THE GREAT SIGN “It is not good for the man to be alone,” God says in the reading from Genesis (First Reading). Humans are social beings: God created us to live and work together, to share our lives, to care about and for each other. Shortly after this story in Genesis, Cain asks the rhetorical question: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The rest of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures answer with a re-sounding: “YES!” The great sign of the social nature of men and women is marriage, in which the “two of them become one body, the two shall be-come as one.” Another sign is the Eucharist, for as Paul says in the Communion Anti-phon: “we, though many, are one body, for we all share in the one loaf and in the one cup.” Marriage and Eucharist are signs of sharing lives and living together. The unity of humankind is shattered every day by the many scourges of injustice: racism, sexism, poverty, hunger, homeless-ness, war. We are constantly violating the fundamental principle: “let no man separate what God has joined.” God has joined us in a society of brothers and sisters because it is not good for us to be alone: let no one sepa-rate that society through collusion in injus-tice.

Man’s social nature makes it evi-dent that the progress of the human person and the advance of society itself hinge on each other. For the begin-ning, the subject and the goal of all social institutions is and must be the human person, which for its part and by its very nature stands completely in need of social life. This social life is not something added on to man. Hence, through his dealings with others, through reciprocal duties, and through fraternal dialogue he develops all his gifts and is able to rise to his destiny.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Dear Partners in the Mission,

Have you ever been called an angel? Perhaps the opposite. We are

neither, although it is a compliment to be called an angel (I don't recall

ever being labeled as such). Humans are enfleshed spirits, and angels

pure spirit. We do not become angels nor do angels become humans,

just as cats don't become dogs or dogs cats. Our Tradition (the teaching,

action and worship of the Apostles) has always proclaimed their existence and angels are explicitly mentioned by

Jesus and Sacred Scripture. The Catechism doesn't have a lot on angels (angel derived from the Latin word

“angelus” derived from the Greek word “angelos” which means messenger).

Last Friday we celebrated the feast day of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels, and on October 2 we

celebrated the memorial day of Guardian Angels. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we read "As purely

spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfec-

tion all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness.” par. 330.

"Angels have been present since creation and throughout the history of salvation." par. 332. Angels have an-

nounced, led, protected, and communicated in various roles for the People of God. They are Christ's angels. An an-

gel announced his Incarnation, a multitude announced his birth, Angels served him in the desert, strengthened him

in his agony in the garden, proclaimed the Good News of the Resurrection, and will be present at Christ's return, just

to cite some examples.

"From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession." par. 336

Peace.

tine at: 314-756-3646.

40 Days for life – Sacred Heart’s adopted day of prayer is Saturday, November 3rd

time to stand prayerfully outside Planned Parenthood on Forest Park Ave.,

please call Christine at 314-756-3646 or E-mail respectlife@sacredheart-

vp.com.

This is from the 40 Days for Life Website -Tom in York, Pennsylvania re-

ported that a couple with four children went into Planned Parenthood, but

changed their minds about abortion. “They just needed someone to tell them

that they were in our prayers.” The dad told the vigil participants that one of

their signs “sealed the deal.” The sign depicted a baby and simply said,

“Fearfully and Wonderfully Made –Psalms 1:39.”

SACRED HEART SCHOOL

This week, on Thursday and Friday, our eighth graders

will participate in a Leadership Retreat. We will be traveling

to an outdoor camp facility for this two-day event. During

this time, the students will participate in a variety of activities

that will require them to work as a group. The intent is for

their leadership skills to rise to the surface and also for those

who sometimes find it difficult to follow to learn the valuable

lesson that they do not always have the best answer. Each

year it is an important part of their preparation for transition-

ing to high school where they will have the opportunity to

more independently take on leadership roles. Please keep the

students and teachers in your prayers as they embark on this

adventure.

7-Year-Old Becomes Certified Barber So She Can Offer Free Haircuts To Kids in Her City

PHILADELPHIA, PA - She may be only 7 years old, but she has already found her calling in a pair of scissors. Before Neijae Graham-Henries ever even started the second grade, the youngster became a certified barber and started giving free haircuts to kids in Philadelphia as a means of community service. She first became interested in cutting hair when she followed her brother to check out the Junior Barber Academy. Though her sibling wasn’t interested in hairdos, Neijae certainly was. “She wasn’t intimidated because she was the youngest stu-dent and she was not intimidated because she was the only fe-male,” Neijae’s mother Jamie Graham told CBS News.
