Thisyear,youdon’thavetowaituntilyoumakeyour2010NewYear’sresolutionstomakesomechanges.Herearesomehelpfultipstohelpyouavoidpackingonthepoundsthisholidayseason:
• Youdon’thavetogotoeverypartyordinner!• Don’tshowuptoapartyhungry• Sizeupthebuffetbeforeyougrabaplate• Decidewhatyoureallywanttoeataheadoftime• Limityourselftoonetriptothebuffet• Fillyourplatethree-quartersfullwithfruitsandveggiesfirst• Limityouralcoholintake• Don’tstandnearthebuffettable• Eatwithyournon-dominanthand• Chewgumwhennoteating• Dance,talkandsocialize—it’snotallaboutthefood!

In addition to choosing healthier options, try to eat normallythroughouttheday.Don’ttrytostarveyourselfto“saveup”caloriesbeforeapartyordinner.Also,besuretoexerciseregularlyandgetenoughsleep.Mostimportantly,puttheemphasisonspendingtimewithfamilyandfriends,notonthefood!

Teachingyourchildrentablemannersmaysoundoldfashioned,but itnevergoesoutof style.Havinggoodmanners showsyourrespectforotherpeople,andit’smorethansaying“please”and“thankyou.”It’sabouthelpingyourchildrendevelophabitsandbehaviorsthatwillhelpthemrelatetoadultsandotherchildreninapositiveway.“Tomakeyourfamilymealtimetimespecialandrelaxing,slowdown, sit and talkwithyourchildrenandexpectgoodbehavior.Youwillbepleasantlysurprisedathowmucheasierandenjoyableitwillbecome,”saidDr.MaryZurn,vicepresidentofeducationforPrimroseSchools.“Thisisimportantbecausechildrenwithgoodmannersoftenfinditeasiertomakefriendsandgetalongwithothersatschoolandathome.”
Dr. Zurn offers five table manners tips to get parents started:1.Startearly:Don’twaituntilyouthinkyourchildis“oldenough”to
learnpolitebehavior.Justaschildrenlearntocrawlbeforetheylearntowalk,theyalsolearnmannersinstages.Eveninfantswatchparentsforrulesofexpectedbehavior.Veryyoungchildrencanlearntosignkeyphrasessuchas“please”or“thankyou”andthentransitiontothespokenwordsaroundagetwo.Byagethree,childrenshouldbeabletostayseatedatmealtimeifyousitdownwiththem.
2. Give specific feedback: Children learn best when they receivespecificfeedbackabouttheirbehaviorwhichisfarmoreeffectivethangenericpraise.Forexample,insteadofsaying,“Goodjob,”youcansay,“I’msogladyousetthetable.”
3.Encouragepoliteconversation:Childrenasyoungastwocanlearntoengageinpoliteconversationatthedinnertablewiththerightkindofguidance.Asyouareatthetableeatingtogether,showthemhowtotaketurnslistening,talking,andaskingquestions.
4.Setagoodexample:Makesureyourwordsandactionsmatch.Childrenwatchparentsallthetimeforbehaviorclues.Forexample,ifyouwantyourchildtoeatbroccolibecauseit’sahealthyfoodchoice,youwillneedtoletthemseeyouenjoyeatingitaswell.
