PAGE 3 Vigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES

The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its mean-ing in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that fa-vors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinc-tions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven.

Question of the Week

First Reading — Be strong, fear not! Here is your God (Isaiah 35:4-7a). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:1-5). Gospel — Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak (Mark 7:31-37). Question for Children: How do you shun others whom you don’t like?

Question for Adults: In what ways do you discriminate in your heart against those whom you judge less than fully wor-thy?

Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It’s a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the law-yers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you’re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you’re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gon-zaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow nov-ices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us—nation, parish church, occupation, illness—can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enor-mous appeal. To believe in the “communion of saints” is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life’s struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Safety tips for kids playing sports this school year Sports seasons start early, even for young children, and while it’s great that they’re out getting exercise and learning new skills, safety is still a top priority. It’s rec-ommended that all children who are playing school sports have an annual physical, and relevant health information (allergies, conditions, etc.) should be shared with coaches. Parents should make sure their children have the right gear, and that it fits and works wells. Children should stay well-hydrated, well-fed, and well-rested to keep up their energy and strength. Student athletes should be learning to be kind and fair, too, no matter the outcome of the game. For more tips https://www.safekids.org/tip/sports-safety-tips

BAPTISMS

WE WELCOME TO OUR PARISH COMMUNITY

BAPT IZED ON SEPTEMBER 1 , 2018

Julianna Alyssa Ebanks Martin Phillip Casillas

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

SPANISH HEALING SERVICE At St. Linus Catholic Church

Monday, September 10, 2018 at 7:30 pm Presider: Fr. Christopher Felix

Fr. Christopher Felix is the current Administrator at St Linus Church. He is the eldest son of a family of 11 chil-dren. Born in Mission Hills, and received his BA degree in Theology from Ave Maria University, and a Master’s Degree of Arts in Spirituality and Master of Divinity from St. John's Seminary. He was a former teacher at Alemany High School before answering the call of the Holy Spirit to enter the priesthood. Growing up in a big family was without its share of issues and struggles but Fr. Felix shares in his homily how the Lord, in faith of His providential care, ceases to amaze God's pouring of blessings and care to his family. Fr Felix is drawn to Mary's fiat of "Thy will be done" and maintains an intimate relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, nourished by the Word and Sacraments in his service to God's people.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA TRAVELING STATUE VISIT

The message of Fatima is to encourage us in praying the holy rosary, while meditating on the passion and life of our Lord, to bring peace and healing to the world. This message was well lived out by many of our parishioners weekend before last! Special thanks to our dedicated team, Hermie Abido, Jane Rolfes, Sue Cunneen, Anna Betancourt and Marti Borjon. Thanks to our St. Linus choir members directed by Anna Betancourt, who took time from her extremely busy schedule to help us out. The beautiful music, instruments and voices, added so much to our liturgy.

The message of Fatima was alive and well in our parish during this weekend of prayer and meditation.

ATTENTION COACHES!

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time We fear many things in our world in these times. The words of Isaiah are comforting: “Say to those whose hearts are frightened; Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, [who] comes with vindication; with divine recom-pense [God] comes to save you.” Even nature thrives in God’s mercy and love. “Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water.” We worry a great deal about the state of our beautiful wild places, but here God promises healing of our lands and nature refuges as a re-assurance of our own healing from sin and death. The sin of destruction of our environment, and the serious evidence all around us of storms, wildfires, tornados, rising sea levels, floods, and increasing heat testify to our lack of care for our beautiful earth. But the earth, under God, resists our destructive actions and will warn us of our sin by the ferocity of its weather and wild-ness.

SHOW NO PARTIALITY Not only do we at times show little care for the earth and its beauty, but we resist the command of God to care for each other in our need. James warns us not to give pride of place to those who are rich and obviously so. He points out the needy, those poorly dressed, and warns us to care for them and not to look down on them, for God sees their need and also their trust in God and love for others. It is such as these whom Jesus came to heal and give hope. Similarly, in the reading from Isaiah, God’s com-ing is accompanied by the opening of the ears of the deaf and the eyes of the blind. God comes to make the lame leap and the mute sing. (So, everybody, please sing in church. It gives glory to God!)

Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life

Please pray! The babies are counting on us. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s announcement that he will retire has catapulted Roe v. Wade into the news. Pro Abortion groups are pulling out all stops to urge the U.S. Senate to reject any nominee who does not promise to pub-licly endorse Roe. And they are misrepresenting the legal and social reality of Roe. And what would happen if it is over-turned. The upcoming Supreme Court vacancy provides us with yet another occasion requiring focused prayer. The U.S. Con-ference of Catholic Bishops does not support or oppose the confirmation of any presidential nominee. However, given the historical movement, the U.S. Bishops are urging all people of good will to pray that a change in the U.S Supreme

Court may move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life.

From Friday August 3, 2018 to Friday, September 28, 2018, the weekly call to prayer will be adapted as a 9 week Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life. In addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, partici-pants are encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intention of the Novena. For more information and for those wishing to join this Novena prayer effort, please visit www.usccb.org/pray.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

The St. Linus Prayer Shawl Ministry is a small group of women who bring the love of knitting and crocheting into a prayer ministry. The prayer shawls and lap blankets are for those who are in special need of being “wrapped” in prayer. The shawl or lap blanket will be a reminder that the recipient is being lifted up in prayer. We meet on the last Monday of each month in the Parish Conference Room in the Parish Center from 6pm-8pm. Our meetings begin with prayer, sharing of our projects, and fellowship while we crochet or knit. We welcome anyone to join us and we will provide lessons in crochet-ing if needed. Prayer Shawls and Lap Blankets are given freely upon request. We depend largely upon donations of yarn or gift cards. Please call Mary at (951) 500-0787 or email at [email protected].
