THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

SUNDAYS AFTER PENTECOST Most of the Sundays between now and the end of the Church Year (celebrated with The Reign of Christ, this year on November 25) are known as the Sundays after Pentecost. They used to be known as Ordinary Sundays. However, our theologians have reminded us that no Sunday is ordinary because of the Resurrection. The Sundays therefore mark the number of weeks since the Holy Spirit was poured on the Church - sending them into mission (recorded in Acts 2:41 when over 3000 people became followers of Jesus). The Church uses a 3 year cycle, Years A, B and C, to ensure we read through the Gospels every three years. This year is Year B and we read from the Gospel of Mark (Year A reads through Matthew and Year C through Luke). On special days (including those leading up to and after Easter and some Saints Days) we read the Gospel of John. As we journey through Mark’s gospel we understand Jesus through Mark’s eyes. This is generally believed to be the first gospel written and contains “the facts” without the embellishment that the other gospels include (check out Mark 16, compared to Luke 24 and Matthew 28). Our liturgical colour, green, is a reminder that we are growing in God’s love and with the Spirit, just like nature grows around us showing the wide variety of ‘greens’ in the landscape. During this long season, various celebrations break into the ‘green’ as we commemorate saints and martyrs. PRAYER OF THE DAY Merciful God, in your Son you call not the righteous but sinners to repentance: draw us away from the easy road that leads to destruction, and guide us into paths that lead to life abundant, that in seeking your truth, and obeying your will, we may know the joy of being a disciple of Jesus our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Job 23: 1–9, 16–17

A reading from the book of Job Job answered his companions: ‘Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. Oh, that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted for ever by my judge. If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him.

God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face!’ Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Commentary: The book of Job is a short story that explores the issue of innocent suffering in relation to the idea of a just and omnipotent God. It moves away from the idea that suffering was retribution from God for sin; and seeks other answers, although not wholly satisfactorily. Today’s passage comes after one friend Eliphaz has suggested that Job is suffering because he must have done something wrong. Job protests his innocence, struggling between faith and despair, and challenges God to justify himself. PSALM 22: 1-15 Response: God brings us to a place of peace. 1. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me: why are you so far from helping me and from the words of my groaning? 2. My God, I cry to you day by day, but you do not answer: and by night also I take no rest. 3. But you continue holy: you that are the praise of Israel……………………..…….. Response

4. In you our forbears trusted: they trusted, and you delivered them; 5. To you they cried and they were saved: they put their trust in you and were not confounded. 6. But as for me, I am a worm and no man: the scorn of all and despised by the people………………. Response

7. Those that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips at me and wag their heads, saying, 8. ‘He trusted in the Lord - let him deliver him: let him deliver him, if he delights in him.’ 9. But you are he that took me out of the womb: that brought me to lie at peace on my mother’s breast……. Response

10. On you have I been cast since my birth: you are my God, even from my mother’s womb. 11. O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand: and there is none to help. 12. Many oxen surround me: fat bulls of Bashan close me in on every side………. Response

13. They gape wide their mouths at me: like lions that roar and rend. 14. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart within my breast is like melting wax. 15. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd: and my tongue clings to my gums.……………….….God brings us to a place of peace. SECOND READING Hebrews 4: 12–16

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Commentary: In this passage the ‘word of God’ is not the Bible, (since that had not yet been put together) but rather the whole of the divine revelation: the Law given through Moses, the teachings of the prophets and the definitive revelation given in the Son. As the embodiment of the Word, Jesus has fulfilled all that the High Priest of the Temple symbolically enacted when, once a year, he ‘passed through’ the outer sanctuary and entered the Holy of Holies. Jesus has passed through the heavens to the very throne of God and made it possible for us to approach that ‘throne’ with confidence. GOSPEL Mark 10: 17–31 Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Alleluia! The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark, chapter 10, beginning at the 17th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.”’ He said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ They were greatly astounded and said to one another, ‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.’ Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you.’ Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age – houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields – but with persecutions – and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Commentary: To be wealthy was a sign of God’s blessing, according to the normal Jewish view of Jesus’ day. (This principle is embodied in the story of Job.) The obverse of this was that the poor were not blessed, although claims were made that there could be other evidence of God’s blessing in their lives, which compensated for their lack of wealth and privilege. Jesus strongly endorses this view, going so far as to say elsewhere ‘blessed are the poor’. The man who had many possessions was challenged to commit himself fully to discipleship in the Kingdom of God no matter what the cost might be. Sentence There is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for Jesus’ sake, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

Julie’s Jottings A few people have asked me why we need another three sessions of Mission Planning? The first of our sessions had a focus on the stage we have reached in our understanding of Mission and Church Growth. From these sessions, we have now identified some key themes which we want to explore further as we seek to make some definite plans for the future:

• How and when to invite people;

• How we can journey with people;

• How we can make worship appealing. The next session which will be at St Andrew’s next Sunday, 21 October and at Mary MacKillop on 4 November, will give us the chance to think through our own faith journey and to think of different ways we can invite other people to connect with our Church Family. With the best intentions in the world, we often invite people to events that don’t really connect with them. This session will give us some time to explore, using our own stories, how and when we can invite others.

An aside…. please remember to keep updating the lists in the hall at St Andrew’s and at Mary MacKillop and St Thomas’ with the types of events you feel your friends and family might like to attend in 2019.

The second session (St Andrew’s on 28 October; Mary MacKillop on 11 November) is a focus on our faith journey and how we have explored and continue to explore and deepen our own faith. This leads us into thinking about the kinds of ‘systems’ and ministries that our parish can or could have in the future to help others explore and deepen their own faith. We will consider the kinds of functions that helped us deepen our faith, especially when we were new to church (or what might have helped us) and how some of these functions - like a companion or a small group - can be offered to those who want to know more about Spirituality, especially Christian Spirituality.

The final session (St Andrew’s on 4 November; Mary MacKillop on 18 November) will be a little more challenging for us as clergy, but it will be a chance for you to offer feedback about what you like, and don’t like, in worship! Worship is for all of us and is often referred to as the ’work of the people’ even though much of our Anglican way of doing things can appear to be “Priest Centred”. So our final session will step us through the worship that we currently have and get us thinking about what might be essentially Anglican, what might be a tradition here that we like but don’t understand, and then what might be helpful to the new person who walks off the street into church worship. I suggest it might be challenging because some of the questions in the session focus on the length of sermons and the tone of voice used in the service - which can be a little scary for those of us who do have to do this on a regular basis… but there are also some questions around how we could offer welcome, hospitality, music, and so much more in our worship.

I am sure that just like the last sessions, these next three sessions will be informative and interesting and that, while they will test our brain power early on Sunday mornings, they will be fruitful discussions for our parish future. I encourage everyone to come along and have their say!

PRIESTLY ORDINATION OF TIMOTHY NICHOLSON: Last Sunday it was a great delight to be able to announce that Timothy will be ordained Priest at St John’s Cathedral on Saturday 1 December at 10am. We anticipate a lot of parishioners will want to attend Timothy’s Ordination and we will be arranging a bus for those who would like to attend. More details will be available in coming weeks. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Timothy, please include your gift in a marked envelope and place it in the offertory plate over the coming weeks. Following ordination, Timothy will continue as Assistant Priest in our Parish. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Parish. Parish Council and I believe there are some good opportunities for Timothy to help us further our mission and ministry. We know that this will continue to stretch us financially but we see wonderful opportunities for the future. Timothy’s first Eucharist as Priest will be on Sunday 2 December and further details will be available in coming weeks. We will have a Parish celebration on that Sunday, with brunch or lunch at St Andrew’s. Timothy will then preside for the first time at St Thomas’ on Wednesday 5 December and then at Mary MacKillop on Sunday 9 December. Please pray for Timothy and June and their wider family. It is a true delight to be able to continue to journey with them. I ask you to pray for our parish as we take this next step and continue to stretch out in faith.

I ask you to continue to pray for our Ordination Student in Formation, Aaron Coates, as he awaits the news of a potential full time appointment in a parish commencing later this year, with the hope of ordination to the Diaconate in mid 2019.

Charity of the Month—October Angel Flight

Angel Flight is a charity that coordinates non-emergency flights to help country people trying to deal with the triple trouble of bad health, poor finances and daunting distance. All flights are free and may involve patients travelling to medical facilities anywhere in Australia. Angel Flight pilots do not carry aeromedical staff or medical equipment so do not act as an alternative to the Royal Flying Doctor Service or Air Ambulance in that capacity. With its current resources Angel Flight can coordinate up to twenty flights per day together with complementary ground transport from and to airports. They also transport blood, blood products and medical drugs.

Established in April 2003, Angel Flight Australia is the initiative of Bill Bristow AM, an experienced businessman and pilot, and proud winner of the 2005 Queensland Australian of the Year Award.

Flights are conducted by volunteer pilots in their own aircraft. Angel Volunteer pilots come from all walks of life and donate their time, their skills and most of their aircraft costs for each flight. However donations are needed to cover the following:

• Fuel used in the conduct of Angel Flight missions

• Discounted commercial flights when poor weather prevents light aircraft from flying

• The Angel Flight Support Centre that runs on a very small infrastructure, with four mission coordinators and three administrators as full time paid staff.

For more info on Angel Flight, see https://www.angelflight.org.au

Parish Polo Shirts now available! $22 each.

Please put money in an envelope with your size (S-7XL men’s, 6-26 women’s) in the collection plate or hand in to the office. The Office has a sizing chart if that helps

you find your right size.

John flew home to Emerald following treatment in Rockhampton. Given his complicated medical condition an Angel Flight made things a little easier than a long road trip which had been proving disruptive too his dialysis schedule.
