N OVEMBER is here so it’s time to wrap up warm and enjoy the highlights of the season.

Starting with a bang, Bonfire Night is a favourite for small children and big kids alike. Then Christmas Fairs and

Christmas Lights evenings towards the end of the month mean we can be in no doubt that the year is coming to a close.

Teddington Lights Up joined by the Christmas Lantern Procession on the 26th will be a real treat as the streets throng with locals. There will be no shortage of opportunities to bag the perfect prezzie as a plethora of fairs and bazaars sprout at every opportunity throughout the month.

I will be bringing you the results of the TW11 Awards next month, this month we just didn’t have the space to do it justice.

Christmas Lantern Procession

Teddington Business Community’s CHRISTMAS LANTERN PROCESSION Lights Up Night Thursday 26th November from 4.30 – 5.30pm

THIS WILL BE THE THIRD YEAR of our popular Christmas Lantern Lit

Procession in and around Broad Street and the first year we are joining in with the ‘Christmas Lights Up’ evening on Thursday 26th November which starts afterwards.

The procession led by Santa and his sleigh will start in the Causeway at 4.30pm, proceed up and down Broad Street and end in Church Road outside the Baptist Church at approximately 5pm, ready for Christmas candle lit carols led by Revd Littledale. These roads will be traffic free for this event.

This year there are many more children’s groups, younger children and adults, creating fabulous lanterns in workshops at Happy Potter and Elleray Hall, which they will then parade in the procession.

The lantern makers and bearers include local groups of Brownies from Teddington, Twickenham, and Fulwell, children from St Mary’s and St Peter’s and Sacred Heart schools, Teddington Rugby club ‘minis’ group and younger children led by ‘Elsa’ from Disney’s Frozen.

Stepping on Out carry the huge lantern lit Christmas Tree and Park Lane Stables with their

elves and pony carry two huge lantern stars, quite a spectacle!

A new addition to the procession which certainly had appeal last year were the six hardy Teddington Rugby player ‘reindeers’ pulling Santa on his Rotary sleigh.

Children please note that Santa will be in his Grotto at Happy Potter, Broad Street on the night until 4.30pm and return after the parade at 5.30pm. Also on this night the Christmas Advent Doors campaign throughout the town centre, sponsored by the TBC and Teddington Baptist Church, will be launched too.

If you would like to make and parade a lantern in the procession please contact Annie Moore on 07941264621 or email [email protected].

“A village school in the heart of West London” (OFSTED 2010) Come and look around our school to discover what makes

Sacred Heart feel different

IT WAS MONDAY AND the heavens opened at the annual Interior Design professionals show

‘Decorex’ held at Syon Park.

Inside the exhibition the ‘Blue’ mood remained. This season blue has completely taken over the Interiors world. The little Green Paint Company

has brought out a new colour chart named strangely enough ‘Blue’ which promotes all the blues that are currently in vogue. Ultra Blue being an incredibly bold cobalt blue for a contemporary Mediterranean look, but also every shade

from a soft, only just blue named Celestial White which would be lovely in a bedroom. Through to a traditional and pretty Bone China Blue which would be stunning in a traditional kitchen and also a darker daring Hicks Blue which would create an atmospheric dining room or entrance hall.

In-keeping with the theme were a large number of Portuguese furniture designers at the show. Historically famous for their tiles, Portuguese contemporary furniture makers are now using stunning contemporary tiles in interesting ways

to make crazy furniture pieces. This sideboard is made to order and each piece is unique.

If you fancy making a statement in a hallway or perhaps papering a fun small space like a

cloakroom so that it is ‘the height of fashion’ take a look at the New Geometric II collection that has just been launched by Cole and Son. It has some brilliant funky papers that also come in other colours, not just Blue and work with both traditional and contemporary pieces.

The interior rooms on show still have a fun eclectic mix of traditional furniture pieces alongside quirky pendant lighting and accessories in stylish metal and glass finishes. This grown up room is given a sharp and individual look by

adding cutting edge artwork, all with a distinctly blue tone.

Even the stone suppliers are promoting incredibly exotic slabs which create truly fabulous interiors, feature walls and furniture.

and guess what colour Interior Designer to the stars ‘Nicky Haslams’ stand was?

TEDDINGTON BAPTIST CHURCH are celebrating their 10th year of holding their annual,

popular craft fair. The event to be held on 21st November, 11am-3pm, provides an enjoyable family day out with high quality, beautifully displayed products all at reasonable prices.

To mark the occasion Mayor of Richmond, Cllr Martin Seymour, is opening proceedings at 11am. Live music will be provided by the Ukeaholics, a Surrey ukulele band followed by a 2pm concert by local children’s choir from St Mary’s & St Peter’s primary school. A large and unique collection of nativity sets from around the world form a beautiful and intriguing exhibition and, for those with a sweet tooth, choose from one of the specially commissioned fancy ‘10’ cup cakes!

Children are always delighted with their regular guests from Mill Cottage Farm Experience. Their fluffy alpacas and squealing pigs, sheep, turkeys and ducks create quite a stir, not least when the alpacas go for a walk down to the shops to drum

up extra publicity! There will also be face-painting and an activity room just for little ones.

Shoppers will appreciate the range of professional designer/makers offering jewellery, textiles, beauty products, perfumes, stationery, ceramics and handicrafts. Books, homemade jams, chutneys and cakes are also available. A professional manicurist and massage lady add some pre-Christmas pampering. There will also be a friendly cafe and plenty to entertain children.

Entry is free. The event is run by a team of around 50 volunteers of all ages from the church.

THE RECENT VILLAGE plan meeting held at The Landmark Arts Centre on 12th October was

extremely well attended with over 170 residents coming out to have their voices heard.

At the meeting held by The Council and The Teddington Society, attendees were asked to give their views on topics such as transport, public services, the look and feel of the area, green spaces, our people and shopping and local businesses.

The Council state that ‘The findings of such consultations will contribute towards the Council identifying the character of the area and be used to improve village areas through planning decisions.’ As well as ‘look at how stakeholders – especially residents, the Council and other agencies – can use resources to improve the Village and its facilities.’ The meeting showed

that the residents of Teddington are very keen to have input into those decisions.

World of Wine

I AM DEVOTING THIS MONTH to the heavenly world of Wine and Cheese matching. A subject very

close to my heart as I am fascinated by food pairing generally and love cheese. In February and October this year, I ran a series of cheese matching courses that explored the world of cow, goat and ewe’s milk cheeses with the aim of pairing specific wines with specific cheeses. It was a fascinating experience and at this point in time there are very few cheeses in the wonderful Teddington Cheese shop that I have yet to savour.

For many, eating cheese with wine is a simple operation. I must admit to having become slightly obsessed with the quest for the perfect match and have become decidedly pompous about the correct cheese knife and have entered the perilous world of cheese cutting etiquette.

THE PERFECT MATCHSweet wine and Blue cheese was an easy winner. This can be counter intuitive for some but the partnering of salty blue cheese and an unctuous dessert wine is a sublime taste experience. Chateau Laville 2011 Sauternes paired with a strong Roquefort was staggeringly good and a great example of the flavour of both wine and cheese combining to create an integrated taste sensation.

Runner up for me was Goats milk cheese and Sauvignon blanc. This is slightly generic, but on a regular basis we found that the crisp acidity of this grape married harmoniously with the dense texture of many a goaty cheese. A Sancerre 2014 Chene du Roy paired with an Innes Brick unpasteurised goat cheese from Staffordshire eminently demonstrated this matching.

Ewe’s Milk – Surprisingly varied and delicious. It will come as no surprise that ewe’s and goat’s milk are produced in much smaller quantities given the greater number of cows in the world. One of the many revelations of the cheese course was the quality and diversity of sheep’s milk cheese ranging from soft, light fresh styles such

as Wigmore from Berkshire; amazing washed rind cheeses such as Ubel Fiuritu from Corsica through to rich blues like Crozier from County Tipperary and tangy hard examples such as Spanish Manchego. Prices are inevitably higher but well worth it.

CHEESE PAIRING DISASTERSMost wines went with most cheeses most of the time so long as we didn’t venture near any extremes of flavour. We did discover some unusual cheeses that divided opinion to put it mildly. At the most extreme, we uncovered a Scottish cheese called Gruth Dhu. This is a seemingly innocuous soft white cheese covered in oats and peppercorns. On its own the cheese is very light and delicate but as soon as you crunch into the coating then a taste catastrophe ensued. All you could taste was pepper and we tried whiskey and big reds to try and assuage the taste to no avail. On a tastier but tricky note was a cheese called Ol Sciur. A blue cheese from Lombardy in Italy wrapped in dried rose petal and red fruits. A curious mix that eventually seemed to work with a very dry sherry.

Is there a catch all wine to go with any cheese? My preferred answer is no but I am also pragmatic and endeavour to be helpful. More often than not, Pinot Noir was the grape that seemed to work with many different styles of cheese. The combination of flavour and moderate tannins harmonised with an array of styles and also makes it a little easier if you are thinking of just one red to go through your main course and into the cheese board.

Wine and Cheese: simple and yet so complicated

flights, reducing from 2,300 feet to 2,000 feet.

The all-party and community campaign against a third runway at Heathrow goes on and Teddington is well represented by the Teddington Action Group, which has been extremely active.

RESULTS OF CENTRAL TEDDINGTON PARKING CONSULTATION

WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY reported that the council has recently been conducting a

consultation on parking controls in central Teddington following some survey work looking at parking densities.

We have now been given the results of this consultation and told that although there are many roads where the majority of respondents would like to see parking controls, few reached the threshold set by the current administration of 50% of households responding being in favour, so no changes are proposed. This will be bitterly disappointing news for those residents in roads with majority support and where residents have been pressing for action to improve parking for some time.

The roads currently outside the controlled zone where the majority of respondents wanted controls were: Alice Mews, Arlington Road, Blenheim Place, Cambridge Road, Church Lane, Church Road, Claremont Road, Coleshill Road, Latimer Road, Linden Grove, Luther Road, Middle Lane, Park Lane, Sandy Lane, St Mary’s Avenue, Teddington Park, Teddington Park Road, Udney Park Road, and Walpole Crescent.

Your local councillors are seeking a meeting with officers and the cabinet member to see if any flexibility might be applied to these thresholds in order to make some progress.

NEW REPORT ON FLIGHTS OVER TEDDINGTON PUBLISHED

A NEW INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS has been published by Heathrow of flights overflying

Teddington and Twickenham since 2011 when the airport is operating on easterly departures.

This report was triggered by the enormous surge in complaints from local residents during the so-called airspace trails last year.

You can see the 73 page report online here: www.heathrow.com/noise/making-heathrow-quieter/our-noise-strategy/working-with-local-communities/community-noise-forum/teddington-and-twickenham-flight-analysis#

The report shows that the trials last year resulted in a significant increase in flights taking-off over Teddington using the so-called ‘Southampton’ route, as many flights on the neighbouring ‘Midhurst’ route that should have taken them over Hampton strayed further east over Teddington. This appears to have returned to normal when the trial finished.

The report also points to a big increase in flights using the so-called ‘Dover’ take-off route over Twickenham and Ham due to the rise in popularity of destinations in the Far East such as Dubai. It also points to an increase in the number of large ‘heavy’ aircraft using this route, with for example, A380s up from four per day in 2011 to between 11 and 14 per day in 2015.Generally the report finds an unexplained trend

since 2011 towards planes flying lower over Teddington, with the average height reducing from 3,400 feet to 3,200 feet, and the lowest
