THE GIFT OF THE REIGN OF GOD Matthew’s Gospel today expands on Isaiah’s ballad consid-

erably. A comparison with the same story in Mark’s Gospel

clearly shows us that here the author is busy teaching this

community of Jewish Christians: “This is a story about Israel a

long time ago; this is also a story about Jesus and the skeptical

leaders.”

Jesus as much as told these Jewish leaders that they were

the tenants who first stoned their own prophets. And he told the

leaders they were the tenants who would soon even dispose of

him—Jesus—and, in doing so, would forfeit their privileged

place of presenting to the world the promised Messiah.

“And this,” says Matthew’s Gospel, “is a story about you, the

inheritors of what was first offered to Israel.” The reign of God

was first opened to Israel and is now given to the whole world,

but it must be received as a gift. The first Christians are the

new tenants in the vineyard. The deeper reality of the reign or

kingdom of God is that it is available to everyone on the face of

the earth—Israel included.

EL REGALO DEL REINO DE DIOS El Evangelio de hoy según san Mateo amplía considerable-

mente la balada de Isaías. Una comparación con el mismo rela-

to en el Evangelio según san Marcos muestra que aquí el autor

se ocupa de enseñar a su comunidad de judío-cristianos: “Este

es un relato sobre el Israel de antaño; y es también un relato

sobre Jesús y los dudosos líderes”.

Jesús llegó a decir a estos líderes judíos que ellos eran los

viñadores que primero apedrearon a sus propios profetas. Y le

dijo a los líderes que ellos eran los viñadores que pronto se

desharían de él, Jesús, y que, al hacerlo, renunciarían a su

papel privilegiado de presentar al Mesías prometido al mundo.

“Y éste”, dice el Evangelio según san Mateo, “es un relato

sobre ustedes, los herederos de lo que fue primeramente ofreci-

do a Israel”. El Reino de Dios fue abierto primero para Israel y

ahora es ofrecido a todo el mundo, pero debe ser recibido como

un regalo. Los primeros cristianos son los nuevos viñadores. La

más profunda realidad del Reino de Dios es que está a disposi-

ción de toda persona sobre la faz de la tierra, incluso a Israel.

This narrative allegorically illustrates the reproaches of the prophets in the story of Israel. It is a history that belongs to us. It is about the Covenant which God wished to establish with mankind and in which he also called us to participate. Like any other love story, this story of the Covenant has its positive moments too, but it is also marked by betrayal and rejection. In order to make us understand how God the Father responds to the rejection of his love and his proposal of an alliance, the Gospel passage puts a question on the lips of the owner of the vineyard: “When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” (v. 40). This question emphasizes that God’s disappointment at the wicked behavior of mankind is not the last word! This is the great novelty of Christianity: a God who, even though disappointed by our mistakes and our sins, does not fail to keep his Word, does not give up and, most of all, does not seek vengeance! My brothers and sisters, God does not avenge himself. God loves, he does not avenge himself. He waits for us to forgive us, to embrace us. Through the “rejected stones” — and Christ is the first stone that the builders rejected — through situations of weakness and sin, God continues to circulate “the new wine” of his vineyard, namely mercy. This is the new wine of the Lord’s vineyard: mercy. There is only one obstacle to the tenacious and tender will of God: our arrogance and our conceit which, at times also becomes violence! Faced with these attitudes where no fruit is produced, the Word of God retains all its power to repri-mand and reproach: “Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it” (v. 43). The urgency of replying with good fruits to the call of the Lord, who asks us to become his vineyard, helps us understand what is new and original about the Christian faith. It is not so much the sum of precepts and moral norms but rather, it is first and foremost a proposal of love which God makes through Jesus and continues to make with mankind. It is an invitation to enter into this love story, by becoming a lively and open vine, rich in fruits and hope for everyone. A closed vineyard can become wild and produce wild grapes. We are called to leave this vineyard to put ourselves at the service of our brothers and sisters who are not with us, in order to shake each other and encourage each other, to remind ourselves that we must be the Lord’s vineyard in every environment, even the more distant and challenging ones.

Esta historia ilustra de manera alegórica los reproches que los profetas habían hecho sobre la historia de Israel. Es una historia que nos pertenece: se habla de la alianza que Dios quiso establecer con la humanidad y a la que también nos llamó a participar. Pero esta historia de alianza, como cada historia de amor, conoce sus momentos positivos, pero está marcada también por traiciones y desprecios. Para hacer entender cómo Dios Padre respon-de a los desprecios opuestos a su amor y a su propuesta de alianza, el pasaje evangélico pone en boca del jefe de la viña una pregunta: «Cuando venga, pues, el dueño de la viña, ¿qué hará con aquellos labradores?» (v. 40). Esta pregunta subraya que la desilusión de Dios por el comportamiento perverso de los hombres no es la última palabra. Está aquí la gran novedad del cristianismo: un Dios que, incluso desilusio-nado por nuestros errores y nuestros pecados, no pierde su palabra, no se detiene y sobre todo ¡no se venga! Hermanos y hermanas, ¡Dios no se venga! Dios ama, no se venga, nos espera para perdo-narnos, para abrazarnos. A través de las «piedras de descarte» —y Cristo es la primera piedra que los constructores han descartado— a través de las situaciones de debilidad y de pecado, Dios continúa poniendo en circulación el «vino nuevo» de su viña, es decir, la misericordia: este es el vino nuevo de la viña del Señor: la misericordia. Hay solo un impe-dimento frente a la voluntad tenaz y tierna de Dios: nuestra arrogancia y nuestra presunción, ¡que se convierte en ocasiones en violencia! Frente a estas actitudes y donde no se producen frutos, la palabra de Dios conserva todo su poder de reproche y advertencia: «se os quitará el reino de Dios para dárselo a un pueblo que rinda sus frutos» (v. 43). La urgencia de responder con frutos de bien a la llamada del Señor, que nos llama a conver-tirnos en su viña, nos ayuda a entender qué hay de nuevo y de original en la fe cristiana. Esta no es tanto la suma de preceptos y de normas morales como, ante todo, una propuesta de amor que Dios, a través de Jesús hizo y continúa haciendo a la humanidad. Es una invitación a entrar en esta historia de amor, convirtiéndose en una viña vivaz y abierta, rica de frutos y de esperanza para todos. Una viña cerrada se puede convertir en salvaje y producir uva salvaje. Estamos llamados a salir de la viña para ponernos al servicio de los hermanos que no están con nosotros, para agitarnos y animarnos, para recordarnos que debemos ser la viña del Señor en cada ambiente, también en los más lejanos y desagradables.

El programa de RICA, Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos, es el proceso por el cual hombres y mujeres no bautizadas entran a ser miembros de la Iglesia Católica. Este proceso incluye diferentes etapas, marcadas por estudio, oración, y ritos en la Misa Dominical. Los participantes en el programa de RICA son conocidos como catecúmenos. Pasarán por un proceso de conversión mientras estudian los Evangelios, profesan su fe en Jesucristo y la Iglesia Católica, y reciben los Sacramentos de Bautismo, Confirmación, y la Santa Eucaristía. El proceso de RICA sigue la practica antigua de la Iglesia y fue redescubierta por el Concilio Vaticano Segundo como la manera normal de preparar adultos para el Bautis-mo. Los tres sacramentos de Iniciación Cristiana: Bautismo, Confirmación, y Eucaristía- nos acercan a nosotros fieles de Cristo, a conocer su grandeza y nos permite llevar acabo la misión de todo el pueblo santo de Dios en la iglesia y en el mundo entero. Si una persona ha sido bautizada en otra tradición cristiana, este proceso de iniciación te prepara para entrar en comunión con la Iglesia Católica celebrando los sacramentos de Confirmación y Eucaristía.

It is not too late ! The RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants in the RCIA are known as catechu-mens. They undergo a process of conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the normal way adults prepare for baptism. The three sacraments of Christian initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist - closely combine to bring us, the faithful of Christ, to his full stature and to enable us to carry out the mission of the entire people of God in the Church and in the world. If a person has been baptized in another Christian tradition, the initiation process prepares you to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church by cele-brating the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist or Holy Communion.

Carolina “Wella” Trevino of McKinney, Texas passed away Friday, September 25, 2020 at the age of 84 after battling cancer in Denison, Texas. She was born on January 29, 1936 to Santiago and Dominga Villarreal in Robstown, Texas, the youngest of four children. Wella mar-ried Pablo Trevino and to this union, seven chil-dren were born. She was a homemaker but most importantly Wella was a mother and grandmother. She had eighteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren: all of them the light of her life. Wella could be found at any time on her front porch on Murray Street where she would wave to anyone passing by her. Wella would also welcome anyone to come for a sit on the porch. Her home was a gathering place for everyone. Wella loved flowers, her snacks, and her life. She most loved visits from family and friends. Wella is survived by her children, Gracie Trevino of Blue Ridge, Texas; Anna Lowing and husband, Steve of Denison, Texas, Leti Trevino and Ralph Nanez of New Braunfels, Texas, Paul Anthony Trevino and wife, Monica of McKinney, Texas, Ray Trevino and wife, Delana of Anna, Texas, and Albert Trevino of McKinney, Texas; and numerous other loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Santiago and Dominga Villarreal; husband, Pablo Trevino; daughter, Rose Cancino; granddaughter, Danielle Colton; and siblings, Santiago Villarreal, Maria Pena and Louisa Guerra.

Carolina "Wella" Trevino de McKinney, Texas falleció el viernes 25 de septiembre de 2020 a la edad de 84 años después de luchar contra el cáncer en Denison, Texas. Nació el 29 de enero de 1936, hija de Santiago y Dominga Villarreal en Robstown, Texas, la más joven de cuatro hijos. Wella se casó con Pablo Trevino y en esta unión nacieron siete hijos. Era ama de casa, pero más importante para ella era que Wella era madre y abuela. Tuvo dieciocho nietos, treinta y cinco bisnietos y dos bisnietos: todos ellos la luz de su vida. Wella se podía encontrar en cualquier momento en su porche en Murray Street, donde saludaba a cualquiera que pasara junto a ella.
