Page 3 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time - October 11, 2020

A Refl ec on from Fr. JamesThere has been so much talk about the uniqueness and importance of the Presiden al Elec on this year. What caught my a en on is the projec on about the impact of religious affi lia on in the outcome of the elec on. The Catholic Church in par cular has received more a en on than any other religious group in recent mes. Religious iden ty has always been the bedrock and a key factor that determines the core values and direc on of any society and culture. Thus, a society either leans toward religious and moral values or is secularized and embraces moral rela vism. Looking around the world, we see how the dynamic of religion versus secularism is playing out in diff erent socie es.

A recent study conducted by Gallup shows that the percentage of Americans who reported belonging to a church, synagogue or mosque or any religion is at an all- me low. The study further indicated that church a endance has dropped more among Catholics than among Protestants. It is no longer news that the largest “denomina on” in the United States today are the “NONE,” that is, those who do not affi liate with any religious denomina on at all.

Our scripture readings today focus on the theme of God’s invita on to all people to the banquet of the lamb, free of charge. We are told how the fi rst people who were invited did not only reject the invita on but maltreated and killed the prophets. Comparing the parable to our own me, we need to ask ourselves, “how are we diff erent from the people Jesus described in the Gospel today?” Listening to the news, we hear of an increasing rate of Church vandaliza on and religious intolerance. We have more and more family members, friends and neighbors leaving the faith and embracing secularized ideologies. This calls for more prayers for our na on, especially at this me of the elec on.

Each me we come to Mass we are honoring the invita on by God to par cipate in the banquet of the Lamb, the Eucharist. Everyone is invited to this banquet. Let us pray, this weekend in par cular, and refl ect on how God is calling each one of us to help extend his invita on to our family, friends and those who have stopped prac cing their faith. May God use us as his instrument to reach out to them in love and bring them back to the faith.

Thank you and remain blessed,

Fr. James

Book Review by David ReesAre you looking to grow in virtue and holiness? Ever wonder what being a true “man of God” is all about? Well look no further, “Man Enough: Lessons from St. Joseph on Becoming a Godly Man” by Dom Quaglia Jr. is the book for you!

This brief, 126-page book is a powerful refl ec on on the life and example of St. Joseph and the many ways that he challenges us to live as holier men and disciples of Jesus Christ. I highly recommend it!

Liturgy Of the Word With ChildrenIn today’s Gospel reading, we hear a parable Jesus used to teach about what God wants for us. Everyone was invited to the party, but not everyone came. Being invited is not enough, you must show up. God wants us to listen to Him and love. God wants us to be close to Him. He is always there, His invita on is always there, but we have to show up and spend me with God.

(By Abbey Lammers, St. Benedict Catechist)

St. Teresa of Jesus*(1515-1582)October 15St. Teresa of Jesus (also called St. Teresa of Ávila) was a Spanish noblewoman who felt called to convent life in the Catholic Church. A Carmelite nun, religious reformer, author, theologian of the contempla ve life and of mental prayer, she earned the rare dis nc on of being declared a Doctor of the Church, but not un l over four centuries a er her death. Ac ve during the Catholic Reforma on, she reformed the Carmelite Orders of both women and men. The movement she ini ated was later joined by the younger Spanish Carmelite friar and mys c John of the Cross. It led eventually to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites. Her wri en contribu ons, which include her autobiography, The Life of Teresa of Jesus and her seminal work The Interior Castle, are today an integral part of Spanish Renaissance literature. Together with The Way of Perfec on, her works form part of the literary canon of Chris an mys cism and Chris an medita on prac ce, and con nue to a ract interest from people both within and outside the Catholic Church. She con nues to be widely noted as an inspira on to philosophers, theologians, historians, neurologists, fi c on writers and ar sts, as well as many others. Forty years a er her death, in 1622, Teresa was canonized by Pope Gregory XV. ~ Source: www.catholic.org

A Note From The Principal Dear Parishioners,

As the patron saint of the environment and animals, St. Francis of Assisi’s devo on to God was expressed through his love for all of God’s crea on. Our 4th-grade students paid tribute to St. Francis with “All Creatures Big and Small” during Mass last Friday in honor of his feast day, and Fr. Wilfred provided the virtual Blessing of the Pets to the en re school community. Deacon Ed delighted our preschool children with a special blessing of their pet posters in front of our campus statue of St. Francis. What a las ng impression this will make on youngest students.

Last Spring our 3rd-grade students were not able to receive their First Communion and Confi rma on due to COVID-19 and the ensuing school closure. We are excited to fi nally celebrate this sacrament with our students on Saturday, October 17. They are very well-prepared and looking forward to this sacred event.

Blessings for a beau ful fall weekend!

Anita Pe , Principal
