Where Would be? (a contInuIng serIes) I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about what the Church will look like in the not too distant future, as my gaze is often focused on all of you who fill these pews Sunday after Sunday. I know (from what I hear) that this parish once had more English Masses every weekend. However, for the last several years, one site has two and one has only one, and we still have quite a bit of empty space.I continue in my reflection to wonder, what this space will look like, over the passing of years, when those of you over the age of 60 have left this earth, we pray, for the glory of heaven? And I weep. I weep because I love our Church and her faith that has formed, nurtured, and guided us throughout our lives. Without the Church, we would never have been introduced to the person of Jesus Christ and all he has done for us and continues to do for us each and every day. Without the Church, we would never have known the story that we hear every Sunday from the pages of the New Testament. Without the Church, we would never have been re-born in the life-giving waters of Baptism, received the gift of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation, been nourished with Christ’s Body and Blood, the medicine of immortality at Holy Mass, never encountered the Divine Mercy and the forgiveness of our many sins in the Sacrament of Penance, and that I would not even be here with you today, if I had not been called and ordained to share in the power of the one eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ. Now, in my experience the first reaction of “professional Church people” to this looming crisis is stuff like: we need better homilies, better music, better hospitality; we need to make the Mass more contemporary and interesting; we need better youth programs; we need more highly trained lay leaders, and of course to do all of this, folks, we need more of your money! . . . . . .. . .......Fr ..Matt,.Pastor

blessIng oF anIMals

On Sunday, October 2nd at 1pm we will celebrate our traditional blessing of animals in the front parking lot area outside of Our Lady of the Rosary Church Hall. Bring your pets, in a cage, on a leash, or in a bowl. This is a great time to reinforce to our children the gifts which are their pets and the responsibility we all have in caring for God’s creatures.

s.o.u.P on hIatus

The Wednesday night S.O.U.P. program (Sharing Ourselves with Undernourished People) is on hiatus for now. So NO S.O.U.P. sessions until further notice. We’ll keep you informed as to when they might resume.

sPIrItualIty tuesday - sePteMber 27Women’s.Lives.in.Early.California;.with Professors Beebe and Senkewicz from Santa Clara UniversityIn the early 1870s an historian gathered oral histories from the pre-state-hood gentry of California. The interviewers collected the stories from the women of the household. These women were Mexicans, residents of pre-US and pre-Gold Rush California, and Catholics. By the time that they were interviewed in the 1870s, they were quite aware that Catholicism had been replaced by Protestantism as the dominant spirituality of California. One of the things that they were trying to do was to figure out how best to maintain their own identity in this changed environment. 7:00-8:30 pm Saint Albert the Great Hospitality Room; refreshments will be served. Professor Rose Marie Beebe Ph.D. teaches Spanish and modern languages, their history and literatures, at Santa Clara University. Professor Robert Senkewicz teaches early American history, concentrating on the colonial, and revolutionary periods. He also teaches the history of California and the American Southwest at Santa Clara University.

huMan concerns corner - croP hunger Walk

Our Parish has created a team for the CROP Hunger Walk, which is a “walk for charity” that raises money to help eradicate hunger throughout the world. We will be joining teams sponsored by many churches throughout the Mid-Peninsula. The walk will take place on Sunday, October 2, start-ing at Burgess Park in Menlo Park. Walkers have the choice of completing a one mile, three mile, or five mile walk. Registration starts at 1:00; walks start at 2:00.

We have created a team, the St ..Thomas.Aquinas.Team, that will partici-pate in the event and raise funds to enhance food security. We will also have fun; there will be bands, food, games, and a silent auction. Twenty-five percent of funds raised stay in the San Francisco and Peninsula area to bolster the local hunger-fighting efforts here through the Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP) in East Palo Alto. You can register on the CROP Hunger Walk web site: https://www.crophungerwalk.org/menloparkca/ or you can just come to Burgess Park and look for our team. This activity has been supported by your Human Concerns Committee. For more infor-mation, send a message to Paul Chestnut at [email protected].

bIshoP Mcgrath’s stateMent on electIon

As we approach this Fall’s General Election, I know that many of you – like myself – are in the process of discerning the choices before us in the presidential race, as well as in many of the other races and issues that will be decided on November 8. I am writing to you today to put forward principles for your consideration in arriving at decisions that are consistent with Catholic teaching.

1. Every citizen who is eligible to vote must do so. It is a sacred trust, a grave responsibility. In casting a ballot, each person becomes a participant in our democratic process. Voting is a moral act, it expresses our values, our faith, and our hopes for our nation and world.

2. Be informed. Read and study the many issues and candidates that will appear on your ballot. There are no simple answers to the challenges that face our nation and our world.
