Two Calendars for Reading

through the Bible in a Year

Calendar 1: Calendar for Daily Reading of Scripture By Which the Bible May be Finished in One Year, Arranged by D. W. Whittle, Philadelphia (1840 – 1901). This calendar has been very popular since it was first published. It has been used for years in the back of the Thomas Nelson NKJV Bible. To my surprise, I later discovered it in the back of the Riverside Family Bible that my parents bought my family years ago, where the author’s credit was duly given. This schedule will take you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament twice. There is an OT reading in the morning and a NT reading in the evening. This is great reading plan, but reading the NT twice in a year increases significantly the amount of daily reading, which can be challenge for those who read slowly or are have a busy schedule. I have used this schedule several times. I published it in on my website on December 27, 2007. Calendar 2: EVERYDAY WITH GOD: Through the Year Daily Bible Reading Schedule was prepared by Bible & School Supply: P. O. Box 3252, Montgomery, Alabama. I have used this plan since the mid 1970’s. It was a small trifold pamphlet that was easy to carry in the Bible. There were little squares to the left of the date where one could check. I have used it to read the NT Testament in Greek four times a year. This is the best plan for Christians who are pressed for time and need a somewhat less difficult plan. I have taken some slight liberty in my edition of this plan. The original in a very few cases would combine parts of books. I have chosen to extend the reading a chapter or two to avoid that. I published this schedule on January 1, 2013. Whichever plan you choose,

May the Lord give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the mighty working of His power, which he wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places.

Alexander Campbell’s Rule 7 for Bible Study Rule 7: For the salutary and sanctifying intelligences of the Oracles of God, the following rule is indispensible: We must come within the understanding distance. There is a distance which is properly called the speaking distance, or the hearing distance; beyond which the voice reaches not, and the ears hear not. To hear another, we must come within the circle which the voice audibly fills. Now we may with propriety say, that as it respects God, there is an understanding distance. All beyond that distance cannot understand God; all within it can easily understand him in all matters of piety and morality. God himself is the center of that circle, and humility is the circumference He, then, that would interpret the Oracles of God to the salvation of his soul, must approach this volume with the humility and docility of a child, and meditate upon it day and night. Like Mary, he must sit at the Master’s feet, and listen to the words which fall from his lips. To such a one there is an assurance of knowledge, to which the man of letters alone never attained, and which the mere critic never felt. (Christian System, p. 7f)

Notes from Internet Publisher: Donald L. Potter

December 27, 2007 - www.donpotter.net

Of the Bible reading schedules I have used over the years, this one by Civil War veteran, Major D. W. Whittle, is one of the best. He also wrote several hymns that are still popular. I pray that everyone who downloads this schedule from my website will find it as effective as I have in reading the OT once and the NT twice in a year. To be truly effective, you need to couple your Bible study with meditation, prayer, and obedience.

MEDITATION In meditation we concentrate our full attention on a passage of Scripture we have read for the day. This should not be hurried. The impact of Scripture on our lives will far exceed anything we can imagine if we devote sufficient time to meditation. This is an art that requires a great deal of practice. Our minds naturally tend to run from one thought to another like a never-satisfied squirrel jumping from tree to tree in search of nuts. We have to stop what we are doing and devote time exclusively to meditation. This requires an act of the will. It demands conscious effort. We come to a personal realization of the presence of God as He meets us in His Word.

Psalms 1:1 - Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

PRAYER

Meditation naturally leads to prayer. Meditation creates in us a desire to glorify God by worshiping Him and obeying His will. As we learn more about God’s will from reading His inspired words, we find ourselves asking Him to help us to fulfill His purpose for our life. It is a wonderful thing to realize that “He can do exceeding abundantly above all that we can ask or think.” It involves the salvation of all mankind as Paul told Timothy that “God wills that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” The full range of prayer consists of “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks.”

1Timothy 2:1 - I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Ephesians 3:14 - For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 6 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

OBEDIENCE

Matthew 7: 21- Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

The above Everyday with God Bible reading plan is based on a plan that I used for many years. The Bible & School Supply in Montgomery, Alabama prepared it. It goes straight through the Bible just one time in a year, without alternating between Testaments. The pace is much more leisure that the plan that covers the OT once and the NT twice. I used it to read though the LXX and Greek NT in 1978. I even used it to read through the NT four times in one year. On the next page is a one-sheet format that can be cut out and folded to fit nicely in your Bible.
