PRAY: May a change in the U.S. Supreme Court move our nation closer to the day when every human being is

protected in law and welcomed in life. Our Father..., Hail Mary..., Glory Be...

FAST: Offer a sacrifice for the intention. LEARN: Pro-life laws can and do reduce the abortion rate. Most people on both sides of the abortion debate agree that reducing the number of abortions is a desirable outcome. While some argue that contraception is the key to reducing the abortion rate, real-world evidence does not back that up. Instead, research shows that even when women were provided with free "emergency contraception" ahead of time, the pregnancy and abortion rate remained statistically equivalent with those who were not provided with it.1 In fact, the availability of contraception and abortion can increase the rate of unintended pregnancies (as well as sexually transmitted infections) as studies show that people engage in more frequent and riskier behavior if they believe their risk has been lowered.2 On the other hand, evidence suggests that laws restricting the funding of abortion (like the Hyde amendment preventing Medicaid funds from going to abortion) or limiting its availability, involving parents, and providing women with more information lower the rate of abortion.3 Unfortunately, Roe, its companion case Doe, and some subsequent rulings have been used to invalidate many laws meant to lower the rate of abortion.

Centennial News - Sunday, September 2, 2018

Anniversary of Fr. Lafleur - On September 7, 1944, Fr. Verbis

Lafleur, a Military Chaplain and priest of the Diocese of Lafayette, died as a Prisoner of War when the transport ship he was aboard was attacked and sunk in the Pacific Ocean. Fr. Lafleur served valiantly during the war, earning the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. Many have marveled at his heroic model of virtue and perseverance in the faith. A Mass is held annually on the anniversary of his death at St. Landry Church in Opelousas. All are invited to attend this year’s Mass at 6:30pm, Friday, September 7th to mark the 74th Anniversary of his death. Centennial Canada Pilgrimage – please pray for the 75 pilgrims who are on pilgrimage with Bishop Deshotel this week exploring our Acadian History and honoring our Diocesan Centennial Year. All Catholics of the Diocese are being remembered and prayed for by the pilgrims and Bishop Deshotel as they visit the homeland of the Acadians and their place of exile which led many to come to what is now the Diocese of Lafayette. It is of interest that the first deportation of Acaidans began on September 5, 1755 which will be the day (September 5, 2018) that the group will return back to the Diocese. In remembering our past, we pray for our present and future knowing that the story of our faith is still being written. Centennial Fest – Honoring our Diocesan Centennial with our young people throughout the Diocese of Lafayette, we will have a Youth Gathering at Parc International Downtown Lafayette on Saturday, October 20th from 3pm to 8pm and will include Music, Guest Speakers, Music, Mass, Food and closing with a Candlelight Eucharistic Adoration with Bishop Deshotel. Our Youth, All Youth Groups, Families, Clergy and Religious are invited. Please mark your calendars now. This will be a great opportunity to see the Life of Our Faith. Admission will be free (food for purchase will be available).
