He referred customers who found theyhave been charged a transaction fee to theSassa call centre.ShivaniWahab, spokesper-son for Sassa also confirmed that thereshould be no transaction fees charged whenbeneficiaries access their social grants viaapproved merchants such as Pick n Pay.“Transaction fees apply only in the case

of ATM withdrawals, where standard ATMrates apply,” she said.“We will have to take the matter up with

CPS (Cash Paymaster Services) who is con-tracted to Sassa for the payment of socialgrants, for further investigation.”It is not certain yet what the outcome of

this investigation is, but TygerBurger couldestablish that no additional deductionsweremade from the pensioners in question dur-ing January.

ey is still on my account but the Pick n Paysystemshowsnothing,” she said onMonday.CPS is a business unit of global company

ice provider, have listed three of the biggestscams, which will help you stay ahead ofthe scammers and allow you to enjoy youronline experience with peace of mind.

Malicious linksThe easiest way to be targeted is via an

email, text or Facebook post, offering agreat deal. “Generally, don’t click on a linkfrom someone you don’t know as it couldbe spyware or a malicious program de-signed to capture passwords and other per-sonal information,” warns Leaine Brebber,head of communications at Dial a Nerd.If you didn’t remember entering a compe-

tition or ordering a package, it is probablya scam. If the deal is too amazing to be true,it’s probably a scam.Suchas the “Get aFreeR500 Woolworths or Pick n Pay Gift Cardby sharing the link on your Facebook page”scam.“Always check the source of the link –

even if it’s from someone you know. Ascammer couldhavehijacked their accountand sent it on their behalf,” she says.Phony gift card offers come in the form

of an email, text message or Facebook postsaying that you’ve won a prize or thatyou’ve qualified for a massive discount orsum of money on a gift card. You are thenrequired to enter extensive personal infor-mation in order to receive it or share thelink to your friends.“Don’t do it! The more personal informa-

tion they have, the easier it will be to getinto your bank account, for example.“Ignore links offering ridiculous dis-

counts and steer clear of sites that offer gift

cards at unheard of prices,” she continues.“About unknown sites advertising unbe-

lievable offers: You know the saying, “if itsounds too good to be true, it probably is”?This is the general rule when it comes toscams.”Some sites do offer amazing deals, like

Groupon and Superbalist (Citymob), butit’s the unknown sites that you need towatch out for. The oneswith strangely speltnames or the ones offeringhighly sought af-ter items like iPads and iPhones at abnor-mally low prices.Be very wary when entering your credit

card details onto unknown sites and makesure that the site is secure: Theweb addressshould begin with https:// instead of http://. The “s” means that it is secure. “We rec-ommend using a separate card for onlinepurchases and setting your limits as low aspossible, so that if your details are stolen,the damage will be minimal. It’s also advis-able not to save any of your credit card de-tails on a site for future purchases,” Leaineadvises.Dubious websites can also pull you in by

offering vouchers for popular gifts. If youhave to enter a lot of personal informationto get the voucher, the warning bells inyour head should start to sound.If you are required to sign up to the ac-

count to purchase, using a password youhaven’t used for anything else, is a goodidea.

online scam, immediately run a virus scan.Mobile phones and tablets aren’t immuneto scamware, so this applies to all devices.“We recommend using ESET NOD32 fordesktop and mobile security.”

Holiday a time for vandalism

The Goodwood police made two arrests thisweek after members of the public notifiedthem of suspicious behaviour.On Monday 13 January, around lunch-

time, a resident at Arcadia Park, Goodwoodwas in his room when he saw an unknownmale through his window, carrying a braaistand. This man then threw the braai overthe fence and then also jumped over.The resident immediately informed the

police as well as the security guards at thecomplex.Upon realising that he has been seen, the

suspect put the braai in a bin, and went tohide in a nearby bush. This is where he was

arrested by Constable Tshediso Mfunda ofthe Goodwood police. He appeared in theGoodwood Magistrate’s Court on chargesof theft.A production manager of a printing

business inGoodwood, called the police onTuesday 14 January after he noticed unu-sual activity of his company’s deliverybakkie.TheGoodwood police says themanwent

to investigate what the driver was up towhen he did not leave the premises to dodeliveries, but went to the store room instead. There he found the driver, storemanager and assistant loading aluminium

plate sheets.When the suspects saw him they drove

away. He immediately informed Goodwoodpolice and two suspects were arrested on thescene by Constable Vivian Fortuin.The third suspect was later arrested at his

house by DetectiveWarrant Officer RichardBotto.They all appeared at Goodwood Magis-

“I am on my nerves,” says Emilio de Sousa,who has been a fearless skipper for 61 years.He is a healthy man, but the interview hashim trembling. “What do you want to talkabout?”Emilio (93) and Justina de Sousa (89) were

married in Lisbon, Portugal on 26 December1943. Today, they are still holding hands onthe couch of their daughter Maria Wilson’shouse in Welgelegen, where they stay.On 26 December 2013, they had been mar-

ried for 70 years. They celebrated it at aBlou-bergstrand restaurant with a sea view with15 familymembers: children, grandchildrenand great-grandchildren.“I come from a small village north of Lis-

bon. When I was 17, my father fell ill and wehad to move to the city. The next thing Iknow, we were living next to ’Tina. She was13 then, andwe started lookingat eachother.Two years later, I asked her father permis-sion to talk to her. He said no. EventuallyI did talk to her, and my future father in lawbecame one ofmy best friends,” says Emilio.Emilio and Justina were married when

she was 19 and he 22.“We had about 40 guests at our wedding,”

says Justina. “They were mostly family. Inthose times we did not have big weddings,the money was not so much.”Eight days after the wedding, Emilio had

to go to sea to further his training as an ap-prentice officer on passenger liners.Justina spent her time working on her

trousseau and making dresses. “I sewed alot. I had a beautiful trousseau. I did all theembroidery myself.” She carried on doingneedlework for many years, until in recentyears shewas unable to continue, due to fail-ing health.They had two children, a daughter and a

son, born inPortugal and in 1966 theymoved

to Cape Town. They moved around a lotthrough the years, due to Emilio’s work com-mitments. They stayed for a number of yearsin Monte Vista and Mossel Bay and now re-side in Welgelegen with their daughter, Mar-ia.Their son, Jacinto, went back to Lisbon as

an adult to follow amarine career, and daugh-terMaria studied at UCT and became amusicteacher in Pinelands for many years.TheDeSousa family has a longhistorywith

Southern Africa. On 11 August 1916, the fa-mous Cutty Sark, one of the last sailing ships

to be built before steam ships were intro-duced to the world, suffered a storm inAgulhas, lost a mast and had to be towedto Cape Town for repairs. The shipwas un-der command of Emilio’s uncle, FredericoViera de Sousa.Emilio’s father, Jacinto Viera de Sousa,

who was a chief engineer in shipping,moved to Maputo to settle in the shippingrepair business in 1915. After World WarII, the family went back to Portugal.Throughouther life, Justinahad toman-

age without her husband for long periodswhile he was at sea, but her children,grandchildren and later great-grandchil-dren kept her busy. Emilio only retiredwhen he was 80.She visited Portugal a few times, and

once her mother, Clotilde da Silva, cameto Cape Town for a four month visit, afterJustina’s father, Arturda Purificazzo died.“After the four months, my mother wentback to Portugal and died too, within amonth.

“She missed my father too much.“They were very close. My father was a

lieutenant in the navy, a fantastic man. Andmy mother was a fantastic mother as well,”says Justina.They shy away from talking about them-

selves, but Emilio is keen to boast about hisgrandfather who once received a letter fromthe Duke of Braganza in Portugal. “Mygrandfather, captain Antonio José de Sousa,once took the prince and princess of Portu-gal on a boat trip out of Lisbon. The princess’hat blewoff andmygrandfather gave her hiscaptain’s cap.“The ship was under his command. The

prince wrote him a letter of thanks after-wards,” he says, and shows me the letter,written in black ink on yellowed paper in aneat, Portuguese hand.“Whenever people have asked Emilio and

Tina how they have managed to stay mar-ried for so long, they always reply that everynight they kiss each other good night, nomatter what,” says their granddaughter.

A total of 70 lights are installed at a costclose to R800 000 on the northern side of Plat-tekloof Road bordering Bothasig.

“There is a widely held belief that the im-provement of street lightingwill reducebothcrime and fear of crime. Improved visibility,it is believed, will increase the possibilitiesfor identification and apprehension of crim-inals and hence deter the perpetration of

criminal acts, while also providing reas-surance to those people who are fearful forpersonal safety in public places,” saysward councillor James Vos.

The municipality is now also introduc-ing an LED lighting pilot programme inconjunction with this project. LED lightswill be installed in both old and new streetlights in Bothasig. The performance ofthese lightswill bemonitored and evaluat-ed to decide if high intensity dischargelamps used in LED lighting, are economi-

cally viable.“The pilot areaswere chosen as being readi-

ly accessible formonitoring and evaluation ofthe installations during the pilot study, lessprone to vandalism (which would impact onthe performance assessment) and, in some ofthe areas, the street lighting equipment is inneed of replacement,” says Vos.

“Energy efficiency has become increasing-ly important to both property owners and ten-ants on account of South Africa’s rising elec-tricity tariffs and the possible medium-term

shortage of electricity. From testing the waters to jumping in,singer/songwriter, Daniel Crossing iscelebrating his first new year as a full-

time artist.With a string of interviews and songs be-

ing playlisted on local radio stations, DanielCrossing is hard at work promoting his mu-sic.“The last album that I wrote is a rock al-

bum,” Daniel explains, referring to his sev-en trackalbum,BetweenBorders andAngels.He prefers to describe his music as soul

rock though. “More soulful than anythingelse,” he adds.“Lyrics are very important to me and it’s

about expressing themeaning of those lyricsto the person listening,” Daniel says of hismusic.“I think the most significant event in my

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began.He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor,which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music.It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

doors in 2009 in KwaZulu-Natal, followingthe brutal gang rape of Jes Foord by fourmen.Jes’s aimwas to start an organisation that

would improve the compassionate treat-ment of rape survivors at each step in theprocess, to restore lives after rape and to ed-ucate people about the realities of rape inSouth Africa.The Foundation does this by offering free

ongoing counselling to rape survivors,founding Rape Crisis Care Centres wherevictims receive medical treatment and trau-ma counselling free of charge. In addition,they provide motivational talks to schools,corporates and community groups, stress-

ing rape prevention and awareness.“The Handbag Project gives handbags full

of much-needed supplies to rape victims ata critical point in their journey to becominga survivor. Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada.It all startedwayback in 1978,whereChar-

laine, then a mere five years old, startedswinging clubs at theDurbanville Golf Club.

Durbanville“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along toDurbanvilleGolf Clubwheneverhe would play. I used to take him on at chip-ping and putting contests all the time.“I have such incrediblememories of grow-

ing up playing golf at Durbanville and play-ing with the ladies’ section there. I won theLadies Club Championship twice.“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as a jun-ior and I also captained the Fairmont HighSchool golf team,”Charlaine reflected on the

good old days. She alsowon thePrenticeCupfor u-21 females in WP.After her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dreamof playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship to

Longwood College in Virginia and that iswhere my “career” began. I had a great col-lege playing career – I won the NationalChampionship for Division II schools 3times while at college and in my senior year1995 I won three major awards – VirginiaWomen Athlete of the Year, Honda Awardfor Division II Athlete of the year and To-day’s Top Eight Award (highest honour thatthe NCAA awards to college athletes),” saidCharlaine.
