“TWINKLES! TWINKIE WINKIE! FOOD!” The tortoise shell skinned tabby appeared from the shadow of the cabinets, and gazed at his owner. His lime green eyes drifted to his bowl. He continued strolling gently towards his meal, whilst he could feel his owner’s strokes along his back, and elongated himself slowly with every touch. As he was nearing towards his meal, he hesitated. The smell of tuna was pungent and filled his nostrils. His tail sunk. His ears flicked. He knew that smell from before. Then, he looked up to see his owner notice the change too; the throaty voice proceeded to ring in his ears again. “WHAT’S DA MATTER, TWINKIE? YOUR FOOD IS RIGHT THERE. GO AND GET IT. GO ON.” Twinkles let out a small purr. He wanted to be left alone; left alone to savour and reminisce the memories that had awakened in his mind. He lowered his face into the bowl, and begrudgingly began nipping the surface of the food. The human would be satisfied for now. That theory was proven as he heard the door shut. Then he abruptly lifted his head and gazed at the bowl. Tuna. The flakes were a paler shade. A pale and equivocal beige that reminded him of the shorthair, Peaches. Peaches who after her first week there, would watch him intently from her scratching post. Twinkles didn’t know if she was attempting to seem officious in anyway; he just hoped his owner would catch her and realise that her claw only just scraped the side of their newly purchased leather recliner. It wasn’t long after that, before she attempted to get to know him. He’d be on his daily rounds; a walk across the fence to the adjacent road, a mad dash across the small junction for a thrill, and a leisurely walk across the crescent. After all that time, he didn’t realise that he’d pick up a shadow. On the third day, he turned. He had an apprentice. The more the merrier, he thought to himself. Days turned to months, and after the 6 th , it happened. The moment the slits in their eyes met. Maybe it was an outpour of emotion he didn’t grasp control of, but his pupils dilated in the spur of the moment. Then Peaches head leaned forward, and his head also, and
