“Love is the beauty
of the soul.”
—Saint Augustine
TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
J ESUS and his disciples left from there and began
a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish any-
one to know about it. He was teaching his disci-
ples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed
over to men and they will kill him, and three days after
his death the Son of Man will rise.” But they did not un-
derstand the saying, and they were afraid to question
him.
They came to Capernaum and, once inside the
house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing
about on the way?” But they remained silent. They had
been discussing among themselves on the way who was
the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and
said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the
last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he
placed it in the their midst, and putting his arms around
it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as
this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me,
receives not me but the One who sent me.”

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice
St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by JoAnn and
Chuck Baird, will resume its first Monday of the month
meetings on Monday, September 7, at 7:00 pm in the
chapel.
On Centering Prayer
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653,
says:
The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Chris-
tian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus
Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scrip-
tures…Let them remember, however, that prayer should
accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dia-
logue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to
him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the
divine oracles.’
Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the
Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to increase the
time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a
day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one
another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in
the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst
with ours.”
All members of the Centering Prayer group invite you to
join them in the joy of this spiritual discipline.

from the church parking lot and around to the
side of the building facing the school).

loved one to other life-changing events.

deacon’s corner Conversations at Table
A PARADOX OF OUR OWN MAKING TO BE PERFECTLY RULED AND PERFECTLY FREE
Deacon Chuck Lanham
T HE QUESTION, and concomitant debate and controversy, of whether God exists or as Richard Dawkins and oth-
ers so adamantly assert is merely a delusion, is unlikely to be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction anytime in the
near or far distant future. As someone who resides firmly on the side of God, I must admit to holding certain views
that may and often do conflict with those who sit on the opposite side of the proverbial fence. While I quite often may stri-
dently disagree with my worthy opponents on this matter, I hold no animus toward anyone who may happen to disagree
with me and I hope and trust that the feeling may be mutual.
Since the very beginning it has been obvious that human beings have an insatiable appetite for doing whatever they
want, when they want, how they want, and unfortunately, more often than not let the consequences fall where they may.
There is a certain argument to be made that “What we want, Heaven help us, is simultaneously to be perfectly ruled and per-
fectly free, that is, at the same time to discover the right and the good and to create it.” What ought to be apparent from this
is that these two contradictory impulses together form a paradox that goes beyond “some high abstract level of arcane
angst.” This paradox presents us with a conundrum of the highest order: where to locate an unjudged judge, an unruled leg-
islator, a premise maker who rests on no premises, an uncreated creator of values.
Arthur Allen Leff argues:
“There is then, this one longstanding, widely accepted ethical and legal system that is based upon the edicts of an unchallengeable creator of the right and the good, in which the only job of the person who
would do right is to find what the evaluator said. Assuming that I know what the command ‘Thou shalt not
commit adultery’ means, then if (and only if) the speaker is God, I ought not commit adultery. I ought not because He said I ought not, and why He said that is none of my business. And it is none of my business
because it is a premise of His system that what He says I ought not to do, I ought not to do.
It is of the utmost importance to see why a God-grounded system has no analogues. Either God exists or
He does not, but if He does not, nothing and no one else can take His place. Anything that took His place
would also be Him…We are defined, constituted, as beings whose adultery is wrong, bad, unlawful. Thus committing adultery in such a system is ‘naturally’ bad only because the system is supernaturally consti-
tuted.”
There is much more to Leff’s argument but what has been presented here ought to be sufficient for us to begin to
realize that the aforementioned paradox can and does exist only when the supernatural laws of God are ignored or supplant-
ed by the laws instituted by man. Certainly something to ponder and consider, don’t you think?
1. Here I will leave the how, what, and when of the beginning to one’s own interpretation, although I personally am partial to Genesis, Chapters 1 & 2.

CHWC—Catholic Heart Work Camp
Saint Albert the Great is seeking one man and one woman at
least 21 years old who would be willing to chaperone the
CHWC 2016.
A qualified chaperone will need to have or be willing to have
a full background check and attend Protecting God’s Chil-
dren.
The 2016 Catholic Heart Work Camp for Reno will take
place Sunday July 3 to Saturday July 9, 2016. (This includes
the 4th of July that Monday).
What is CHWC: a detailed explanation can be found at
http://heartworkcamp.com/dates/reno-nv/, but in summary,
CHWC is a social outreach event that serves the neglected
and in need and offers the participant an opportunity to live
as Disciples of Christ through serving others. As a Chaper-
one, you will go out into the city of Reno and oversee youth
as they serve the poor in a variety of settings and needs. In
the evening you will stay overnight at Bishop Manogue High
School. (Yes: eat, sleep and shower there too) for one week.
If you are interested, I encourage you to check out the
CHWC website; and then contact Ted Krembs at the parish
office – 775-747-0722 ext 5606. St Albert has successfully
participated in this offering for two years now and those who
have gone on this journey have many wonderful things to
say about it.
Books can be purchased
from Deacon Chuck.
