Be prepared to payRM200mil compensation for concessionaire if access road is opened, says Khirthe figure too high.

The current state government, hesaid, had, however, promised to openthe access road recently but it shouldnot use public funds as it was unfairto the rest of the taxpayers in thestate who would not benefit from it.(See story below)

Khir, who is also the OppositionLeader, also called on the state gov-ernment to ensure that it kept itspromise to offer the first 20 cubicmetres of water free to consumersfrom June 1. He said the offer wouldcost Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor(Syabas) RM17mil a month.

"We do not want to see problemsin the implementation as people areeagerly waiting for the free waterthat was listed as part of their elec-tion promise," he said, adding thatchanges were also needed to bemade to the billing system.

Khir also asked the state govern-ment to fulfil its other promise, 20%discount on assessment charges onhomes and 10%for commercial prop-erties.

He said annual assessment collec-tion in the state stood at RM889miland providing the discounts wouldreduce the government's revenue by

Two developersorderedto stop workCouncil finds mosquito-breeding grounds at the sitesBy SALINA KHALIDsalina@the!':tar.com.my

THE Subang Jaya MunicipalCounciLhas given the devel-oper of projects in USJlO/1

and USJ8, Subang Jaya, an imme-diate stop-work order after Aedesmosquitoes were found breedingon the premises.

In the case of the project inUSJ10/1, mosquito larvae wasfound at 10 spots on the premises.

"A stop-work order is issuedwhen we find larvae at threeplaces within the premises," saidMPSJpresident Datuk Adnan MdIkhsan, who was irked by thelackadaisicalattitude by the pro-ject's developer.

The construction site for thenew USJ8 policestation had fourmosquito-breeding spots whileanother site in SS13/USJ1man-aged to escape the same fatewhen two of the four samplestaken did not haveAedeslarvae.

Instead, the developer wasslapped with RM500 fines foreach spot where the larvae werefound.

The project developersslappedwith the stop-work orders wouldhave to get a pest controlcompa-ny to carry out the necessarywork and to provide proof thatthe area was free from mosquitolarvae.

Adnan said it was the secondtime the construction site for thenew USJ8policestation had beenissueda stop-workorder.

In February,it was ordered tostopworkfor a week forthe sameoffence.

"They have engaged a pest con-trol company to ensure that theirpremises was free from mosqui-to-breeding grounds but we stillfound mosquito larvae.

'They did not expect us tosearch in those hard to reach

Iplaces," he said during anti-dengue operations in SubangJayaon Thursday.

The operation, which was joint-1y condllcted with the StateHealth Department Dengue TaskForce, saw the team combing thewhole construction site.

However, the pla!1 was. cutshort by the weather and theyonlymanagedto checkthree sites.

Adnan said the council wouldcontinue operations to keepdengue casesat bay.

Meanwhile, Selangor HealthDepartment director Dr RosnahHadis, who visited the site later, said the team was zeroing in onconstruction sites this time.

She said a survey conductedshowed that construction siteswere the number one culprit for

mosquito-breeding."Usually out of 10 construction

sites checked, seven will havemosquito~breeding sites.

"That is 70% compared withonly 50% for factories and 2% forresidential units," she said.

She added thdt current statisticson the number of reported denguecases weekly throughout the statewere quite stable.

Last week, 327 cases werereported.

"For us, 300 is the benchmark.Anything beyond that is dn emer-gency.

"Usually,45% of the reporteecases are positive for dengue," ShEsaid.

Since January this year, thenhave been 14 recorded death:related to dengue complications.

She said Shah Alam stilremained in the top spot with 5!reported cases last week and 6~the previous week.

SubangJaya recorded a total 046 cases last week with 35 thrprevious week.

Dr Rosnahhas lauded the steptaken by MPSJand the localcommunitYto control the pandemic.
