Call for residents to take to the streets ‘to get our streets back’GARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

Concerned about crime? Take to the streetsin Bellville South on Saturday 6 February.Heading this call is David Sias, chairper-

son of the Bellville South Community Polic-ing Forum (CPF).“Enough is enough! Our community in

Bellville South will not be held hostage bycriminals,” he said. The motivation for this initiative follows

several brutal murders of opposing gangmembers in Bellville South in the past fewmonths and reports that gang violenceerupted in turf wars where several drughouses and scores of illegal shebeens flour-ish.Sias said that too many community mem-

bers said they live in fear.“This week the CPF put out the call for

mass community mobilisation, calling forsupport from all community organisations, including churches, with strong actionagainst gangsterism and drugs in the Bell-ville South policing area.“Gang violence erupted a few months ago

in the area, where several young men be-longing toopposinggangswerebrutally shotand killed in what appears to be revenge at-tacks.”Sias added that theCPFhad spoken to resi-

dents who did not want to be named aboutthe fear that has gripped the community.“We stay indoors after dark. We do not al-

low our children out of the house after theycome from school.“The gangsters have guns and at night we

can hear the gunfire. Sometimes there areshootings in the early mornings too. Wewant this to stop.Wewant our streets backand we will send a strong message to thesethugs,” said a mother of three.“The CPF will work closely with the po-

lice and other law enforcement agencies tosqueeze these criminal elements out ofBellville South,” continued Sias.“We request and call upon all organisa-

tions, churches and community membersto join us in making Bellville South a saferplace for all to work and live.“We also call on all citizens to come for-

ward with and give the police informationon any criminal activities. The people ofBellville South must send a clear messageto the criminals that their time is up.”The march on Saturday 6 February will

start in Iscor Street at noon, ending in FrankLouwParkafterwinding through the streetsin the area.V You can sms or whatsapp your support for themarch to 073 3152 128.

‘N1 Stad moet sysekerheid opknap’BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

DieMTN-winkel se deure is sedert Sondag

’nWerknemerby ’nna-bygeleë winkel het by navraag gesê MTNgaan vandag weer oopmaak.Die sentrumbestuur het teen druktyd nie

op navrae gereageer nie.

Thieves were thwarted when they could notget away with this stack of decoders thatwas all ready for their getaway.

Burglars left empty handedafter quick police reactionThieves were thwarted when Bishop La-vis police responded to a call at a localmall on Friday.Officers were patrolling the street at

about 00:45 when they were notified of analarm going off at Pep Stores in the mallin Charlesville.CaptainMarie Louw, Communications

officer at Bishop Lavis, said that whenthey arrived at the premises, everythinglooked in order, but they were deter-mined to make sure everything was as itseemed.“The officers then saw that an exit door

of the centre was standing open. Furtherinvestigation revealed that the padlock ofthe big sliding gate at the back wassnapped.“Further investigation revealed bags

and boxes in a passage at the back of themall that the thieves were planning tosteal.”The officers called for backup with the

Dog Unit assisting the officers. The following search revealed three se-

curity guards handcuffed in the securityoffice and the door to Pep Stores wideopen.Unfortunately the suspects had already

fled the scene and police are still investi-gating.

With 2016 in full swing and a new gen-eration entering the educationalstream, parents have a part to play

in motivating the new learners.Helping parents establish a regular read-

ing routine with their children, and renew-ing their own commitment to root a cultureof reading, is Nal’ibali, the national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, that has issued its2016 Story Power Promise.

Designed as a commitment pledge for bothparents and children to sign, the promiseoutlines commitments made by the cam-paign to help parents and caregivers acrossthe country establish reading habits withthe children in their lives. It also includescorresponding promises for adults and chil-dren to assist them in building new readinghabits and maintaining and growing exist-ing ones.

“Reading and sharing stories with chil-

dren is one of the most powerful gifts youcan give them,” explains Jade Jacobsohn, managing director of Nal’ibali.

“Not only does it help to develop children’sliteracy skills, it also fires up those parts ofthe brain concerned with imagination, emo-tion, sensation and movement.

“Ultimately it helps to create the neuralcircuits that enable sophisticated thinkingand reasoning, helping children to do wellat school.”

Founded in 2012 by PRAESA (the Projectfor the study of alternative education inSouth Africa) and the DG Murray Trust,Nal’ibali has been working with a growingnumber of partners to get everyone in SouthAfrica excited about reading and storytel-ling in English and other home languages.

The campaign has achieved significantsuccess through sustained mentoring andcollaboration with communities, reading

clubs, literacy organisations and volunteersof all ages and has grown to include 810 read-ing clubs since its inception.

It is also helping to grow the library ofSouth African children’s literature and sto-ries through its bi-weekly reading-for-enjoy-ment newspaper supplement and weekly ra-dio stories. To date Nal’ibali has produced51 stories, and in 2016 aims to add to this witha further eight stories.

“We have made our promise to the nationto assist and support children and adults inbecoming strong and powerful readersthrough the development, translation anddistribution of literacy materials as well ason-the-ground support and we hope thatthey will join us on our literacy journey in2016 as we work together to grow a nationthat reads,” continued Jacobsohn.

The Story Power promise forms part of thecampaign’s broader Story Power campaign

with the clear message that anyone canshare a story anytime, anywhere. And, un-derpinning the Nal’ibali methodology is theidea that reading for enjoyment reaps thebest rewards as children who have enjoya-ble storytelling and reading experienceswith caregivers at home show more motiva-tion to read on their own.

With this in mind the campaign is askingfamilies to make reading a fun part of everyday this year by reading and sharing storiestogether for just 15 minutes in their homelanguages. Stories in a range of South Afri-can languages are available from Nal’ibali’sweb and mobisites, as are tips and ideas onhow to read and share them.V Nal’ibali will be distributing the special promise tomembers of its network of reading clubs and is available for download by members of the public fromNal’ibali’s web and mobisites, www.nalibali.org andwww.naliabli.mobi.

GETS keeps growing

The GETS organisation in Bonteheuwel makes the community aware of their needs withmarches and various projects throughout the year.

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

Last year was a busy one for a Down Syn-drome awareness project in Bonteheuwel, but beware – there’s more action in 2016.

Genes to Success (GETS) is calling on allparents or caregivers in Bonteheuwel andsurrounding areas with Down Syndromechildren to join them in their programmesand projects.Faseega Coetzee, founder member of

GETS, said that one of the highlights of lastyear was the start of their physiotherapysessions at the Multi-purpose centre inBonteheuwel.

“This will be happening again this yearand after having a meeting with LetitiaRustin of the UCT physiotherapy depart-ment at Groote Schuur Hospital, it wasagreed that from February UCT’s fourthyear students will start their sessions onMondays and Thursdays,” she said.“These sessions will be running from

13:00 to 15:00 and are very beneficial to theparticipants.”

Coetzee also stated that they were verybusy throughout the festive season recap-

ping their successes and planning for thenew year.“Flyers and information went out to par-

ents with special needs children. We hopethey will make use of this opportunity as itwill only benefit their children in future.”She further stated that they are working

on setting up ameetingwith the UCT speechtherapy department.“If thismeeting is successful, wewill hope-

fully have speech therapy sessions at theVanguard Health Centre.“Our objective within GETS is to promote

awareness of people with Down Syndromeand other intellectual disabilities.“We also have interaction with other spe-

cial needs people and want to include themin our rehabilitation services.“The ultimate aim is show the world that

the disabled have their part to play in socie-ty.“Wepray that yearwill bemore successful

and that our community will be more re-sponsive to the needs of our special needspeople and children.”V For more information about the organisation callFaseega Coetzee on 073 779 4457 or Marlene Juliuson 072 888 0678.

Snake bites rife this summer

The presence of puff adders (pictured) and Cape cobras has seen an increase in the number ofsnake bites in pets, says a local veterinary hospital with several branches across the Peninsula.Snake bite treatment is a very expensive affair, but can save the life of a pet.

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

Snakes soaking up the sun and slither-ing away from veld fires often end upin residential backyards, making them

a serious adversary to domestic pets.Because of this, veterinarians Ryan Nor-

rie andNolanMoss at the TygerbergAnimalHospital say their hospital has recently seenan increase in the number of snake bites inpets.

“We have definitely seen an increase insnake bites this year,” Moss says. “Thereseems to be an increase across the Cape Pen-insula.”

He sayswhilenoaccuratenumbers areyetavailable, the largest chunk of the bites aretaking place close to Table Mountain.

The reasons are simple, Moss says.“Snakes aremore active in hot, dryweather, which may account for the increased num-bers recently.”

Fires send snakes fleeing to gardens, housesNorrie agrees: “Snakes are cold-blooded

animals that raise their body temperatureby lying in the sun or lower it by crawlinginto the shade. So this means snake biteswill be less likely to happen in winter timeas the snakes are hibernating.“Also something to think about is all of the

fires we are experiencing – you find thatmost wildlife will move to safer areas, andthis could be your back garden or even yourhouse,” Norrie says. They have seen mostly Cape cobra or puff

adder snake bites over the last two months,Moss adds.He explains a bit more about the chemical

reactions causedby the two toxins: “Cape co-bras are neurotoxic and cause paralysis ofthe respiratory muscles, leading to death.Puff adders are cytotoxic and bites cause se-

vere tissue swelling, with fluid, blood andprotein loss.“In both cases anti-venom treatment redu-

ces the severity of clinical signs but must begiven in the early stages,” Moss says.According to him, cobra bite victims need

to be placed on a ventilator, normally for oneto three days, and they require intensivecare, while puff adder victims often developshock and multiple organ failure, requiringintensive care and usually multiple plasmaand blood transfusions. And treatment is not cheap.“The cost of treatment ... can escalate be-

yond R30 000 in some cases. Many animalsunfortunately die before they are presentedto the clinic.”

Moss adds cobra bites that are treated ag-gressively and early, usually have a morepromising outcome, but not so with puff ad-der bites.

“Evenwith aggressive treatment the prog-nosis forpuff adderbites is alwaysguarded,”Moss says. “I recently treated a staff mem-ber’s dog that required four blood transfu-sions, six plasma transfusions, and tookover one month to fully recover,” he says.Norrie says they’ve seen some really sad cas-es, but it’s not all doom and gloom.

“Most of the time if a pet pulls throughfrom such an attack there are hardly any aft-er-effects, but possible scarring or muscleloss from dead tissue has been seen.

“You won’t see it very often, but if a pa-

tient was bitten on an extremity and to savethe pet’s life, amputation can be an option,”he says.“We have seen some heartbreaking cases

where the outcome was death. In one casewe had two rottweilers that were bitten bythe same snake andboth dogswere put downdue to their state,” says Norrie.

Owners need to keep clearHe addswhen pets are bitten, owners need

to keep clear of the snakes to avoid being bit-ten themselves. So how can owners avoidpets getting bitten?

“There is no way of avoiding snake bitesat home short of permanently housing thepet,” says Moss.Pet owners need to be aware of the risks

when taking their animals on walks, andadds they need to learn to identify the twosnakes.“Neither snake is particularly aggressive.

Pet owners should never attempt to confronta snake,” Moss says.

Once bitten, time is of the essence, espe-cially where the Cape cobra is concerned.“Only a few veterinary practices stock an-

ti-venomdue to its high cost, and fewer prac-tices still have 24-hour care and ventilators, for the same reason.

“Pet owners should acquaint themselveswith practices that are able to treat snakebites. If a pet is bitten by either snake, theyshould immediately be transported to a 24-hour facility that possesses a ventilator andstocks anti-venom.”Norrie says their facility is one of few that

stocks the required anti-venom and is openat all hours. “The anti-venom we have onstock is the same used on humans. Pleasenote that it is a very expensive medication.”V Has your pet been the unfortunate victim of asnake bite? Let TygerBurger know about your experience at [email protected].

City clinics getFreeCall linesFreeCall lines have been installed at 24

of the City of Cape Town’s health clin-ics across the city, including the clin-

ics in Blue Downs, Eerste River, Wesbank,Bothasig, Durbanville and Parow.‘‘Residents can now report general ser-

vice delivery issues while waiting to beseen by clinic staff. More importantly, thishas the potential to be a valuable tool forour Health Directorate. If a client has aproblem at the clinic, they can log that con-cernormakeanysuggestions to address theissue in real time. To date, client concernshave been dealt with at clinic level. Thisopens up a whole new world of possibili-ties,’’ says the City’s Mayco member forhealth, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

FreeCall lines were first introduced in2012 as ameans of allowing residents in dis-advantaged areas to communicate with theCity’s call centre free of charge for generalenquiries and to report service requests. Todate, 142 FreeCall lines have been installedat municipal buildings, housing offices, cash offices and libraries. The City’s Mayco member for corporate

services, Xanthea Limberg added: ‘‘We arepleased that our roll-out of FreeCall lines atCity clinics will aid residents to provideconstructive feedback to the City so we canensure that our residents receive the quali-ty health care they deserve.“This has the potential to further im-

prove our services.’’

Street safety to be priorityGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

Safety on the streets must become a pri-ority in Delft and surrounding areas. That is the wish of Colonel Heidie de

Jager, acting station commander for theDelft precinct.“I want the public in Delft to be more

safety conscious and to enhance theirown safety,” she said last week after re-viewing incidents in the area. She stated that her primary concern

currently is to address rape, sexual as-saults, house robberies and car hijack-ings.“Since the beginning of December to

18 January 31 cases of rape were report-ed, three of sexual assault and two of at-tempted rape,” she said.“Six cases of house robbery were re-

ported and seven incidents of car hijack-ing.“When it comes to the rape cases, most

of them involved the abuse of alcohol. Inmany cases the victim knows the attack-er or they come from shebeens andwakeup naked.“With regard to the cases of sexual as-

sault, parental supervision is of utmostimportance where minors need protec-tion and are most vulnerable.”She also pointed out that in respect of

house robberies toomany houses are in-adequately protected.“In too many cases the suspects are

able to kick open the doors easily, or thecomplainants allege that when theywoke up the suspects were already intheir house.“People must start investing in safety

measures such as burglar bars and safe-ty gates to enhance their safety.”Car hijackings have also become ama-

jor concern.“Drivers must also be more aware, es-

pecially when they are alone, becausethat is when these culprits strike.“People coming home late at night

must also be aware not to leave theircars idling while opening gates or gara-ges.“Extra care and caution should also be

practised when operating in isolatedareas.”De Jager requested that the public en-

sure they take precautionary measures, particularly at night or when they arealone.“Victims must also do their utmost to

identify the perpetrators of crimes, bybeing aware of their surroundings and/or to take note of identifying featuressuch as scars, tattoos, and any outstand-ing features of suspects.“When accosted by armed suspects it

is important not to resist, that one stayscalm, stay focused and make every at-tempt to take note of outstanding bodilyor identifying marks that could assist inthe investigation and identification ofthe perpetrators.”

Fifty years after the destruction of Dis-trict Six, David Kramer has assembleda talented cast to pay homage to the vi-

partner, Taliep Petersen, created hugelysuccessful musicals like District Six, Fairy-land and Kat and the Kings, will celebratethe vibrant musical culture found in thestreets, halls, hotels, clubs and bioscopes of1960s District Six.

When Philani Dladla cracked openhis first book – a heavy politicalread – he had no idea he’d one daybecome a published author him-self.As a 12-year-old boy reading The

Last White Parliament by Frederikvan Zyl Slabbert, he also had no in-kling of the journey he would haveto endure to write his own book.It was this journey that Dladla

recently shared at the Big Issuebreakfast, and his work to inspireothers to start reading. The regular breakfast event is

used to raise funds in support ofthe magazine.Dladla spent years sleeping un-

der the Nelson Mandela Bridge inJohannesburg, trapped in drug ad-diction. It was his love for books, inspired when he was 12, which ul-timately saved him.His first book was a gift on his

birthday from his mother’s em-ployer. Growing up in rural KwaZ-ulu Natal, Dladla could hardlyspeak English when he was giventhat book. But he pored over it, in-tent on understanding it and un-locking the promise ofmore books. The book collection of hismother’semployer was later left to him.In his early twenties, Dladla

worked as a health caregiver. Butthe freedom that camewith the paycheque saw him experimentingwith drugs.“It was something I didn’t have

before. I was overwhelmed by theindependence,” he says. His addiction soon spiralled out

of control, and he started sellinghis possessions to buy drugs whenhe ran out of money.“Drugs changed my life. I de-

pended on them. I could go dayswithout eating, but I couldn’t gofourhourswithout drugs. I soldmythings and eventually, when Icouldn’t pay my rent anymore, Iwas kicked out.”The only place Dladla felt he

could go was the bridge, where helived with other drug users. Whenhe arrived, he was forced to handover his clothes as “rent”.“They told me nothing was for

nothing. Living on the street isdangerous. People fight over sim-ple things. You see people dyingfrom drugs. It’s everyman for him-self,” he says. But he managed to hang onto his

books, and eventually he started tosell them to make a living.Dladla would review each book,

selling them to passing motorists

with prices determined by howgood each book was.“I hadnothing left. All I hadwere

my books. I had to work with whatI had,” he says. One day, Dladla was spotted by

a young filmmaker, who produceda documentary on his “mobilebookshop”.“I shared my story. By that time

I was nine months clean and run-ning a soup kitchen for my friends

living under the bridge with themoney I would have spent ondrugs. Iwas also running a readingclub for children in Joubert Park, near where I lived,” he says. The documentary spurred an in-

flux of donations which allowedhim to expand the reading club andteach children computer skills.“Working with kids is always a

nice experience. We read and I helpthem with homework,” he says. But he has had to leave some

friends behind along the way.“It’s hard to help someone who

doesn’t want help. I had to leave be-hind my friends who do drugs andfocus on the reading clubs,” hesays.Dladla has now told this journey

in a book, The Pavement Book-worm.“I always dreamed I would be

published. When I was living onthe street I would write down ev-erything that happened, hopingone day someone would come andpublish it,” he says.“But I didn’t write it to make

money. I wrote it to tell the story.I’ve always loved telling storiesand, even in the hard times, put-ting a smile on someone’s face us-ing books.”

His love of reading saved him from despair

Philani Dladla has written a book, The Pavement Bookworm, about howbooks helped him quit his drug addiction and move off the streets.

In the high-tech world of the modern neona-tal ICU there is no substitute for breastmilk. When a vulnerable baby’s mother is unableto supply breast milk, donated breast milkcan offer this life-saving gift from anothermother.Neonatologist Dr Alan Horn of Groote

Schuur Hospital says: “I firmly believe thatthe practice of milk banking is still in its in-fancy, globally and especially in South Afri-ca. I expect it will steadily increase in pro-file.“Donating breast milk is an act that in-

volves the least pain and themost gain, com-pared to any other human tissue or organdonation. It is potentially life-saving and isworth more than equipment or staff. Theterm milk “bank” is perfect – it simultane-ously describes the safety and the value ofdonated milk.”Milk Matters is such a breast milk bank

devoted to saving the lives of primarily pre-mature babies in neonatal ICUs who do nothave access to their own mother’s milk. Ithas depots in locations around the city, in-cluding Brackenfell, Durbanville, Milner-

ton, Panorama and Parow. The need for donor milk is mainly when

a mother is too ill to provide breast milk oris unable to physically be with or regularlyvisit her baby in hospital. Donor milk mayalso be needed for a short time in the caseof multiple births such as triplets, when themothermay initiallynothave enoughbreast

milk for her babies.Already the demand for donormilk far ex-

ceeds supplies and requests from doctors fordonor milk continue to increase.MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-

nisation, started providing donor breastmilk to the neonatal ICUs of Cape Town’sbiggest state hospitals in 2003. To date 30 hos-

pitals, in both the state and private sector, have received donormilk fromMilkMattersand in addition the organisation has helpedfive hospitals set up their own in-housemilkbanks. Most of the donormilk goes to babiesin state hospitals, where the need is highest.Since just 50ml of breast milk can feed a

baby of less than a kg for 24 hours, mothersdo not need to donate large quantities ofbreast milk to make a significant impact. Some donor mothers make once-off dona-

tions of stockpiled milk that is not requiredfor their own baby, whilst othermothers do-nate for periods varying from a few weeksto a year or more.Milk Matters provides donors with sterile

containers, which can be collected from oneof the 25depots,wherebatches of frozenmilkcan also be delivered. All milk is pasteur-ised.MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-

nisation, relies on donations from individu-als and organisations both to maintain thecurrent service and to expand.V For more information about donations, visitwww.milkmatters.org

“Hy is by diehuis gebore en was nooit hospitaal toe nie.Twee maande ná sy geboorte het ons homkliniek toe geneem.

“Daar het ’n verpleër hom al sy inspui-tings op een slag gegee, maar toe begin hykoorsig en lam raak.“Ons vermoed dis as gevolg van die talle

inspuitings. Dalk was dit te veel.”Volgens die ouma het Wazliano vir weke

daarna gereeld onophoudelik gehuil.“Een oggend hoor ek net ’n doodsroggel.

Hy was in ’n koma. Onsis voorberei op die ergste.”Wazliano het bygekom en is ná maande se

hospitaalbehandeling ontslaan. Hy sou bydie huis verder versorg word.

“Hy was baie maer, net vel en been.”

Mountain-biking enthusiasts of all ages canlook forward to the second MomentumGrape MTB Ride, taking place as part of the2016 Stellenbosch Wine Festival presentedby Pick n Pay. The 17km fun ride is sched-uled for Sunday 7 February, starting and fin-ishing at the festival venue, the Coetzenburgsports grounds.

The route will wind its way through Stel-lenbosch and the spectacular JonkershoekValley, mostly on tarred roads, with smallersections of easy dirt roads and tracks. Head-ing out from Coetzenburg, riders will headup Jonkershoek Road past estates including

Lanzerac and Rudera, up to the turnaroundpoint at the Jonkershoek Nature Reservegate, before embarking on the return loopvia Assegaaibos and the Jonkershoek Roadcycle path. The relatively gentle routemakes the ride suitable for the whole familyto enjoy. The turnaround area is the highestpoint on the route, so riders can really enjoythe scenery while freewheeling most of theway back to the finish point.

Special permission has been granted byCapeNature to utilise the more secluded As-segaaibos section on the route – an area notusually accessible to cyclists – so riders are

in for an extra-special ride this year. The ride starts at 07:30, with registration

starting at 06:00. Early entries are R110 andcan be found online at www.dirtopia.co.zabefore 2 February. Last-minute entries costR140.
