’n Kunstenaar van Goodwood droomdaarvan om sy eie kunsakademie testig sodat ander mense ook kan deel

in die tegniek wat hy vervolmaak het.Peter van der Vindt (48) sê hy was altyd

lief vir die kunste, maar het twee jaar gelede’n sketstegniek ontwikkel wat hom help omlewensgetroue sketse van mense, diere enlandskappe te maak.

Potlood“Ek het besluit om nie meer met ’n potlood

nie, maar met ’n balpuntpen te begin skets

en dit het my werk verbeter,” sê Peter.Volgens hom word sy liefde vir skets net

oorskadu deur sy passie om ander te leer.“Ek het nou twee mense wat ek oplei, maarek dink ek kan baie meer hanteer. My droomis om iewers hier in Goodwood of Bellville’n akademie te begin sodat ek mense van alleouderdomme kan leer hoe om my tegniek tegebruik. Dit is nie ’n ingewikkelde prosesnie, maar as iemand ’n passie het vir kunssal daardie persoon dit kan bemeester.”

Hy het ’n boek saamgestel met meer as 300illustrasies, wat hy hoop om eendag uit tegee. “Ek was al by ’n paar uitgewers en ditlyk nogal of daar belangstelling is. Een ouhet vir my gesê hy dink die boek moet in sko-le gebruik word. ’n Boek is iets wat jong kun-stenaars kan gebruik as hulle nie by my kanuitkom nie. Ek verduidelik stap vir stap hoeom suksesvolle sketse te maak.”

TroeteldierPeter doen graag profielsketse van mense.

“Mense bring gewoonlik foto’s van geliefdesof familie-foto’s, wat ek dan skets. In baie ge-valle is die geliefde die gesin se troeteldier,”lag Peter.

Donovan Pretorius, ’n weldoener wat Pe-ter onlangs ontmoet het en watTygerBurgervan sy talent vertel het, sê hy was verstomtoe hy die werke sien. “Ek kon nie glo watek sien sien nie. Several so-called crowbar gangs havebeen active across themetropole, withthe most recent case taking place in

Welgelegen on 25 September. A red Volks-wagen Golf 5 with tinted windows was spot-ted around midday outside a house inKwarts Street. According to a Tygerburgerreader, he believes the gangs were at workbecause the front door of thehousehadbeenforced open with a crowbar.He says he saw that the Golf had tinted

windows and four well-dressed males wereseen inside. “Be aware that they also usescouts on foot,” he warned.According to W/O Jacques Mostert,

spokesperson for the Parow police, a policemember residing in Avondale was also avictim of a similar burglary last week whe-re an instrument similar to a crowbar hadbeen used to gain access to the house.The getaway car was a white BMW with

yellow number plates.Mostert says the crowbar method is not

unique, nor confined to a specific area. Ho-wever, he has noticed some similarities inthe modus operandi.“Access is gained to the properties via

doors being forced openwith various heavyitems including crowbars, hence the crow-bar gang tag.“According topolice information, theper-

petrators are usually smartly dressed andmove in the areas with types of vehicleswhich would not appear suspicious or lookout of place.“Reports have been received where Au-

dis, BMWs and other newmodels have beenused. Although property taken may vary, itseems as if flatscreen TVs, jewellery, cell-phones, cash and laptop computers are theitems normally targeted.”Mostert says he would not refer to this

trend as organised crime.

“These are not syndicates, rather profes-sional burglars, because they know whatthey want,” he says.A similar incidentwas reported earlier in

September in Plattekloof Glen. A securitycompany received an alarm activation at20:16 at a house inTugela circle. The respon-se officer arrived four minutes later andsaw that the front door had been forcedopen. This time a safe had been broken openand one firearm and some small items werestolen.According to the security company, a

neighbour’s CCTV footage showed aMerce-des Benz or a BMW leaving the premises.Nobody was caught. Another incident oc-

cured on 25 September, this time in MonteVista, where an armed response officerspotted a suspicious-looking black Audiaround 15:00 on the corner of Camoens roadand Monte Vista boulevard. He saw the carwas occupied by two men. He called forback-up and it was ascertained that the twomen were convicted of house breaking butwere out on bail. The vehicle was searchedand a number of tools were found inside.

The security company claims that this isthe same black Audi that has been linkedto burgaries over the last few weeks. Thetwo suspects were taken to the Goodwoodpolice station for further investigation, butaccording to the armed response report, we-re released later that day.Althoughnotmanyof the suspected crow-

bar gang members have been arrested, foursuspects were caught redhanded trying tobreak into a house inHambleyRoad, Lange-berg Ridge two weeks ago (“Crowbar bur-glars caught in Langeberg Ridge”, www.ty-gerburger.co.za, 16 September).TygerBurger reported that Lieutenant

Colonel André Traut, provincial police spo-kesman said the suspects used a crowbar toenter the premises.“While driving aroundin theneighbourhoodwith aMercedesBenzthat was stolen in Bothasig earlier thismonth, the suspects were spotted by alertpolice members who kept them under ob-servation. They were approached as theymade their attempt to enter the premises,but fled the scene upon the arrival of the po-lice. “After a brief pursuit, the suspects col-lided with a vehicle and were arrested,”Traut said.According to the latest national crime sta-

tistics, burglaries at residential premises inParow have doubled since five years ago.For the period fromMarch 2013 to February2014 there were more than 1000 reported ca-ses. In Bellville this number has increasedfrom around 900 in 2009 to 1 200 in the 2014financial year.“Members of the public are requested to

bevigilant regardingpeoplemovingaroundin their residential areas and to report any-thing out of the ordinary to the police, secu-rity companies, neighbours and neighbour-hood watches. Residents should also beaware of the fact that if they watch televisi-on at night without closing the curtains, itmakes it very easy for prospective burglarsto see in.”

To mark Heritage Day, Women in Lea-dership (WiL), a non-governmental or-ganisation in Elsies River, hosted a wo-

men’s empowerment conference to comme-morate the heroines of the past.

Women from Eerste River, Belhar, Bellvil-le, Delft, Mfuleni and even from as far as At-lantis converged at the St Faith’s Church inElsies River for the conference under thetheme: “20 years of democracy and women’sempowerment.”A host of guest speakers ad-dressed the gathering about law and socialjustice, gender equality, food security andsafety at schools among other topics.

There was also a strong focus on empowe-ring women so they in turn can empowertheir communities. One of the guest spea-kers, Western Cape Regional Head of the De-

partment of Justice and Constitutional Deve-lopment,AdvocateHishaamMohamed, spokeabout women, the law and social justice. Mo-hamed said it is important for women to re-flect on where they come from in order to mo-ve forward.

Continuing to fight for what’s right“We are a country with a great story to tell,

a story of struggle and victory and a commit-ment to work together to foster nation-buil-ding and social cohesion,” said Mohamed.

He brought to attention the struggles wo-men faced in 1954, when hundreds marchedin Pretoria in protest against pass laws. “Tho-se women were not only fighting for politicalemancipation but economic empowerment,equal representation, access to justice and

land rights as articulated in the Women’sCharter of 1954 and reiterated in the 1994Women’s Charter for Effective Equality.The right to employment with equal payand possibilities of promotion in all sphe-res of work, equal rights in relation to pro-perty, land rights, and the removal of alllaws and customs that denied women suchequality. [The Charter] further demandedpaid maternity leave for women, childcarefor working mothers and free and compul-sory education for all South African child-ren.”

Mohamed said just last month the Justi-ce Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS)cluster engaged with thousands of womenfrom across the Western Cape during theirWomen’s Month programme. “Women ma-de their voicesheardon the challenges thatwomen still face today.

“Through our various interactions withNGOs at workshops and community imbi-zos the message received through the inte-raction with the community was clear: de-faulters of child maintenance must bebrought to book.

Still have a long way to go“We were also informed that the reasons

for the high withdrawal rate of domesticviolence protection order applications we-re because many women, particularlysingle mothers, feared further abuse at thehands of the abuser on whom they are fi-nancially dependent.”

However, Mohamed said two decades af-ter South Africa’s first democratic electi-on, therehas beenamarked increase in therepresentation of women in Parliamentand government and the private sector be-cause of the unprecedented body of lawsand policies that have been introduced.“As we speak today women judges consti-tute about 30% of all judges, nationally.“Women also make up about 41% of the to-tal magistracy and are also represented in

the Judicial Service Commission and theMagistrates’ Commission.

But he added that when it comes to womenin management, we still have a long way togo both in the public and private sectors.

Doctor Wallace Mgoqi, Commissioner atthe Commission for Gender Equality, saysthe rights of women need to be respected andthat gender equality needs to be maintained.“We need to strive towards a society that isfree from all forms of oppression,” Mgoqisaid.

Women in Leadership project coordina-tor, Matilda Vantura said she was gratefulfor the government and the private sector’sparticipation in the event and looked for-ward to a successful working relationshipwith all the stakeholders in the future.

“Dit was reg agter ons huis. Ons moesdoen wat ons kon!” sê sy.

Sy en die buurman het die vuur geblusgekry nog voor die brandweer opgedaag heten op die ou end was daar gelukkig geenskade aan enigeen van hul huise nie.

“Ons huis is in die laaste ry huise vanRichwood. Langs ons is dit net veld. Daarword omtent nooit skoongemaak nie.

“Die bosse staan hoog en dit is beslis ’nbrandgevaar. En dit is ’n gewilde plek virrommelstrooiers. Ek dink ook mense kanmaklik daar wegkruip.”

Sy sê noudat dit somer word, is sy ookbang vir onwelkome besoekers soos slange.

A man is behind bars after he was pointedout in court by his partner in crime.

On Monday 22 September a complainantwas robbed at gunpoint. Three suspects in

a Toyota Corolla threatened the complainantwith a firearm and took R30 000 in cash. Thesuspects then fled the scene in the Corolla.

According to W/O Wayne Theunis, police

spokesperson, members of the GoodwoodCrime Prevention unit followed up on in-formation and traced the Corolla to an ad-dress in Swellendam. “The officers foundone suspect with the Corolla. The 25-year-old suspect appeared in the Goodwood Ma-gistrate’s Court on Thursday 25 Septem-ber,” says Theunis.

At court a second suspectwaspointed outby the complainant and was arrestedforthwith. On Sunday 21 Septemberanother not so clever suspect was arrestedfor armed robbery after knocking at the

door of an off-duty cop.At about 10:00 the complainantwas robbed

at gunpoint of his belongings inVoortrekkerRoad inGoodwood.Hewenthomeandrepor-ted the mugging to his neighbour, W/O Tre-vor Vester, who was on leave. Vester imme-diately went looking for the suspect. Accor-ding to eyewitnesses the suspect fled toThornton. At about 12:00, Vester found andarrested the suspect where he was hiding ina sewerage pipe.The 30-year-old suspect ap-peared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Courton a charge of armed robbery.

The Milnerton Old Boys are keen to retaintheir title at this year’s Old Boys annualreunion tournament.

The rugby tournament is set to take placeat Milnerton High School on Saturday 11October from 10:00.

Milnerton Old Boys, who have won thetournament for each of the four years ofits existence, will be playing against the oldboys of SACS, Table View and Bosmans-dam.

An exciting day is on the cards with jum-ping castles for children and food and drinkon sale. The Old Boys tournament is an op-

portunity for men to put aside the serious-ness of club rugby and get together withtheir old schoolmates. While it is fiercelycompetitive on the field, everyone walks offthe field as friends. Most of the players haveeither played against each other or witheach other at club level and organisers sayit’s a perfect opportunity to put on theirschool jerseys for their school.

There are players of all levels that playfor the Old Boys teams. Some of the playersthrow on a jersey once a year for this tour-nament, while the others end their club sea-son with a more social event.

The City of Cape Town plans to spendmore than R5 million on repairing andreplacing sewerage pipes in Raven-

smead, Goodwood and Ruyterwacht this fi-nancial year.

Clive Justus, chairperson of sub council4 addressed the subcouncil at their monthlymeeting recently to this effect.

He said almost 7km of sewerage pipelineinRavensmead is to be cleanedof debris, fatsand sand and CCTV cameras will be passedthrough the pipes to check their condition.If the cameras pick up that the pipes showany signs of failure, they will be replaced.

The 1.5km long sewerage line in Steward

Street, Goodwood and the 440mcast iron andclay sewer pipes in Ruyterwacht will also bereplacedwithmore durable high density po-ly-ethylene (HDPE) pipes.

Ensuring reliable energy supplyJustus confirmed that almost 2km of wa-

ter piping, to the value of R2.1 million, is tobe replaced in Orchid Street, Smart Street,Stewart Street, Botha Street, De Wet StreetandWallace Street inGoodwood andMarketStreet in Parow Valley.

The final phase of themidblockwater pipereplacement project, which covers 100 pro-perties in Ruyterwacht, will result in a com-pletely new water network for this area.

The operational budget for the current fi-nancial year,which includes repair,mainte-nance and emergency interventions for thedistrict, amounts to R97 million.

The first phase of amulti-year, R90millionelectricity substation capacity upgrade andrefurbishment, together with new oil-filledcabling, is expected to commence in EppingIndustria 2 soon.

“This capital injectionwill ensure that theelectricity supply to the industrial area andthe surrounding residential areas will re-main reliable,” said Justus.

He reported that layingprevious overheadelectricity cabling and the provision of newelectricity kiosks in Goodwood and Parowis proceeding.

“Street lights will be provided in ElsburyWay, Matroosfontein. This was an initiativeof the Matroosfontein Community Policing-Forum as they were concerned about thevulnerable elderly citizens living in ElsburyWay.”

Tarring the wayNumerous traffic calming measures in

Ruyterwacht will be concluded by middleDecember.

Ten homes in Bishop Lavis (Ward 30) willhave ceilings installed at a value of R30 000per house.

“Paulus Street in Valhalla Park is riddledwith potholes andwill be resurfaced. The pa-vements will also be tarred,” Justus said.

onal Super Series at Killarney on Saturday.During the first lap, 15-year-old Sheldon

van der Linde moved up two places intofourth place behind Daniel Rowe, Shaun LaReservee and Dewald Brummer.

Brummer then took over the lead until hewas passed by Rowe on the penultimate lap.Although Van der Linde made it into thirdplace, he was less than half a second behindthe winner when they crossed the line.

Behind them, no concessions were madefor “ladies first” as Andrea Bate and TasminPepper battled it out before finishing ameri-torious sixth and seventh.

Van der Linde made no mistake in the se-cond race that he (just) won from Brummerand Pepper. Masters Class leader MatthewHodges didwell to finish fourth overall afterrolling his car onto its side during the firstrace.

High school cyclists contend for top positionsFollowing an exciting 2014 season of fiercecompetition, four schools have been selectedto represent the Western Cape in the upco-ming Spur School 2014 national league fi-nals. ParelValleiHighSchool is in first placewith a total of 1 178 points, followed by DFMalan in a close second with 1 139 points,Paul Roos Gimnasium is third with 1 005points and Montana High School camefourth with 1 004 points.

The cream of high school mountain bikeriders from across South Africa, Namibiaand Zimbabwe will take to the track at Bek-ker School in Magaliesburg for the finalsnext weekend (4-5 October).

With more than 40 schools vying for thecoveted floating trophy, fierce racing is ex-pected in all three categories – boys, girlsandmixed. Amaximum of 12 riders are allo-wed per teamwith points allocated to the top
